Sitixplasters. Tlie amount of these in circulation i becoming oaily less. There appears to be suing on a gradual dimimiiianj ami betrin to entertain something a lmpe, that this community has already suffered the heavier, part of the loss, the burthen of which must at some time or other have been laid on its shoulders. Wc would nut, however, be too sanguine in our inkling of a hope. What has been, may be again; and much depends on the manner iu which the ease of the self-constituted bankers, now under arrest, shall he disposed of.

We would not prejudge their eases, nolwith-standing the attempt by one for himself, and by the paitncr uf the either, to cajole the public with their manifestoes, and secure a favorable hold on the opinion of the community; but we must say, that, these easts present one of the best of possible opportunities to the ministers of justice, to shew their disposition to protect the interests of the people. If those men are guilty under the law, then let no ingenuity of counsel, nor any considerations of a false, because partial humanity, screen them from the penalty due to its violation; and if the law be found so defective, that they cannot be held puilty under its provisions, let them ro free, in God's name; but let the defect in the law, if it exist, beclear-lv set forth, indisputably proved, and establish ed beyond question; that the people may insist on protection from their legislative servants, by a law without meshes to catch some offenders, and loop-holes of escape for others. On this point there is a very general desire to be satisfied. Some people openly declare, that any individual has an indisputable right to issue a currency in the shape of promises to pay money, so long as the people see fit to accept it; and that there is no statutory or constitutional power to prevent him. And this opinion i not held alone by men that would ordinarily be consider ed ignorant; but on the contrary, by men held in high esteem for their intelligence.

On the other hand, many believe the power to issue a currency to he an attribute of sovereignty, possessed by individuals only in their collective capacity as a State or nation; and among these, there is a strong' and pervading anxiety to test the validity of the laws of this State, touching this mat ter. Their eyes are now turned with much solicitude towards our judicial tribunals, whose decision is to tail them whether, in respect to a currency, they are under ths protection of the law, or at the mercy of individuals, who may rank as knaves or honest men, just as principles and circumstances may chance to place them in ore or the other category. Ou the decision of this question hangs the important, but still minor consideration, of the conduct of those unauthorized parties, whose issues are yet in circulation. Should the laws be found inefficient and inadequate to the punishment of those now within its danger, what security has the public against future fraud? For their past and present indiscretion, in their acceptance and continued use of a spurious currency, they will in all probability have to pay the penalty ol an additional loss; which the proved and establish-el validity and efficiency of the present laws, might possibly prevent, at least it would ensure the punishment of the guilty, if caught. Out of this shinp'aster misfortune one good, we think, must arise, be the political complexion of our next legislature what it may, the question of a right, on the part of individuals, to issue a currency, must be decided by that body for as it now stands, the is in a condition of positive anarchy.

It is a fundamental question one that concerns every man, woman and child in the State one that ought never to have been made a political party question. It is purely a of political economy; and he who refuses to use such influence as may attach to his position, for the purpose of taking it out of the destructive vortex of party politic, proves that he does not wish it settled, but rather that lie desires it to remain a vexed question, fertile of political capital. It ought to he settled one way or the ether. Si'iNPLASTX IIS AND MORALITY. "Speaking of said a speculative friend of ours yesterday, "the evil of them is not confined to the injury done to the public pocket, neither to that indicted on the public morals.

The social molality of the private circle has suffered from it. Time was," said he, "when a gentleman dared not mention a plaster of any hind in a mixed company, much lest a iplastcr, the disuniting expression would not bo tolerated for a moment; but now the ladies all over town, of every grade and all ages, talk about shin-plasters ithout reserve, and as glibly as about the siliis and satin? in the dry good stores. Thus too is our language perverted, words being turned from their original uses, and made to cxpn-s ideas not belonging to them; and thus might any prohibited words and phrases, connected with i'limoral or indecent hlca, be familiarized to the car of the moral, the delicate and the pure."
