William Hays, East Penn street. PROBABLY FATALLY INJURED William Durf of Shlppensburg Struck by Tree at Hagerstown. The n.agerstown Herald says: 'William Durf, of Bhlppensburp, was seriously and probably fatally Injured by a tree falling on and crush lng him in Bryan's woods, east of this city, about eleven o'clock Friday morning. Durf was employed In gang under Joseph Shaner cutting the timber from a tract of 80 acres and while engaged In felling a tree was caught. His body, arms and hands were crashed, bat his head escaped.

The unoonsolous man was carried to the camp and a physician summoned His recovery is not expected. Rela tives at Shlppensburg were notified of the accident. Durf was cared for la the camp In the woods and will be taken to Shlppensburg today. He is aged 35 and unmarried." The proper authorities should see to It that the street at the Court House equare where trolley cars stop is properly macadamized. There are 7 or 8 mud holes there now. Splendid Work Being Done by Stale So ciety. Who will be the generous hearted citizen to give the ground for site for proposed home for aged deaf. The Pennsylvania society, which is one of the most active in ex lstence is laaving no stone unturned for the successful culmlna tlon of Its plans. A memberahip ranges from 100 to 200. It id not confined to the deaf alone; but hearing persons Interested In their welfare may join the society and enjoy all the privileges except holding office.

Dues are 11,00 for gentlemen and 50 cents for ladies, payable annually on or before the first Monday In July. Since Its Inception in 1331, the so cletv has worked in various ways to ameliorate the condition of the deaf. The home fund amounts to $5,208.62 (May 30th, 1931), which has been raised chiefly by means of entertainments, lawn fetes, bsziars, lectures, and one half of the membershio dues in this society. This sum Is wholly Inade quate- It Is desired to raise $5000 more at once in order to purchase a site and start the home, the necessity of which Is becoming more apparent each year. The deaf, as a rule, are Industrious and self-supporting.

Their lot Is not so happy as It should be, owing to so clal isolation and mental stagnation It Is the desire of the society to make proper provision for such unfortunate brethren and othera hence the neces slty of a Special home. The fact Is, the average person can walk at a pace of five miles an hour, and It seems very restrictive to limit the apeed of these vehicle to that pace.

It would seem more like the thing to have made It ten miles an hour, and council will be probably be asked to reconsider the matter, The annual statement of the school board of Shlppensburg shows the gross receipts to have been $10,405.61, and expenditures about the same. Two thousand dollars was for "notes and Interests," the balance were for run ning expenses They have twelve schools, nine months, fourteen teach ers and 578 scholars. LANDI3-Bowmansdalk, July 13. Mrs. Landie, wife of Rev. Daniel Landla, died at her home at this place, Friday afternoon at four o'clock, after an Illness of about four month, aged over 70 years. Some months ago Mr.

Land Is went to Manheim, Lancaster county, for the removal of a cancer, and returned to her home with the hope of again regaining her health, but dropsy set in, which was the immediate cause of death. Mrs Landis was an estimable Christian lady, and by her kind and lovable disposition had won many friends She was for many years a member of the German Baptist church. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. George Shettle and Ella at home, and two brothers, Ilenry, of Center (Square, John, of Tlarrisburg, and two sisters. Mrs.

Joseph Bowman, of DUlsburg, and Mrs. Wm. Stone, of Mechanlcs-burg. Funeral services will be held Monday. Interment at Mobler's graveyard, At Blddle Chapel Last NU'ht.

The stereoptlcon entertainment at Blddle chapel last night was a great success. C. F. Fought was the lecturer and held the close attention of the audience by his most interesting explanation of the pictures. Wm.

Ornamgnts to Commemorate Manila Bay Victory Being Put In Position Admiral Dewey's flagship Olympla will be a much better ship when she goes into commission at the Charles town navy yard than she was on May 1, 1893, when the famous battle at Manila Bay was fought. On Thursday the stem ornament, designed to commemorate the ship's great victory, is being attached to the hull. The stern piece was set up a few days ago.

Naval Constructor William J. Bax ter, head of the department of con struction and repair, first conceived the idea of these ornaments, and he at once set about obtaining the consent of the navy department to put them on. Some of the bronze used in casting the two pieces was taken from the Olympia, and this givea added value to them. The stem ornament is the more elaborate aad really Is a work of art. A winged Victory holds high above her head an eagle, which she is about to launch in the air.

Victory's wings lie against the sides of the ship's prow. The stern Jplece con-iits of a shield with a mass of scroll work on either side. Capt. B. P.

Lamberton, who knows 'a thing or two" about the "Olympia," told a Kkktinel reporter today that aha will be in commission In about a month. Work on Trolley Line. Work has commenced on the trolley line between Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill, which is to connect Mechanics burg with Harrisburg, and farmers living along the route have been notified to put back their fences to the proper distance. Rails and ties have been distributed to within sight of Shiremanstown, and at the latter place a quantity of ties are stored ready to be distributed. Peaches Will ba Plentiful Here.
