AM to to the foffes or defeats the EngCft expe- lien'ce at a diftance from home, they pay but little ftrention to them. There is no other way making them regard a war but in carrying it into the midft of their habitations; that is the only method of opening their eyes. OXFORD. SEPTEMBER 6. Yefterday afternnon Charles Norris, MUB.

Bac. Organift of St. John's and Chrift in this Univerfity, and well known in the 'Siafical world a3 capital finger. Mr. Norn's for fome time before his diffolution, had been affiided with an illnefs, which occafion- ally ww violent, as confiderably to obftruft him in his profeffional engagements.

At the Abbey mxiBc, fuch was his debility, that he could not hold the book from which he fung, his whole frame was agitated by tiervous tremor, and the infufficiency of his voice evidently proceeded ftom an inability to exert what in the plenitude of health was wont to enrapture and delight. Of tin's failure at the Jaft commemoration of Handel, he was perhaps finfible. Aware, too probably, that his reputation would fuffer, mould lie makfi fo unfiiccefsfiil an exit from public life, he refolvedto make one more attempt, and once more exert the full fbength of his vocal abilities. With this view he engaged him, felf at the late Birmingham.mufick meeting. On the firft day he failed, and omitted an air; but on the laft night his exertions aftonifhed, we may add, enphrenzied every one.

That Norris was great before, but never fogi eat as then, was the opinion of every one. The theatre rung with applaufe, Madame Mara was forgot, and the diftinguifhed enjofed and deferved the loudeft acclamations ef the Ajfembly. Much, however, as this fuccefs ledounded to his fame, it was, we fear, purchafed with his life. His constitution was too feeble to furvive efforts fo violent and determined, and in ten ftort days that mouth was clofed by death, which hadjuft contributed to the pleafure and approbation of a crowded houfe. As a finger, Mr.

Norris juftly held the firft place in theoratorio department. Twenty, we may fay ten ago, he was in every refpeft fuperior to what Harnfon is new; and that fuperiority in epening the Meffiah, and fome other pieces, he maintained to his laft publick appearance. To an excellent tenor voice, Mr. N. added great mufical knowlege, and a moft exquifite tafte.

As long as the Mufick Room here fubfifted, (and it was not until the winter of 1789 that it clofed) he was a conftant attendant and favourite. Much is it to regretted, that an indolence of difpofition prevented lumfrom ufing the opportunity he had of amafling 3 good fortune by the teaching of pupils. Numbers there were who reforted from the country for the benefit of his but fuch was his habitual negleft, that few returned the better for their journey. To the credit of Mr. Norris be it VCBtioned, however, that he nevtr would take saoney, which he had not juftly earned; and that il his official capacity as mafter of the cKorifters, be never failed to improve ability where he difco- wed it, by imparting a full (hare of his own admirable tafte and knowledge.

IRELAND. Sept. 2. Yefterday there was a very warm prefs on the river, in confequence, it is faid, of New orders" received on Tuefday. Lord Rawdon, who has been fome time here on a to his noble father the Earl of Moira, returns to England in a few days.

Lord Portarlington is at preftnt at his beautiful refidence of Emo park. Early yefterday morning as the Northern Mail eoach was pafung near Julianftown, this fide of Drogheda, the fore wheels by a mock were feparat- ed from the horfes finding themfelves lefs encumbered drove away at full the carriage falling, the coachman and an outfide paucngerwere thrown from their feats by the con- culfion, and confiderably confequence of this accident the mails did not arrive at the Poft- office until near nine o'clock yefterday morning. Laft Saturday Eliner Carthy was whipped thro' the principal ftreets of with remorfe at the ignominious fituatioA her bad conduit hadplundged her into, and the thoughts of fatisfy- ing the offended law in fo degrading a manner, me determined to commit the awful crime of filicide on Thurfday evening, and with her garters fuf- pended herfelf from the bed poft; but here Providence interfered; a female prifoner entering the apartment, immediately cut her down, and medical atfiftance being procured, me was with difficulty recovered. That elegant avenue to the Houfe of Commons Fofter Place, it is faid wifl be opened by the firft day of the next feffion of Parliament. On Saturday laft Mr.

Vigne, of College-green, with MefT. Afhford and Waldrea, being on a fure party.at the Water-fall, in the cdunty of Wicklow, in me vortex below the precipice, difcovered the body of a man, which with difficulty they drew out. It is fuppofed, in attempting to crofs the ftream that rolls the waters to the fall, he was fwept along the current, and plunged down the dreadful fteep that conjecture icems well founded, as the countenance was defaced by bruifes, and the body wounded in feverai parts. From his deaths he appeared to have been a farmer, and in his pockets (tied in a leather purfe,) were found four guineas and three fhilliogs in filver, which money was delivered to the keeper of Lord Powerfcourt's park, in truftforthe friends of the deceafed. ExtraS of a letter from Monaghan, July 28.

Thurfday fe'nnight the ill-fated James Clawford was executed here, agreeable to his fentence, for the atrocious and unprovoked murder of Rebecca Stuart. From bis detection to his trial, though fully feriible of his guilt, he did not behave with that contrition in which his wretched fituation demanded, but even on the fatal platform, at his laft moment, utterly denied the fact for which he was about to fuffer. The following is a of his multitudinous pi ogreffions fince the year 1759s when he voluntarily entered into the fervice of his Majefty as a marine the courfe of two years after, from his knowledge in nautical affairs, he was promoted to the flat ion of midfhipman; but had not retained the office to which he was elevated long, when he committed fome mifdemeanour, for which he was tried by a Court Martial, flogged, and difcharged. He afterwards enlifted in the 47th regiment of foot, in which he was alfo promoted to a ferjeancy in the grenadier company, and ferved throughout the American war with credit tohimfelf, andjuftice to his King; having at the peace obtained an ourable difcharge, and a grant of the Englifh pen- fion alfo. When the tumultuous commenced in London, in 1780, he took a decided part in the proceedings and when proclamations were iffu- ed out by Government for the apprehending thofe invaders of public tranquillity, he was then necef- fitated, for his own fafety, to was quiet, he engaged with General his own countryman, with whom he went abroad, and was put into a lucrative employment by the General, Ifland of Minorca.

Not content in this ftation of life, he was refolved to adventure elfe- where and notwithftanding; 'the gloomy cloud which hung over him ia England, he once more vifited it, and came again toLondon, af- fifted at a dye-houfe, conducted by. refiding in Worfhip-ftreet, Moor-fiekU, continued there until work became flack, and then" returned- to Monaghan, and lived fome years in the capacity of a forrefter to a gentleman in that county. He was at the capture of the the heat of Bunker's-Hill, and was wounded, and at laft, returned to his own country, and fell a juft victim to the violated laws, for which his crime had fo adequate a claim." FRIDAY, Sept. 13. A houfe is intended fhortly to be built on.the prefentfite of the Pigeon-houfe, which is to be fitted up as an hotel for the accommodation of perfons who may have occafion to pafs between this city and feverai parts of EHglanH'.

Friday laft, a poor weman, wife of Michael Flanagan, a miner, at cronebawne, in the county of Wicklow, was fafely delivered of four children, three girls and a boy, none of whom furvived above an hour. The crops of hay in the vicinity of this city have been exceedingly abundant this feafon, feverai farms having produced from twenty-two to twenty-five market loads the acre. ExtraS of a letter from Cork, Aug. 30. Captain Keeffe arrived this day from Oporto, who on the 14th inft.

A. M. faw the Spanifh fleet, 43 fail, 20 leagues S. of Cape Finifterre, going to the Northward, but at too great a diftance to dif- cover the number of two deckers, or flag fhips a- mongft them. Samfon Stawell, of Killbrittan, Efq.

has, at the nomination of a moft refpectable meeting of this county, agreed to ftand candidate to reprefent this county in Parliament, vacant by the death of his father-in-law, James Bernard, Efq." There is a man now felling Yorkfhirs cakes about town, who was actually banged in America, for horfe-ftaling, about 17 years ago. Pontius Pilate's night cap was fold lately by a Jew to a Chriftian antiquarian, near Piccadilly, for 70 guineas 1 (t would be much in favour of the partridges about London, as well as of -the young cocknits, were the Lords of Manors, in the vicinity of this City, to follow the laconic and determined manner of the late Earl of Abercorn, for the prefervation of his game. An Officer, who was quartered for recruiting near his Lordihip's eftate, wrote a letter, requeuing liberty to moot on his grounds. The anfwer was, Sir, not a ABERCORN." The Orleans collection of fculp- tures, Sec. (the fineft private one unquestionably in Europe) and which exerted the tafte, as well as princely fortune, of the Regent, is difpofed of in the following manner Three Englifh Noblemen were the original purchafers, at who have fince got an additional number of fevent em others, making in the whole twenty fubferibers, who are to depofit five tboufandpounds each.

The whole of the collection to be divided into twenty parcels of as nearly the fame value as poffible, and then the fubferibers to draw lots for the parcels. Dr. Burney is fetting to mufic a new cantata, which is to be performed at one of our London Theatres. The ingenious Doctor was never more lucky than in his accompanyment to the following words, which are to be fung in character by three antiquaries: 1. Asst.

Bat where fo long did linger Thefe relicks rare and 2. Ant. I filch'd the Monarch's finger, 3. Ant. 1 ftole the Poet's Thumb," We fear, that on this occafion, our wag- gifh bard alludes to the attempt made on the body of Edward III.

in Weftminfter Abbey, and to the later depredations committed at Cripplegate on the remains of the fuppofed Milton. prefent year has proved moft inaufpicious to antiquarian refearches. A falfe Hardicknutian marble, and the body of a fpurious Milton, are objects that will not fpeedily be forgotten. Extra8 of a letter from Margate, Sept. 6.

The Gentlemen who departed froitt Broad-Hairs laft Monday fe'nnight in an open boat, and have not fince been heard of, were Mr. Cowen, of Ely Place, and a friend who had been Mate of an Eaft-Indiaman, from which circutnftance alone fome hopes are cherifhed of their day after their departure feverai large and fmall boats went in fearchof them and one Gentleman, in particular, remained oat two days and one night upon that charitable From the. profeffional knowledge of Mr. Cowen's friend, it is thought not impoffible that they might have gone with the tide to perhaps to Holland; but as they have had time enough to write from either of thefe places, their not fatisfying the feelings of their friends is thought rather extraordinary. Mrs.

Cowen, with five children, is now at Broad-ftairs, where her fituation is truly affecting. The Genius of Margate, which for fome. time paft loft confiderably of its fpirit, was yefterday morning much revived by the arrival of Captain Rowe, in the Rofe in Jane', with a much larger cargo of bipeds than any which the prefent feafon has produced. From the number of Linen and Woollen- drapers, Hatters, Hofiers, Haberdajhers, and Milliners, Male and Female, in all not lefs than 200, one would be apt to fuppofe the fhops of London and Weftminfter were entirely evacuated. bince the fpring-tides have fet in, the machines advance but a fhort diftance from the Bank-fide, fo that'the ear is inceflantly offended with the unnatural ings, znAtroakings of the Cockney bathers, who feem to £onfider that fort of difcord as a ne- part of the amufement.

The high tides aHa prevent that agreeable intereourfe of which fometimes takes place when the water, isf more remote from impertinent cu- has advertifed his Benefits, and, if brie may judge from the approbation of his conduct, they cannot fail of being very productive. On Saturday a veflel arrived here from Jamaica, the mafter of which fays, that Lord Effingham's health declines daily; that while he was upon a fea excurfion, an exprefs was fent after immediately returned to Kingfton, and laid embargo oh all the fhipping, until fuch time as a convoy could be prepared for their return to The Captain adds, that in Jamaica the ut- moft exertions are making to repel any attempt that may be made by the Spaniards; and that a war is there fuppofed to be inevitable." On Monday, two ladies of high rank, fillers, went to an eminent lace-fhop, where they examined feverai pieces of lace, but returned to their carriage without purchasing any. The owner of the fhop immediately miffed a very valuable piece; he followed the coach, and overtook it at the lower end of Oxford llreet, where, after fome parley, the lace was rejlored to him. A refpect for the noble family whofe misfortune it is' to have thefe gracelefs relatives, prevented farther exposure. This lenity, it is hoped, may be a means of preventing them from exerctfing fo fcandalous and fraudulent a bias hereafter, wherein they have already been detected more than once.

In the filler kingdom, a houfe of high dif- Unction is pofleffed with the fame family failing, infomuch that fome of the female part of it were frequently detected in the fame practice, though ftill permitted to efcape. The following farcaftical Epigram, written underneath a large hand erected on the high road to direct the pafTenger to their manfion- feat, will ferve to exemplify the character Could'ft thou, great noble Lord, cora- mind Promethean fire to warm this band And, could'ft thou to this hand give feeling, Lord! what a hand 'twould bo for STIAWNG On Monday a clerk in a merchant's houfe at Limahoufe, went oft" with cafh and notes to the amount of eight hundred pounds, which he was entrufted with to carry to the bankers. He was apprehended on Tuefday morning on board a Portugaefe fhip near Bell Wharf; and on fearching, all the property was found, except five guineas. He was carried this morning to the Rotation Office, Eaft Smithfield, and committed to prifon for farther examination. On Tuefday a young gentleman, who held a very refpectable place in a Public Office, and who lodged in Berwick-ftreet, Soho, cut his throat fo defperately that he inftantly caufe of this defperate action is not nor can be even guefled at.

He was in very good circumftances, and was not noticed to be dejected before the unhappy deed was done. The inhabitants of London and fter fhould fend no goods by Common Stage Waggons, nor take any place in a Stage Coach, whofe wheels have not oil' boxes. The common mode of greafing adds to the labour of the horfes, creates delay and danger, and a general wafte of men's labour, increasing likewife expence. SHIP NEWS. DEAL, SEJTKMBER 7, 1790.
