17. Dr. Aaa W. Jayne died last night after a year's Illness. Dr.

Jayne was born In Norwich, years ago. and had practiced medicine here for the laat 21 years. He was graduated from Han ton College and from the Hahnemann Medical College at Philadelphia. Dr. Jayne was coroner of the first Niagara district, having been appointed by Governor Flower to succeed Dr.

C. C. Smith, resigned. He waa a charter member of the North Tonawanda Lodge, P.O.E and was a member of the local order of Select Knights. Besides a widow, two son.

Dr. Luther Jayne of La Salle and Arthur L. Jayne of this city, survive. The funeral will be held from tbe late home on Thursday afternoon. Pat King of Niagara Falls left Estate valued at $15,000.

Lockport, Nov. IT (Special). Letters of administration upon tbe estate of the lata Patrick P. King of Niagara Falls were issued today In surrogate'a court to bis widow. Prances King.

Leon Barclay, eight years old, and Emmer Wertman, nine years old, confessed to th pollqe this morning that they had robbed the candy store of J. P. Warner, the Orpheum and Arcade nlckleodeons, and the Noble Bakery, all within the laat week. They said that George Arndt, ten years old, stood guard while they com mitted the robberies. Sudden Death of a Homell Man, H. C. Ford, in Denver, Hornell, Nov. IT (Special). News was received in this city this morning of the death in Denver last night of Herman C.

Ford of thla city. Mr. Ford went to Colorado laat week for the benefit of his health. Hla death was entirely unexpected. Mr.

Ford waa on of the best-known life-insurance men In this part of the state. He Is survived by his wife and nine small children. He was 47 yeara old and had been a resident of Hornell for a score of yeara, formerly having conducted a business school here. The body Is being brought to this city for burial Genesee Supervisor to choose Highways Superintendent. Batavla, Nov.

The an ew County board of supervisors hat made a special order of business of tba naming of a new county officer, to be known as county superintendent of highways, The office will be created under section 30 of article HI of the new highway law. The new official wilt have control of all highways and bridge in the county, all roads, whether Improved or not, and general supervision great powers under the new road commission, who wtll be hla superior officers. Le Roy Man says Neighbor split his Head with Stone. Le Roy, Nov, 17 (Special). Philip Walter, a well-known resident of thia village, was given a hearing this morn Ing boore Justice N. A. Macpherson on a charge of assault in tha second de gree on Henry Miller of Erie street As Walter did not put In any defense, he wa held to await the action of the grand Jury and was released on a bond of 1200.

The charge on which Walter Is held was committed. It Is alleged, on July 7th laat, although he was not arrested until November 12th. Miller, in his com plaint, alleges that while he was hav ing a quarrel with another man In Mil ler's yard, Walter, who la a neighbor. came Into his yard and struck him on Ui top of the head with, a large stone while hi (Miller's) hands were held by the other man. Miller says that hla head was so badly cut that It required aeveraj sutcbe to close tha wound.

The trial of George Gasaett of Rochester? charged with tbo murder of Chauncey Harmon, a seventeen-year-old boy, ended aud- denly at 110 o'clock thla afternoon, when Justice Lambert directed the Jury to retire and bring In a verdict of acquittal. Oassett was Immediately rearrested upon the charge of burglary and robbery In the first degree. Tha action of Justice Lambert fol lowed the evidence introduced for the defence by three witnesses, Oeorge Wentworth, John Rosisky and Dr. W.

H. Loom is, that John Burt, the principal witnesa tor tha people and Harmon' partner, had told them he was unable to identify Gaasett. Harmon was sleeping with Burt on the night that three men entered the room and one of them struck him over the head, fracturing hla skull. Burt was also struck and he waa taken to the City Hospital, where he revived In a few days. Hla unconsciousness came partly from a blow and partly from a prolong, ed drunk.

U. S. ORDERS ENGINES Brooks Plant must turn out ten of the five-foot Gauge Kind for Use on the Isthmus of Panama. Special to Tha BuSal Exprau. Dunkirk, Nov.

17. An order for ten engine for the government railroad on the Isthmus of Panama haa been placed with the Brooks plant for January delivery. Tha engines ara to ba of five-foot gauge and duplicates of an order built tor that railroad at the local plant a year or so ago. A large order of pig Iron tor ISO has been placed by the purchasing department of the American Locomotive Com pany, 8,000 tons of which are to be for the Brooks plant. Young Jamestown Mother drinks Poison in Street, Jamestown, Nov.

Mrs. Charles Nelson of Wlllard street attempted aulcide last night by taking a heavy dose of morphine while on South Main street Almost Immediately after swallowing the poison she stepped Into the waiting-room of the Warren-Jamea town btreet-car office and aank Into a stupor. A physician was called. She was with difficulty relieved of the poison and restored to consciousness.

At a special meeting of the common council last night two bids were received on tha revised plana, but they were so near the amount bid tor tha original plana that the council decided not to accept them e.t this time.

If the superintendent of public work accepts the bid of the United Engineering A Contracting Company of for the Improvement of the Erie Canal in this city. It mean that many of the tores on lower Main street and the city fire-alarm tower will have to be moved. The contract Is for the Improvement of the canal from the head of the lock to Pendleton, ancHt is one of the biggest and most difficult along the Una of the Improvement. Some of the stores on the north side of Main street will be cut off so that lea thsn fifteen-foot depth will be left. Several warehouses along the berm bank of the canal will have to be rased.

Gray against the Woodmen of the World for 11.190. After a search or almost a year. Oray. who had disappeared from thla city with S40e of the fund of Camp Lowry. W.O.W.; wa found in Cleveland, and was brought to this city for trial.

For several days his fsmlly re fused to believe that he waa tba hus band and father who had gone away. They finally came to the conclusion that he was after about SO of bis former acquaintance had recognised him. After tbe finding of the body at wll son and its Identification by Mrs. Gray as that of her husband, she made appli cation to tha Woodmen for 11,000 lnsur anoe and $10 for a monument, a sum which tha order sets aside for each of its members. Tha officials of the order were positive that tha body was not that of Oray, and tbey would not pay over the money.

So Mrs. Oray sued. Gray gave evidence of insanity while locked up pending trial, and after an examination aa to his sanity, waa sent to the Matteawan hospital, where he now is confined. SHOT MAN, NOT RABBIT. Hunter hiding behind a Tree waiting for Came to appear, lets fly at Fred Northrup of Bath.

A hunter waa In waiting for a rabbit, and as Northrup and a companion appeared In tha ahrubbery aeveraj roda in front of tha waiting hunter, tha man mistook Northrup and his compan Ion for game and biased away.

Northrup received tha entire charge of shot. Because of the distance, Northmp'a clothing protected his body and tha body wounda are slight. One shot, however. Imbedded itself In his right temple, within a quarter of an Inch of tha eye. A physician finally succeeded In removing tha shot, and Northrup congratulates hlmaelf that ha scaped with unimpaired vision.

Home has been served with a summons in a Supreme Court ault brought by the New York Central Railroad against this city for I13J.40, for work done In laying water mains under the Central track at the north end of tha city.
