The Hanoverian Piquets have agaia ftopped and feized upon the Elbe 20 Barrels filled with Mulquet Charges, which were fendiag to the Gaxrifoa of the Callle of Harbourg. Ultzen, Dec. 18. The poor City of Zell is really to be pitied, for befides thofe Calamities that are to be con- fidered as the natural Confequences of War, it has fered feveral Acts of Violence from Enemies, who for Things their own Conduct has rendered unavoidable, wreak their Vengeance even upon the innocent and de- fencelefs. The French Army, in the March they made upon the Approach of the Hanoverians, in order fo retire from this and other Places to Lunebourg, after having left every where the Traces of Plunder, Ruin, and Devaluation, and turning back afterwards towards the City of Zell, on the 13 th of this Month they began there by fetting Fire to one of the Suburbs on the Fritzen Wiefe, which was reduced to Afb.es.

On the 14th they fet Fire to the Magazines, and burnt the Boats that were upon the Allcr, as likewife the Bridge of chac River. Thefe Conflagrations have not difcontinued erer fince, and even Yefterday we faw ftefh Flames fpring up from Time to Time. Several Churches and public Buildings have been con- fumed, and a great many Perfona have loft their Lives the Occaiion. Their Malice has been r.hiefly directed againft the public Edifices, among fome of which they have burnt down the Royal Bergerie and the Orphan-Houfe. The unhappy Innocents that were in the latter had no other Way left them than to jump out of the Windows and break their Necks, or ftayand perilTi in the Flames.

Dec. 22. They write from Zell that the two Armies remain almoft in the fame PofUion, that is, the French on this Side ol theAller, and the Hanoverians on the other, but as great Quantities of Snow have fallen fince the 18th Inft. we cannot imagine how the Troops will be able to keep the Field much longer. Paris, Dec.

20. King Staniflaus, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, is much better. Ail Lorraine puts up its moft ardent Prayers to the Almighty for the Recovery of a Prince, who, tho' not born among them, is juftly elleem- ed by every one there, as the Father of the People, and indeed his Death would protre an irreparable Lois to his Subjects, for befides employing a Number of poor fons in theWorks he is carrying on at Nanci, Luneville and other Places, his Majefty maintains by his Bounty a great many indigent Families that muft otherwife perifh for Want. LONDON. Copy of a Letter from on hoard his Majeflj't Ship thiVunguardf of 74 Guns, Cap! Sivancoi, now at 6ea.

acquaints you that we failed from Plymouth the 4 7th of November, to join Sir Edward Hawke's Squa' dron, but could not meet with them. Hard Gales of Wind with Squals from the Weftward were our conftant Companions for the firft Month. The 17th at Night we loft our Maintop-maft and half the Maintop next Morning the remaining Part of the Top was fetch'd down to be repaired, and by the 19th in the Evening; we had it over the Mafthead again. Sunday the 20th ia the Morning we faw feveral Ships fleering E.S.E.at Eight we wore and bore down to them and, a-s it was fquaiiy and hazy, ran very near before we could difsover who they were But as the Weather cleared up, found it was the French Fleet, confifting of 17 Ships of War, re' turning from North America, commanded by a Vice and Rear Admiral, with a Commodore; This was in. the Latitude of Breft, 67 Leagues from the Lizard.

It being too great a Force for us, we hoifted a French Jack, and hawled clofe upon a Wind. The French are cer- tainly the moft polite People to Strangers (at firft Sight) I met with For we were obliged to pafs by the Rear of their Fleet, within Musket-fhot, and not one of them offered to fire, tho' it was in their Power to fink is. At Nine their Admiral made the Signal for a gene' ral Chace, anJffve of them foon got in our Wake, and put about, and in lefs than an Hour, their whole Fleet was in full Cry after us. The Lofs of ourMaintop- malt (three Days before) deprived us of feveral Sails, which would Have been of the greatell Service at this Juncture, and it blew fo hard in Squals, that the Crofs- jack-yard broke, the Mizentop-fail fplit, and we were in Danger of lofing our Foretop-maft. Their Rear miral, with his Divifion, led large to intercept us, if we had bore away and the Commodore kept to Wind' ward, in order to weather us.

A Quarter before one a the Afternoon, their headmoft Ship came up with us, ran under our Lee Quarter, and gave us a Broadfide. Capt. Swanton, our Commander, whofe Behavioir (during the Chace and in the Engagement) was one continued Scene of Prudence and true Courage, would not permit us to return the Compliment tii) Monfieur was within Musket-fhot. and all the Guns we could run out were brought to bear upon him.
