On September 30, 1964 the second Carlisle Food Market was opened at The Carlisle Plaza. One of the first stores to open at the new plaza, it was the first food store in Carlisle to offer an in store delicatessen and bakery. NEW GENERAL OFFICES ROUTE 1 1 SHADY LANE, CARLISLE. (COMPLETED FALL 1972) In June, 1968, Mr. Javitch became Chairman of the Board and his son, Lee, became president.

Under Lee's dynamic leadership and his highly qualified executive staff the company plunged into an even more rapid growth pattern. In 1969 the company acquired Martin's Food Market in Hagerstown. Under the Martin's name additional stores were opened in Waynesboro, Martinsburg, West Virginia, and Hagerstown. CarlisleGiant Foods entered into another agreement in 1970 and opened 3 stores in New Jersey under the Fourth corporate name of Clover-Markets. Mr.

David Javitch, whose name is synonymous with Food Retailing in Carlisle can now sit back with pride and see his dream growing with each passing year. None of this dream would have been possible without the loyalty and dedication of the many company employees. Carlisle Food Markets, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, thank the people of Carlisle for their continued faith and support over the years and for contributing to the progress of Carlisle Foods. 1973 heralds the 50th Anniversary of a food chain who had its humble beginnings in Carlisle back in 1923. The Carlisle Meat Market, as it was known then, at 18 N.

Hanover St. employed only 2 people. Today it has grown to 18 stores in four states employing just under 1 000. The man behind this success story is Mr. David Javitch whose foresight in 1923 led to the founding of Carlisle Food Market.

Mr. Javitch foresaw the coming age of the modern supermarket. Then, after the disastrous fire in 1938 that completely destroyed the meat market, he opened the first modern self-service food store in Carlisle at 22 N. Hanover Street. Later, in 1953 the store was moved to 100 N.

Hanover Street where it became Carlisle Food Market. Since its conception, Mr. Javitch opened other stores in other towns under the second corporate name of Giant. Named Giant for the Giant selection of foodstuffs all under one roof. Today, Giant stores can be found in Lewistown, Chambersburg, Shamokin Dam, Gettysburg, Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, and Harrisburg.
