It was a strong qualifying performance for Speed in his first time in the car previously driven by Davey who died July 13 of injuries sustained in a helicopter crash. Speed has only one other top-10 starting position this season, beginning the June race at Michigan eighth. Indy-car driver Robby Gordon filled in for Allison two weeks ago at Talladega, but Speed, who has been driving his own car in an underfunded effort in recent years, was subsequently hired by Robert Yates Racing to drive the car for the rest of the 1993 season.

"Robert and I have a handshake agreement," Speed said. "They've got a front-running race team and they are used to winning races and running up front. If I can keep the car up there, then I feel sure I've got the job for the rest of the year. If I don't, they may find somebody else. "I wasn't surprised at how good the car was," Speed said.

"When you get with one of the best danged teams on the circuit, you don't expect a dog." Others bettering the record included Rusty Wallace at 117.461, defending race winner Kyle Petty 117.186, Bill Elliott 117.127, Ricky Rudd 117.018, Wally Dallenbach Jr. 116.975, rookie Jeff Gordon 116.937 and Ernie Irvan 116.840. By MIKE HARRIS AP Motorsports Writer WATKINS, Glen, N.Y. Mark Martin led Friday's all-out assault on the NASCAR Winston Cup quali-; fying record at Watkina Glen national with a fast lap of 119.118 mph. That was nearly 2V mph faster than the previous Glen stock car record of 116.662, set last August by Dale Earnhardt on the 2.45-mile, nine-turn road circuit. Martin, consistently one of the best road racers in the stock car se-' ries, took the 21st pole of his career, and his third of the season, as he grabbed the top qualifying spot for Sunday's Budweiser at the Glen. The fast lap, which took Martin's Jack Roush-prepared Ford Thun-.

derbird just 1 minute, 14.044 sec- onds, was one of 12 qualifying efforts Friday that eclipsed Earn- hardt's mark. Martin called the fast lap "kind of spectacular in places," then added, "I don't know, I guess everything was pretty spectacular, considering the lap time. But I didn't know it at the tune." There was a delay in reporting the times, so when I came in there was really no reaction from the crowd, so I didn't know if it was a good lap or not," Martin said. "I just figured if it wasn't the pole, well, that's OK because that's the fastest Orangeburg Area Church Directory ORANGEBURG BAPTIST TABERNACLE Rev. The Falcons built a 14-0 lead on Chris Miller's scoring passes of 5 yards to Michael Haynes and 13 yards to Eric Dickerson. The Dolphins gained a 14-14 tie on Aaron Craver's 1-yard run in the first quarter and Marino's 4-yard pass to Keith Byars in the first minute of the second quarter. Johnson's 33-yard field goal gave the Falcons a short-lived 17-14 lead. It was erased on McDuffie's 90-yard return with 7:30 left in the first half. Johnson added a 30-yard field goal in the final minute of the opening half and Kirby gave the Dolphins a 28-20 lead on a 4-yard run in the third.

The Falcons trimmed the final margin to a point on Bobby Hebert's 7-yard pass to David Mima with 52 seconds remaining. Miami recovered an on-sides kick and ran out the clock. The Miami Dolphins left the Atlanta Falcons coach no room to gloat Friday night. Rookie O.J. McDuffie returned a kickoff90 yards for a second-quarter touchdown that gave the Dolphins the lead for good in a 28-27 exhibition victory. McDuffie, Miami's No. 1 draft pick, had three returns for 137 yards.

On his touchdown, he raced up the middle, faking out kicker Norm Johnson inside the Atlanta 50 to gain a clear path to the end zone. Atlanta's coverage troubles began with the opening kick of the game, when rookie Terry Kirby had a 34-yard return. The Falcons survived that start.
