8 The WHEELWOMAN ROUND AND ABOUT. Those who desire to become members of the Catford Ladies' Cycle Club will have to give an undertaking that they will eschew rational" dress when participating in club runs and other fixtures, inasmuch as the Captain," Mrs. Pulton, and her colleagues have thus decreed by formal resolution. Cheltenham. mixed club has been started in the West of Western Rational Dress encourage this dress among lady riders, its male members being of opinion that skirts prevent up-hill riding, and endanger riding down.

The headquarters are at Cheltenham. Clapham. young lady cyclist named Miss Woodward, of 129, Beauford Road, as going up Clapham High Street when a baker's van came rapidly out of Manor Street, and, before she could get clear, came in collision with her machine. The front wheel was smashed and lamp damaged, but the lady herself managed to escape injury. After some delay the machine was removed and the lady proceeded homewards, thankful that no more serious results had been occasioned by the sudden collision.

the past week there have been further signs of the development of cycling in the far north. Last year the increase of the votaries of the sport amongst the fair sex was of a phenomenal character, and this year the demand for machines shows that the ladies are more fascinated than ever with the wheel. Several large halls have been hired as riding schools, and one of the latest, and perhaps the most important venture, is the taking of the lower suite of the Grand Assembly Rooms for the purpose of instructing the ladies in the art of cycle riding. The Grand Assembly-Rooms are a handsome pile of buildings, which are principally used for banquets and balls. However, they are admirably adapted for a riding school, and it will doubtless be the means of attracting additional numbers of the elite onto the steel steed.

Creole- Two more clubs were added 4gj the Centre's list, Goole Lady Wheelers' C.C. and Bowling C.C, but not before one ungallant member had taken exception to the admission of a club of ladies to membership. Mr. E. Hickson intends to move at the Council meeting on the 27th, that the business of the Union be divided and controlled by a Racing Committee and a General Purposes Committee, as is now done in the West Riding.

is curious if not comical analogy between two such widely different creatures as a bicycle tyre and a camel, which an Indian gentleman (and of course a cyclist) has discovered. At first sight no points of similarity present themselves, but we learn that two of the camel's worst enemies are punctures and side-slip. On a greasy road, which, of course, is the exception in the hot countries where the camel is used, the ship of the desert is literally all at sea. He cannot walk, he cannot even stand; he flounders, struggles, and falls. It is side-slip in its worst form.

In the soft jv sand of the desert or thick dust of the Indian roads, punctures, whether to camel's feet or bicycle tyres, are seldom met with, but they are far more troublesome with the former when they do occur. You cannot slip off the case, put a blob of solution in the inner side of the wound, replace and reinflate all in a minute or two, as may be done with one of the newest and best-known tyres, but a delay of some hours, and possibly longer, may be necessary. Keighley. The town of Keighley will probably be en fete this week to celebrate the opening of the new cyclist's clubhouse in Cavendish Street. The preparations are on a Royal visit" scale.

The artistic six-page programme intimates that a procession will take place from the oldclubrooms at three o'clock on Tuesday, and the opening ceremony by Mrs. Feather Whittaker, will take place at 3.30. Dinner, which will be served at 4.45, is to be followed by a concert at 7, and dancing from 8.15 to 2 a.m. On Wednesday a couple of well-known billiard players will the billiard tables; and dancing will take place at the Social Room from 8.15 to 1 a.m. Thursday will be devoted to a musical evening, and the festivities will be wound up on Friday with a concert and dancing.

Leicester. A lady and gentleman named Palmer, husband and wife, lately met with a serious cycle accident at Leicester. They were riding a tandem machine, and had reached the outskirts of the borough, when, in trying to avoid one cart, they collided with another, with such force that the vehicle was overturned, while the tandem was smashed to pieces. Both riders were badly hurt, and were removed in a cab to the infirmary, where they were detained. Mr.

and Mrs. Palmer belong to London. we hear, has the best bicycle track in Europe. It is one of the most modern things about the old Russian capital, and is situated on the plains of Kodinsky, the recent catastrophe occurred. The track is 600 metres, less than three laps to the mile, all of cement, with steep banking at the turns, and has a system of electric timing which works very successfully.

There are more than 4000 cyclists in the city, and ten large clubs. Oxford- cycle continues to make headway in the Universities. Cambridge men have always been in favour of the pastime, and its progress is followed closely by them. In Oxford there was at first a decided tendency to regard cycling with little favour, but now that it has become the thing," Oxonians have begun to take more interest in it. They wish to be always fashionable at Oxford, you know..
