The Salina Journal Plus Wednesday, April 4 1990 Must find balance in stress, writer says By CAROL LICHTI Staff Writer Too much stress is bad. But so is too little. "Stress is the spice of life," said June Taylor, an author with a doctorate in adult development. "Not enough stress creates the same low productivity as too much. It's im- Taylor portant to find a balance." Taylor, a native of Bennington, is trying to maintain her own balance.

After 15 years as a therapist, she decided it was time for a change. "I'm taking a break from it," she said. "It was time to shift Taylor has used a car as an analogy to stress in people's lives. She wrote the book "Hot Wired How to Lower Your Stress Voltage." When an automobile is hot-wired, the key switch is bypassed and the car can't be turned off. "The car keeps going, until it crashes or runs out of gas," she said.

"That's what most of us do when we're stressed out." Taylor is in the process of moving from Boulder, to the Salina area. She wants to give seminars about stress management and continue writing. Those who are "hot-wired" are locked into circular thought, she said. Their ways of handling stress don't work, but they keep handling it the same way. "They keep blaming other people or they keep drinking or they keep feeling sorry for themselves and are not dealing with the stress," she said.

Hot-wired people are swamped by anger, resentment or hostility. "It's at the bottom of most of our stress," she said. Many hot-wired people are obsessed with their problems, which ruin everything else in their lives, she said. For example, someone might be obsessed with a past relationship while other problems such as bankruptcy should be given a higher priority. People are hot-wired when: They suffer from physical problems but refuse to take steps to help the situation.

They are dealing with the same problems five years later. Most of their time at work is spent hassling with employees or the boss. They don't feel in control of their life. Once stress is identified, the person needs to determine what the underlying problem is. "My feeling is that we cannot eliminate the stress until we start dealing with ourselves," she said.

"We've dealt with the symptoms, but not the causes." The 1980s have been referred to as the stress decade. It has become fashionable to be under stress, she said. Ways of coping with stress, such as exercise, can help but that doesn't solve the underlying problem. Nutrition also is important for those in stressful situations, but it also is not the total answer, she said. A great part of the answer is dealing with the emotions that caused the stress, such as anger.

It often is suppressed. To deal with those emotions, some type of action should be taken. Those actions will help the person's self- worth, which will increase productivity, she said. People deal with problems by accepting the situation, attempting to change it or leaving it, she said. Taylor made such a decision when she decided to move back to Kansas and get away from the traffic in Boulder.

She left her private practice, but she's not sure for how long. "In six months I could be back at it again," she said.
