Gunderson, former U.S. Civil Service commissioner, never was really in the race, in spite of eleventh-hour appeals that accused Thorsness of being a one-image candidate and Schock of carrying the traditional businessman image of a South Dakota Republican. McGovern is returning to South Dakota voters just two years after his state rejected his presidential bid. STRONG LUNGS The Burgundy snail of France hums a high, reedy melody while munching grass blades in the spring. Though it only has one lung, this snail is a powerful breather; it can make a candle flame flicker.

Although he has in the past been critical of McGovern's stand on the Vietnam war, Thorsness said he hopes that issue will not be a major part of the fall campaign. "The war is over," he said. "I hope we've learned our lesson. I hope we don't have to refight that war in this campaign." Schock, considered the front-runner until Thorsness entered the race, appeared at a Thorsness victory celebration Tuesday night in Sioux Falls. "I come here to congratulate Leo Thorness.

He's a fine man and I know he will do everything he can to beat Sen. George McGovern," Schock said. Schock then thanked his "If there ever was a time for a person who was not a politician, this was it," Thorsness said Tuesday night. "I think the people were looking for new, fresh faces, not ones associated with old politics." Thorsness swept through the primary with 55 per cent of the vote, Schock was a distant second, while Mrs. Gunderson trailed far behind.

With 1,408 of the state's 1,437 precincts reported, unofficial returns showed Thorsness with 48,373 votes, Schock with 34,661 and Mrs. Gunderson with 9,600. Thorsness, who ignored Republican primary opponents and concentrated on McGovern, said the Democratic senator has lost touch with the thinking of South Dakota ns. PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Leo Thorsness, a former prisoner of war who says "the timing happened to be right," has defeated two candidates for the Republican nomination for U.S.

Senate and will face antiwar Sen. George McGovern in November. McGovern was unopposed in Tuesday's primary for the Democratic party's nomination in his bid for a third term. Thorsness, 42, from Sioux Falls, came out of a pack of first-time Republican candidates to win handily his party's nomination in the state's primary election. He showed solid support from Republicans across the state in rural and urban localities.

A retired Air Force colonel, kota last year, Thorsness said he was going after McGovern. "The timing happened to be right," Thorsness said after his victory over Al Schock, 53-year-old Sioux Falls businessman and Barbara Bates Gunderson, 56, of Rapid City. Legislators Main Victors PIERRE, S.D. (AP) South Dakota voters favored incumbents in selecting candidates for the state legislature in Tuesday's primary election. Unofficial returns from legislative primaries showed only Rep.

James Rothstein of Mobridge, former House majority leader, losing a legislative bid. Rothstein, who served 10 years in the House, was defeated by Leroy Hoffman of Eureka in his attempt to fill the Senate seat vacated by A.W. Spiry of Mobridge. Hoffman received 2,912 votes to 2,101 for Rothstein in District 20, which includes Chambel, McPherson, Edmunds and Walworth counties. The other 26 incumbents involved in primary contests won party support for their bids to return to Pierre in January.

Among them were Republican Senate Minority Leader E.C. Pieplow of Aberdeen, and Rep. Bert Ellington of Sisseton, Democratic assistant House majority leader. Pieplow led four Republican Senate candidates in Brown County with 2,714 votes and El-lingson topped the three House candidates in District 20 including Marshall, Robert and Day counties with 1,775 votes. Kneip issued a statement from Seattle, where he and his wife, Nancy, are attending the national governors' conference.

He invited Dougherty to join with him "in carrying the record of South Dakota's Democrats in next fall's general election." He said, "Our record has been built on a sincere dedication to those ideals and my opponent, Bill Dougherty, has played an important role in that record." Dougherty said in a statement that he had sent a telegram to Kneip congratulating him on his victory. "For myself," he said, "I hate to lose, but as Adlai Stevenson said in 1956, I'm too old to cry and it hurts too much to laugh." Dougherty, who was elected lieutenant governor with Kneip in 1970 and 1972, gave no hint about his future. "I plan to take my family for a few weeks rest and reflection." Kneip said of his victory: "Nancy and I are very pleased and deeply grateful that the Democrats of South Dakota have given me this overwhelming demonstration of their confidence." The third-term question came up after a constitutional amendment was approved providing for four-year terms. Kneip successfully appealed a law to the Supreme Court that prohibited a candidate from seeking a third nomination from his party for governor. Pressler Wins His First Race, Will Face Denholm ty to a third term in Tuesday's primary and will seek re-election on Nov.

5 against Republican John Olson, who also won nomination by a wide margin. Kneip, 41, a former Salem businessman, won all 67 counties in taking a 2-1 majority over Lt. Gov. William Dougherty, who had campaigned against his former running mate trying for the unprecedented third term. Olson, 56, who served as director of the state Highway Department from 1963-69 under former Gov.

Nils Boe, garnered an impressive 55 per cent of the vote in his bid for the GOP governor nomination over two candidates. Unofficial tabulations from 1,407 of the state's 1,437 precincts showed Kneip with 44,701 votes and Dougherty with 23,097. Returns from 1,408 precincts gave Olson 46,228 votes compared with 24,460 for former State Municipal League Director Ron Williamson and 14,023 votes for Oscar Hagen, an Orient farmer. presidency and in government in general made him seek the nomination. Late in his campaign Pressler said he had no idea what his chances of winning might be, but he also said he didn't think a primary loss would hurt him in future races.

Those moments of possible self-doubt are behind the candidate, and he will oppose incumbent Democratic Rep. Frank Denholm in November's general election. Denholm won a House term in 1970 in the district that includes the 21 counties in the eastern third of South Dakota. PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Larry Pressler, who said he wanted to restore public confidence in government, swept past two other Republican candidates Tuesday to win nomination for 1st District Congress.

The Humboldt native, 32, made a last-minute entry into the campaign swirl of South Dakota politics, announcing for the 1st District nomination and filing petitions on the final day. Pressler turned back the election hopes of Cornells Van Helden, 54, Colton, and lone Larsen, 53, Alcester. Because all three candidates were political novices, Republican officials had indicated they expected a close race. But Pressler, a former Rhodes scholar and graduate of Harvard Law School, took the lead on the first returns and never trailed, taking slightly more than half of the votes in the three-way battle. With all but five of the district's 622 precincts reporting, Pressler had 23,655 votes compared with 14,088 for Mrs.

Larsen and 8,354 for Van Helden. Pressler said faltering confidence in the 3-Day i i ACE i HARDWARE arden TAKE Ace" ANVIL PRUIIER i Sat.
