REPORT ASKS FOR $15,000 TO CONTINUE RESEARCHES Tests Made on Patients in Peoria Insane Asylum Three Hundred Known Victims of the Scourge Now in the State.

Special Dispatch to The Jmer Octan. SPRINGFIELD, 1IL, Jan. 23. Indian muize, corn, the Variety that Illinois grows ttnd la feeding to tbc world, la In no manner responsible for pellagra, that mysterious disease which haa been perplexing medical men of many countries for years. This fact has been demonstrated almost beyond a doubt by the Illinois Pellagra commission, which has )ust made Its first report and whit will 'ask the present Legislature for 15.000 with which to prosecute Its researches during the coming two years.

Illinois is the frst state in the union to recognize the disease officially and to make official investigation of its origin. The experiments have extended over a period of one year and have been largely negative, but have succeeded in eliminating practically all af the suggested causes for the disease. Cora Blame. Concerning the corn theory the commls Bloc's report says: "The chief bone of contention all of the time has been as to the role played by the use of corn in its production. In the assumption that the corn diet in duced the disease, the Italian government has spent vast sums of money in trying to regulate the quality and quantity of corn used and in educating the public on this question.

The experiment with corn was made at the Peoria state hospital. Two squads of patients were taken, each of fifty-nine. Each equad waa placed in a cottage by itself. The members of the equade ranged in ages from 21 to 7S years, with an average of 45 years. They were taken from the demented, untidy class as these seemed to be more susceptible to the disease.

Careful examination was made to determine that none of them ever had shown symptoms of the disease or had none at the time. One squad was placed on an excessive corn diet. From the other squad corn was excluded absolutely. In the corn diet cottage four cases of pel lagra developed with three suspects. On the corn free diet cottage five cases of pellagra developed and with four suspects.

The commission says: "It Is therefore seen by the above that In this rather extended study, corn was not a contributory factor in the production ot this disease. lit Prllacra Deslks la Illlaols. Buoolementfng the commission's report, Dr. George A. Zeller, superintendent of the Hospital for Insane at Peoria, where the most cases have been found, has collected the data on the prevalence and wide dis trlbution of the disease.

It svas first noticed in Italy in the eighteenth century end since then has taken a million people and the Italian government maintains twenty-two public institutions for the victims of this disease. Id Illinois, the disease now claims atout aoo known victims. In Rouiuania, with prac tically the same population as Illinois, there are 40.000 cases. It was nrst recognisea in this country In 186o. but nothing more was heard of it until 1907.

since which lime it spread has been remarkable, and in the fall of 1948 bad become so alarming mat twenty-six states sent representatives to Washington to hold a national conference on the sublect. The disease was recognised at Dunoinir hospital in 1907. and a short time later at the Peoria state hospital for insane. Since Aut. 10.

1909. 125 known deaths from pellagra have been officially reported In Illi nois. I'. In vest lata 1 1 oat PruorJ. WASHINGTON.

D. Jan-. 23. Because pellagra menaces the country, and other diseases are contributing to chronic Invalidism and death, the Secretary of the Treasury today asked Congress for immediate legislation to permit the use of some of the marine hospitals for study of Infectious and other diseases. An accompanying memorandum prepared by Surgeon General Wytaan ot publl: health and marine hospital service, pointed out that pellagra, practically unknown in the United States prior to lit7.

may be said to exist over the entire country. The health officer of a southern state recently estimated the number of cases in his state alone at .0.000.
