vat from General Sakharoff, announcing a series of. outposts fights in the Tental SIs- trict. whtth It has been supposed had been entirely evacuated by the Russians. The inference drawn from General Sak-haroff's report by military experts here is that Oyama'a main adrsnce has either been delayed or Intercepted and that the Japanese are now for the first time la the war on the defensive tn the vicinity of the Tental Reports from Mukden declare that the situation has changed completely and that the Japanese hare abandoned their offensive tactics for the present and are fortifying atrong defensive positions northwest of the Yental Karopatkla Takee Offeaaltre. The activity of General Sakharoff's division has only one meaning to authorities on the war here that General Kuropatkln has taken advantage ot the apathy shown by Field Marshal Oyama and has taken the offensive In certain parts of the field of operations.

His object, it Is believed. Is to harass the Japanese by swift cavalry attacks and de-May the advance as long as possible. Absolutely no news is available regarding the operations on the left flank of the Russian army. It is reported from St. Petersburg that Important dispatches have been cent to the Csar at Odessa, and that it is believed these have reference to the operations on the left flank.

The delay in the resumption of aggressive action by Oyama Is explained in a dispatch from Mukden as due to the imperative necessity of making good the heavy losses which -the- Japanese suffered at Llao Tang. There Is also said to have been great delay in bringing up stores and munitions. Re-enforcements of fresh troops are being constantly added to the Russian army at Llao Tang. Enormous quantities of stores are also arriving, according to reports from Mukden. This tends to dispel the belief that Kuropatkln was preparing to abandon and remove the bulk of his troops to north.

JAPANESE RAILROAD OFFICIAL I SAYS WAR WILL WORK GOOD that the war with Russia will leave com-ircial and industrial interests ot Japan in better condition than before hostilities nmenced is the belief of S. Ida of Kobe, tan. who is a guest st the Auditorium An-. He also declared that the railroads ot the United States and of England and their methods of operation are inferior to those of Japan. Mr.

Ida is an official of the Sanyo Railway company, a private corporation, operating some 400 miles- between Kobe and along the inland sea. He. is making a tour of Europe and the United States, studying the various great railroads and their oper- ating methods. "While all building and other industries bearing on the future are at a standstill during the present war with Russia." said Mr. Ida, "there Is a firm feeling among capitalists that when the war is over Jspan will experience the greatest commercial boom of Its history." No Clothing Fits Like Ours." 45.000 JAPANESE IS LONG SIEGE'S COST Statistics of Dead and Wounded Show Appalling Loss to General Nogi's Army in Vain Attacks. Special Cable Dispatch to The Inter Ocean. ST. PETERSBURG. Sept.

30. An entirely new and brighter aspect has been given to the condition of affairs at Port Arthur by the receipt of official news from the Russian consulate at Chefoo saying that every assault made by he Japanese from Sept. 20 to Sept. 26 was successfully beaten otT by General Stoessel's troops. The desperate anxiety which has been felt her for the past week has been completely, set at rest, and the prediction is confidently made by members ot the general staff that the fortress can almost certainly hold out until the beginning of the year if not longer.

Authentic Information which has reached the War Office estimates the Japanese losses In front ot Port Arthur since the beginning of the siege at 45.000 in killed and wounded. These figures are indicative of the desperate nature of the attempt made by General Nogl to reduce the fortress before the advent ot the winter season. Japanese I.oaa Appallinar. According to authoritative information from Chefoo the Japanese loss in the last assualts which have been made on the fortress have been appalling. The story of each individual attack Is the same a reckless and daring advance right up to the Russian positions, and a retreat under the terrific shell Are from the large forts.

While the Japanese losses In the siege have been enormous, it is believed by tbe general staff that the losses In the fortress have been comparatively slight. No ot-ficial estimate of the fatalities among General Stoessel's troops has been given out. but it is understood that they comprise only a very small traction of the terrific loss inflicted on General Nogi's army. The authorities at the War Office discredit the report from Chefoo that the Japanese have captured any of the main forts at Port Arthur. It is believed here that all the moreim- num i uarirur.

it miunii mni eeri Russians have attempted to leave Port Arthur and have' been captured and held as prisoners by the Japanese. A report from Chefoo today says that a Japanese torpedo-boat destroyer at midnight last night landed near Chefoo eigtheen coolies whom the Japanese had taken from a Junk which was attempting to run the blockade and carry mail from Port Arthur. The captured Junk was burned. The Chinese say that two Russians, disguised as kept prisoners on the destroyer and that two Chinese probably perished In the flames of the burning Junk. Chinese who left Port Arthur Sept.

27 say that the last assault was the old story over again, the Japanese intrepidly entering the Russian positions, but being unable to remain In face of the terrific shell Are. STUDENT IS DROWNED It! LAKE Body of Missing. Frances Parkhurst Found Where She Had Tallen From Rotten Pier. (Continued from First Page.) and did not attenrl her At 12:15 o'clock she was seen by Katherine Vincent, daughter of former Judge Vincent, to leave tbe school building and walk toward the lake. She was without coat or hat. and dressed in a light shirt waist, a stock, and a blue skirt.

It is thought she went to the lake and attempted to reach the end of the dilapidated pier. The pier has cross boards only In places, and a person walking to Its end must make his way on an eight inch beam, whose middle Is lined with heavy spikes. Three college men, athletic and nimble, attempted to reach the end of the structure yesterday, and two of them barely escaped falling into the water. A lame girl would have great difficulty in accomplishing the feat, and it Is thought Miss Parkhurst tripped on one of the spikes, and while trying to recover her balance looked down Into the water and was attacked by one of her dizzy spells. Without a witness to her plight, she fell Into the water and was drowned.

Often Visited Beach. Miss Parkhurst was In the habit of visiting the beach and walking out on the piers, especially a stone pier north of the one near which she was found. President Harlan Is of the opinion she fell from the stone pier and that her body was carried to tbe other one by the, undertow, but Captain Charles Carlend of the life saving station said last night that a body Is not influenced by the undertow in twelve feet of water, the depth in which she waa found, and gave It as his opinion that the girl fell into the lake where her body was- discovered. Miss Parkhurst'a absence was noted short ly after 3 o'clock. It was not until 5 o'clock that alarm was felt, however, and the search for her was then begun.

Two hundred stu-' from the lake with a long dragging rake. He had starched the same place the night before, but in the darkness and with a shorter rake his quest was unavailing: Was Brla-kt aid Happy. Miss Lilian Brinkmao. Miss Parkburst's roommate, the girl whd knew her tm8t intimately at the halli said yesterday that her companion had nerer appeared despondent or sad, and that she was not of a disposition to brood or keep silent on matters that were troubling her. Miss Frances Hughes, head of Perry Hall, denied the statement made early 1b the day that Miss Parkhurst had lired a life of her own, apart from the other students.

"She -was a bright, happy little girl." said Miss Hughes. "She mixed with the other girls, and I am sure that everybody who knew her will say she. did not take her own life. Dizziness undoubtedly caused her to fall into the lake." IMPORTED MEN LEAVE ZEIGLER. tsios Miser Past the Eid Italians From tltr.
