Staff Writer A 20-year-old Orangeburg man who was visiting family members at their Wertz Street residence was shot to death Thursday afternoon and authorities have a suspect in custody. Assistant Coroner Joey Taylor said the body of Ronald Anthony Lucas, 20, was transported to the morgue at The Regional Medical Center and an autopsy will be conducted Friday in Newberry by Dr. Joel Sexton.

According to neighbor Trevino Benjamin, 20, he found Lucas inside his mother's home with a gunshot wound to the chest. The kids ran to the door saying their brother was shot," Benjamin said. "When I went inside, I checked him and he was still breathing. That's when I told them to call the sheriffs office." Orangeburg County Assistant Sheriff Chief Nathaniel Hubbard said deputies responded to the call at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, along with Orangeburg County Emergency Medical Services.

At the house, they arrested a man in connection with the murder. Warden Jim Gordon said the suspect was transported to the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention to await formal charges. Since no formal charges have been filed against the suspect, his name was not released or confirmed by the sheriffs office or detention center officials. Detective Barbara Walters is investigating the case. Outside the home, family members were mourning the violent death of Lucas, whom Benjamin said visited his mother and four brothers and sisters on a regular basis.

Lucas' funeral arrangements are being handled by Bethea's Funeral Home of Orangeburg. Thursday's murder marked the ninth reported homicide in Orangeburg County, the last of which took place May 9, when authorities found the body of Alex Sherman Berry in his Cannon Bridge Road home. Berry was found dead in his bed with a wound around his throat area, which authorities said may have been caused by a sharp object. A May 10 autopsy performed in Newberry confirmed the retired painter and widower died from loss of blood contributed to by an open wound. A week later, Detective Barbara Walters signed a warrant against Berry's roommate Marcia H.

Highway Patrolman Roy Odes Caffey. After nearly 22 years of frustration, trying to get law agencies to do more intensive investigations into his father's death, trying to locate "lost or misplaced" files and tapes, Robert Caffey of Orangeburg said he sees a bit of light at the end of the tunnel with the NBC television show's interest in the murder. The case has remained a mystery since Caffey was shot and killed on Interstate 26 in Orangeburg County on Oct. 8, 1972. Robert, the only son of the murdered officer, has made long and determined efforts to get the prestigious television program to do an investigative segment on his father's murder.

White House makes case for potential Haiti invasion By RITA BEAMISH Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON Wary of public opposition, the Clinton administration is carefully making a case for a potential invasion of Haiti, citing political killings and kidnappings and U.S. regional interests as justification. Aides to President Clinton insist he has not made a decision whether to launch a military operation to topple coup leaders in Port-au-Prince. But the president, on more than one occasion, has cited a laundry list of American interests in Haiti when asked about an invasion.

By extension, those interests would become the underpinning for a decision to use force. An invasion would meet an uphill battle in public opinion. Relief organizations and Zairean authorities were swamped by the exodus, one of the greatest in history. Zairean soldiers confiscated machetes and knives, but otherwise could do little more than watch the outpouring of people.

An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 refugees poured past three overwhelmed checkpoints along the border by late afternoon.
