h- 8-. WARPATH Hit -By Druggists, Who Prepare For Attack on McCov Measure. Business of Ohioans Is To Suffer Setback If Resolution Is Adopted. Pharmacists Assert. Republican House Caucus May Be Asked To Take i Action on Election Code Bill ai'CCUL DiirATca To inn axqi'iats.

Columbus, Ohio, April 17. Crippling, if not destruction, of the provisions of the Volstead act relating to their business Is foreseen by pharmacists of the State who to-iuorrow will voice their opposition to the prohibition bill of Senator H. P. McCoy, of Youngstown, before tho Committee on Temperance In the House of Representatives. This bill, drafted by the Anti-Saloon League, socks to limit the medical to the use of grain, or ethyl, alcohol, and forbids physicians prescribing wine, whisky or beer.

-Exception Is made of articles mentioned In the United Slates Pharmacopeia and other official publications In which alcohol Is used as a solvent or preservative In combination with other drugs. The bill contains requirements for licensing by the State Prohibition Commissioner of physicians who propose to prescribe alcohol in their practice, and in othor ways duplicates the Federal act, thus making it extremely troublesome for members of the medical profession and druggist. Old Schemes Incorporated. In addition there are drastic provisions which originally were proposed two' years ago and withdrawn because of their severity. Since tho adoption of the bill by the Senate what was described as uncivil treatment of a delegation of physicians representing the state association the druggists of Ohio have been conducting county meetings and preparing to resist the enactment of the measure In the lower branch.

They have agreed upon two amendments, which will be offered In their name by Representative William C. Wendt, of Columns, a pharmacist. One of these reduces the amount of whisky that can be prescribed in any ten-day perio.1 from one pint to half that amount The other makes the Volstead act provision relating to wine the Ohio law, I. the amount to be prescribed by the attending physician and not be limited by law. It also will be asked that the duplication of permits, and licenses be taken from the bill as onerous and Irritating.

It became known to-day that the Anti-Saloon League may seek to have an emergency clause attached to the bill when It Is' taken up by the committee. May Demand Referendum. This Is due to the fact, druggists say, that a referendum upon the measure may be called unless It Is amended radically and that the medical and pharmacal profeaslons will be found to be supporting such an appeal. Representative Wendt to-day said tlksk It waa. a significant fact that parrot -medlcln manufacturers were not opposing the McCoy bill.

The reason was, he said, that they hoped to profit by its enactment, as alcohol users would turn to their products for the gratification of their appetites. Mr. Wendt also stressed the point that hereafter. If the bill became a law, a person desiring to use any household remedy like essence of peppermint would be required to obtain a prescription from a registered physician and the druggists would have to make a record of each sale. Limitation of whisky to one-half-pint doses Is defended by pharmacists pn the ground that It will compel the rse of wines as a substitute.

The Mc. toy bill's proposal to permit the sale Of one pint of grain alcohol Is denounced as as it will open the way, they- say, for the manufacture ft synthetic whisky, all that Is needed feeing distilled water and flavoring tnatter to make a quart of beverage. Led by Mrs. Harriet; Taylor Upton, of the Republican National Commit-5e, women's political organisations Ohio have declared against the provision of the measure, which seeks to extend the terms of mem "bars of political committees until '1924, the opposition being based on he fact that this will shut out women participation In party affairs intll that year.
