Even the laft of his life was of publick and private Perhaps no li- teiary man ever filled a greater fpace in our world with his name, or deferyed mere from his fellow creatures. 1 His will has been opened. He has left two handfome legacies to the cities of Bofton and and the reft ofhiscftate to his daughter and grand-daughter. He has requeiltd the epitaph he compofed for himfelf fome years ago to be inferibedon his which appears, that he lived and died in the belief of the Chriftian doctrine of the 1'hree days before he (lied, he begged that his bed might be made, that he might die in a decent manner. His daughter told-him, (he hoped, he would recover, and live many years longer.

He replied, he hoped not." FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA PAPERS. ExtraS of a letter from Philadelphia.) dated the zoth of April, 1790. I informed you in my laft of the ftate of enir friend Dr. Franklin's health. From the nature of his diforder a favourable change was not to be' expected.

He had for feveral months been confined entirely to his bed with little or no relief from pain, at length nature has put a ftop to his fufferings. He died on Saturday night laft, the 17th inftant, about a quarter before eleven. The Doctor has left iflue oncjfon, Governer William Franklin, who now refides in London, and a daughter married to Mr. Richard Bachc, a merchant in this city. To the two latter he has bequeathed, it is faid, the chief part of his eft ate, during their lives, and afterwards to be divided equally amongtheir children.

He has alfo made various and donations to.cities, public bodies, and -individuals. It is underftood that he has not left-his fon (whom you know was a zealous and aftive loyalift during our late Revolution) any thing, which can be of the leaft advantage to him. To his giandfon, William Temple Franklin, Efq. we hear he leaves, a grant of fome kinds in the State of Georgia, the greateft part of his library, and all his papers, befides fome' thirg-additional in cafe of his marriage. Philadelphia, April ZO.

On Saturday night laft departed, this the 85th year of his age. Dr. Benjamin Franklin, of this city. His remains -will be interred to-morrow afternoon, at four o'clock, in Chiift Chorch burial ground. We are favoured with the following fhort Amount of DoSor illnefs, by Ms attending Phyfician.

The Stone, with which he had been afflicted for feveral years, hid for the laft twelve months' con fined him chiefly to his bed; and during the ex trem: painful paroxyfms, he was' obliged to take large doies of laudanum to mitigate flill, in the intervals of pain, he not only amufed himfelf with reading and ccnveifingchearfuily with his family and a few friends, who vifited him, but was often employed in doing bufmefs of a public as well as private nature, with various who waited on him for that purpofe; and in every in- fbmce difplayed, not only that readinefs arid difpe- fition of. doing good, which was the diftinguiih- ing characteriitic of his life, but the fulleir. and cleareft pofleflion of his mental abilities and not infrequently indulged in- thofe jfeux d'Ejpritsznd entertaining anecdotes, which were the delight of all who heard him. About fixteen days before his death, he was feized with a feverifh indifpofition, without any particular fymptoms attending it till the third or fourth day, when he complained-of a pain in his left breaft, which iucreafed till it became extremely acute, attended with a cough and laborious breatlu'ng. During this ftate when the feventy of his pains fometimes drew forth of complaint, he would he was afraid he did not bear them as lie his grateful fenfe of the many bleilings-he had received from that Supreme Being, who -had-.

raifed him, from fmall and low beginnings, to fuch high rank and confideraticn among made no doubt his prefent afflictions were kindly intended to wean him from a world, in which he was no longer to the part affigned him. In this frame of body and mind he, continued till his when his pain arid breathing entirely left and flattering themlelves with the hopes when an impofthumation, which had formed itfelf in his lungs, fudde.ily but ft, and difcharged a great quantity ot matter, which. he continued tp throw up while he had -ftrength to it, 'but, as that failed, the organs of became gradually opprefied, a calm lethargic ftate fuceeeded, and on the 17th inft. about eleven o'clock at night, he quietly expired, clofing a long and ufcful life of eighty-four years It may not be amifs to add. tp.

John of New England, to Mif .8 Hubbard, daughter-in-law to the latter, written about 35 years ago, viz. DEAR IL I condole with you, we. have loft a nioft and valuable relatiotf, hut is theiviUof God and Nature, tliatthefe mortalhodies be laid afide, when the foul is to enter into real life; 'tis rather an em- brio ftate, a preparation for living; a man is not compleatly born until he be dtad: why then fiiould we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals? a new member added their Tiappy fo- ciety We are fpirits. That bodies fliould be lent us, while they can afford us pleafure, aflift us in acquiring knowledge, or doing good to our fellow creatures, is a kind and benevolent aH of wlien they become unfit for thefe riurpofes, and afford us pain inflead of of an they become an incumbrance, atid anfwer none of the intentions for which they were given, it is equally Aind and benevolent that a way is provided by which we may get rid of them. Death is that way.

Weourfelves prudently.chttfe a partial death. In fqme cafes a mangled which cannot be reftored. We willingly cut. who plucks out a tooth, parts with it freely, fince the pain goes with it; and he that quits the whole body, parts at once with all pains, and poflibilities of pains and drfcafes it was liable to, or capable of making him fuffer. Our friend and we are invited abroad ort a party of is to laft for carriage was firft ready, and he is gone before us; we could not all conveniently ftart together, and why mould you and 1 be grieved at this, iince we are foon follow, and we know where to find them.

The King's Proclamation, caufed the moft lively emotions -in the AfiemVly. The citizens, melted and rejoiced, repeated its expreflions with enthufiafm: a thoufand eyes wished for the happinefs of feeing the beft of men and the moft upright of Kings. They enjoyed this pleafure yeilerday morning. M.

de la Fayette had fixed on Sunday, May 31, for a general review of the National Guard in the Champs de Mars. Each divifion was to provide fo many men in all fomething more than four thoufand. The King was on liorfe-back early in the morn Proud Don ftrotes his wtiflcers terrific, The poor fini'ple Indian to frighten; We'll bangfiim, in the Pacific, His pockets of Doubloons we'll lighten. That face that would fmile when my purfe was well lin'd, Shew'd a different afpect to me 5 And when I could nought hut ingratitude find, I hurried once more to the Sea. I thought it unmanly to pine at my lot, Or be chill'd with cold looks on the fhore; So I up the trifling got, And a trifle, abs! was my ftore. He was no fsoner perceived by thepeople, than the found Five le Rai (Long live the King) re- founded from all'parts with an enthufiafm before feldomfeen.

Even the nation was for a time forgotten, and wholly taken up with the thoughts of their Monarch. They ofFerred no vows but for him, and his perfon is fo much beloved, that it is con- templiited with the higheft pleafure. As his Majefty knows the hearts of his people fufficienlly to be certain that it is not his pomp, but himfelf, which a beloved by them, he was in a plain undriifs his coat was green, and. hot feemingly very new; and his hat, though fmall, was adorned with a handfome cockade of three lours. The National Guard, for the firft time, exercifed before him amongft the repeated acclamations of an immeufe crowd who were weary of the King how much they loved him, arid how truly they rejoice to fee him enjoying liberty and happinefs.

The Dutch and Flanders mails arrived on Saturday morning. By an exprefs arrived at Peterfburgh, there is an account of the Ruffians having attacked and repulfed the Swedilh General Stedingk at K'erimakey, and taken from him two pieces of cannon and a magazine, befides burning two armed galleys, and ten other boats Alfo that the Ruffian General Num- fen had the River Kymene, near lege, and after beating the Svvedifh General Hamilton, took poffefiion of their batteries, with twelve pieces of brafs cannon, and the chief part of their baggage. The Ruffians took one hundred Swedes prifoners, amongft whom are, one Colonel, one Major, and feveral other officers. 1 General Numfen, after this vicWy, took poft five German miles 011 the Swedilh frontiers.

Letters from Brunfwick mention that the Reigning Duke had.arrived there from Hal- beritadt, and intended for Berlin on the 25th ultimo. All the regiments in the environs of Halberftadt and Halle were ueady to march, but their dernier orders were not arrived. On the 25th ultimo, between ten and at night, a violent ftprm of hail fell at the ftones on an average weighed a quarter of a pound each, arid therefore did very confiderable damage. It broke the famous painted windovvofSt.John'schurchiii an irreparable manner, and damaged the church to the amount of fix thoufand florins'. There was not any news of moment either from Vienna or Prnlia arrived pn Saturday morning, but the warlike preparations are ftill continuing with increasing vigor.

The liberality of the Duke of Portland refpecling the-intended church at Marybone, does him infinite honour. A large and commodious place of worftrip for that extenfive and wealthy parifh has long been wanted, and there is new an opportunity offered for fome our good architects to fhew their abilities. It is hoped that the Managers of the fabric will permit the different architecls of this kingdom to fend in their feveral de- figns, and that the graqdliimulus to exertion, competition will be allowed. In the erecltioii of temples in- ancient Greece, conteft was always infifted upon, as well as in the making a public ftatue, or painting a public picture. Hence the arts arole' to that height of perfection amongft them, and every artift fouud the level of his merit, without any arts thofe particularly requifite to his profeffion.

It was then fufficient to be an artift only. A man of artifice had in thefe times no more chance of fuccefs than any other perfon of hisjprofeffion. The price of wheat per quarter by the laft return is 3d. lefs than on the preceding, and Hands at 2I. 17s.
