PAOBBKHRBBir (ARK.y COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1«, 1968 Truman D«nie« Columist's Report KAN8A8 CITY Wl—Harry S. Truman says a report that he has made up his mind to support Adlai Stevenson tor the Democratic presidential nomination "is not based on fact." The former president said in a statement Wednesday that "no one speaks for me on my choice o{ candidates—or my opinion concerning; my one of them." Truman referred to a story by columnist Roscoe Drummond of the New York Herald Tribune. The ar- ticle said that although Truman personally prefers New York's Gov. Averell Harrlman "he has made up his mind — and has so informed a number of his closer associates — that Stevenson's nomination is the most practicable, politically-wise course." Drummond said last night in Washington the column was a report of conversations Truman has had with political leaders in the East. The columnist added thai "it will be Interesting to wait and see Army to leave Corner TOKYO MV-The U. S. Army said today it would move its main junior officers' and civilian barracks from downtown Tokyo to the city outskirts. The move may doom Tokyo's naughty corner of "4th and Y," a busy downtown street by day and a prostitute's promenade by nlsht. (ff"t —One of America's top military men says Russia's attitude of "sweetness and light" has caused a "tendency to let down" among the countries of Western Europe. Gen. J. Lawton Collins made the statement Wednesday in a talk to the Associated Press Managing Editors Assn., which is holding its annual convention here. Collins, U.S. representative on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization staff, said Russia is trying to destroy NATO by fostering complacency among the 13 nations in the alliance. . He said the Communists feared NATO not because of any threats of a military attack but because the organization gives Western Europeans strength and courage to withstand the pressure from Russia. Collins quoted Nikita Khrushchev, general secretary of the Communist party, as having said anyone who has believed Russia has abandoned the teaching of Marx, Lenin and Stalin ie badly mistaken.
