Senior tailback Orlando Goodhope closed out his career Saturday with his greatest day ever, running for 318 yards and five touchdowns to lead Norfolk State's Spartans to a 43-20 CIAA football victory over Livingstone's Bears. Goodhope, who carried 23 times, set a school record with his five touchdowns and the 318 yards. He scored on runs of 3, 2, 19, 70 and 30 yards as Norfolk State closed out 3-4 in the CIAA and 5-5 overall. Livingstone finished 3-4 in the CIAA and 5-4 overall.

Miami (Fla.) 17 Florida St 16 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Jeff Davis kicked a 19-yard field goal as time ran out to give sixth-ranked Miami a 17-16 victory Saturday night over intrastate rival Florida State and boost the Hurricanes' chances of going to the Orange Bowl. Miami ran its record to 10-1 while the Seminoles fell to 6-4 before a record crowd of 57,333 in FSU's Doak Campbell stadium. Davidson scored two first-quarter touchdowns on quarterback Keith Martin's 1-yard run with 7:55 left and Martin's 3-yard pass to Bob Miller with 1:12 left in the period. Charles Showers kicked the extra points. Catawba, 0-8-1, rallied with a 10-play, 45-yard drive which ended on Reggie White's 2-yard run with 1:03 left in the half. White's run for the two-point conversion failed, but the Indians got the ball back on Jay Aldredge's 25-yard pass interception return. On the next play, Bobby Myers passed 8 yards to Jeff Taylor for the score and Taylor passed to David Brown for the two-point conversion and a tie score 25 second before halftime.

Western Carolina 43 Gardner-Webb 7 CULLOWHEE, N.C. Junior quarterback Jeff Gilbert threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more TDs as Western Carolina rolled past Gardner-Webb 43-7 Saturday in college football. Gilbert completed 17 of 29 passes, including touchdown passes of 36, 24 and 5 yards. He also scored on two 1-yard runs as Western Carolina, ranked 18th in the NCAA Division I-AA poll, upped its record to 7-2-1. The Catamounts, which has not lost in their last eight games, grabbed a 2-0 lead on a safety.

Gilbert's first TD run upped its lead to 9-0 with five minutes gone. Gilbert's 36-yard pass to split end Kristy Riser and his second 1-yard run upped the Catamounts' lead to 23-0 at the end of the first period. Dean Biasucci kicked the first of two field goals to make it 26-0 early in the second period. Biasucci also kicked a 48-yard field goal in the final period and added five PATs to push his career scoring total to 252, Michigan 58 Minnesota 10 MINNEAPOLIS Michigan quarterback Steve Smith tossed a trio of touchdown passes and ran for three more as the ninth-ranked Wolverines buried Minnesota 58-10 Saturday night, saddling the Gophers with their 16th Big Ten defeat in a row. Smith ran the ball four times for a career-high 143 yards, including touchdowns of 75, 20 and 50 yards.

Michigan running back Greg Armstrong's 1-yard touchdown plunge and a 51-yard field goal gave the Wolverines, 7-1 in the Big Ten, plenty of breathing room. East Tennessee State freshman running back Herman Jacobs rushed for a school record 237 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Buccaneers to a 45-0 Southern Conference football victory over The Citadel Saturday night. East Tennessee broke open a 3-0 contest with 28 points in the second quarter to up its overall record to 3-7 and Southern Conference mark to 1-6. The Citadel's Bulldogs are now 3-7 and 1-5.

Defensive back Ashley Lee returned intercepted passes 94 and 88 yards for touchdowns, setting an NCAA record in the process, as Virginia Tech's Hokies downed Vanderbilt's Commodores 21-10 in college football Saturday. Lee's first touchdown broke open a scoreless game in the third quarter. He caught the ball after Kurt Page's Shovel pass was deflected by receiver Keith Edwards at the Tech 12.

With Tech leading 14-3 in the last quarter, Lee intercepted Page's pass at the Tech 6 and went all the way to give the Hokies their eighth victory in 10 games. The 182 yards on the interceptions broke the record of 181 yards set by Charles Phillips of Southern Cal against Iowa in 1974. The loss dropped Vanderbilt to 2-8. Hofstra 31 Coast Guard 10 HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. Bob McKenna scored three touchdowns on runs of 15, and 17 yards to lead undefeated Hofstra to a 31-10 college J.C.

Smith 18 FayettevilleSt .7 CHARLOTTE, N.C. Sophomore quarterback Eddie Glaze came off the Johnson C. Smith bench in the second quarter to lead the Golden Bulls to a 18-7 CIAA football victory over Fayetteville State. Glaze engineered scoring drives of 67 and 84 yards in the second quarter. Darrel Wesley's 1-yard touchdown run and Glaze's 12-yard pass to Kelvin Hopkins gave the Golden Bulls a 12-0 lead.

Shelton Johnson missed an extra point kick and a pass for a two-point conversion after the scoring pass failed. The Broncos, 1-8-1 and 1-5-1, narrowed the gap to 12-7 when quarterback Kevin Wardlaw came off the Fayetteville State bench to drive the team 59 yards, capped by Ben Knox's 1-yard plunge. East Carolina 40 6 GREENVILLE, N.C. Running backs Earnest Byner, Tony Baker and Jimmy Walden scored two touchdowns apiece as East Carolina rolled over William Mary 40-6 in college football Saturday. The Pirates scored on their first possession, built a 27-0 lead at intermission and coasted to their seventh victory against three losses.

The Indians fell to 5-5. Byner scored his second touchdown with 3:33 left in the third quarter, boosting East Carolina's lead to 33-0. The Pirates took a punt at their own 23 and, keyed by Baker's 44-yard run, drove to the William Mary 1 before Byner dove for the score. A two-point conversion try failed. The Indians finally scored with 13:10 left.

They drove 80 yards in 13 plays, ending with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Dave Murphy to tight end Glenn Bodnar. Dave Scanlon's conversion run failed. Appalachian State 28 Marshall 19 BOONE, N.C. Senior tailback Alvin Parker rushed for a career-high 222 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns Saturday to lead Appalachian State to a 28-19 Southern Conference football victory over Marshall. The victory assures Appalachian State, 6-4 and 4-2 in the conference, of its first winning season since 1980.

Tech, 3-7 and 3-2 in the ACC, trailed 17-14 at halftime before exploding for five touchdowns after intermission to overpower the Demon Deacons, 4-7 and 1-5 in the conference. Dewberry scored on runs 30 and 1 yards in the third quarter while Ronnie Cone, who also went over the 100-yard rushing mark with 111 yards, added a five-yard TD. Collier notched his 25-yarder and Dewberry plunged over from 1-yard out in the final period.

Wake Forest, dropping its sixth game in seven starts, managed a 2-yard touchdown run by Michael Ramseur, a 26-yard field goal by Danny Nolan and a 28-yard scoring pass from Gary Schofield to Duane Owens in the second half. Tech took a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter on Collier's 42-yard scamper and a 5-yard run by Keith Glanton before Wake Forest came alive. Ramseur sprinted over from 7 yards for one score and Scofield connected on a 7-yard scoring pass to Owens. Nolan then added a 41-yard field goal to give Wake Forest its 17-14 lead at the half. Goodrich wind breaker Compiled from wire reports CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Led by quarterback Wayne Schuchts, Virginia struck for two quick touchdowns in the third quarter, held North Carolina scoreless in the second half and upset the 19th-ranked Tar Heels 17-14 Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game. A record Scott Stadium crowd of 42,933 watched Virginia claim its first victory over North Carolina since 1973. The Cavaliers improved their record to 6-4, assuring themselves their first winning season since 1979 and only their third since 1952. Carolina, losing for the third straight week, fell to 7-3.

Trailing 14-3 at halftime, Virginia scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes midway the third quarter. The Cavaliers went 54 yards in Just five plays on their first possession of the second half, Schuchts passing 33 yards to tight end Billy Griggs for the touchdown. Griggs caught the pass at the Tar Heels' 10 and shook off defenders Willie Harris and Steve Hendrickson before high-stepping into the end zone. Four plays later, a jarring tackle by Virginia, strong safety Lester Lyles forced Carolina tailback Ethan Horton to fumble at the Tar Heels' 19. Cavalier defensive end Mark Wiley recovered.

Schuchts, who was 15 of 25 for 187 yards, connected with split end Billy Smith for a 15-yard gain to the Carolina 4 on first down, and tailback Howard Petty scored from the 1 two plays later to give Virginia a 17-14 lead with 7:49 left in the third quarter. North Carolina, which had beaten Virginia nine straight times, had the ball on six occasions after falling behind but could not get the go-' ahead score.
