Moat cara, Compiled from wire reports CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Rick Badanjek scored four touchdowns two coming in 10 seconds late in the third quarter and Maryland romped to a 34-23 Atlantic Coast Conference football victory over North Carolina Saturday. Fumbled kickoff returns played a key role in the third quarter and helped North Carolina break a 10-10 tie. Keeta Convington lost two kickoffs to the Tar Heels, who converted them into a pair of 39-yard field goals by Ken Miller. After Miller's second field goal, Jess Atkinson retaliated with a 43-yard field goal with 6:29 left in the period to pull the Terrapins to within 16-13.

Badanjek, who caught a 10-yard scoring pass from quarterback Stan Gelbaugh just before halftime to tie the score, capped a 90-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run with 22 seconds left in the period. Atkinson's kick helped give Maryland its first lead at 20-16. Earl Winfield fumbled Atkinson's kickoff and Sean Scott recovered at the North Carolina 4. Badanjek scored on the next play and Atkinson's kick with 12 seconds left raised Maryland's lead to 27-16. Badanjek's last score came with 7:44 left to play on a 5-yard dash through the right side of the Tar Heel defense.

North Carolina's last score came on Wes Sweetser's 9-yard pass to Eric Streater with 44 seconds left. Maryland took its third straight victory and raised its record to 5-3. The Terrapins climbed to 4-0 in the ACC and extended its lead on Virginia, which has a 2-0-1 league mark. North Carolina fell to 3-5 and 1-2. Senior tailback Ethan Horton rushed 35 times for 126 yards and a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The victory snapped a four-game winless streak for the Yellow Jackets, 4-3-1 for the year and 1-1-1 in the ACC.

It was the seventh consecutive defeat for Duke, 1-7 and 0-3. Dewberry, who completed 13 of 19 passes, fired scoring shots of 18 yards to Gary Wilkins in the first quarter, 5 yards to Ken Whisenhunt in the third and 13 yards to Mike Harrington in the fourth. Robert Lavette, who had 114 yards on 20 carries, scored the other Jacket touchdown on a 12-yard run and David Bell completed the scoring with a 34-yard field goal. Don Majkowski threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Geno Zimmerlink on Saturday, and Virginia's rugged defense smothered 12th-ranked West Virginia to upset the Mountaineers 27-7 in a non-conference college football. The Cavaliers, 6-1-1, dominated the 7-2 Mountaineers from the outset, mounting a 351-85 rushing edge and controlling both lines of scrimmage as scouts from five bowls and a stunned crowd of 56,453 watched. Majkowski's pass to Zimmerlink with 23 seconds left in the first period ended a 58-yard play drive. West Virginia drove to the Virginia 6-yard line on the next series, but safety Bob Sweeney intercepted a third down pass in the end zone when quarterback Kevin White underthrew to split end Wayne Brown. Kenny Stadlin kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5:53 left in the half to give the Cavaliers a 10-0 lead.

Virginia broke it open with 4:16 left in the third quarter when fullback Steve Morse raced 51 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-0.
