N. ExtraSl of a Letter from Hildejheim, dated Feb. 5. A Corps of Pruffian and the Troopers of Hornebonrg advanced the 2d inft. up to the Gates of Steinfield, in the Principality of Halberftadt, before any one could be informed of their March they lulled the Sentinel, and then entered the City, where they made 600 of Turpin's Regiment of French Huflars Prifoners of War, and feized all their Horfcs and Baggage.

The reft of the Garrifon retired with great Precipitation to Schlade. The Pruflian Detachment having thus happily executed this Enterprize, made the belt of their Way to berftadt, carrying along with them their Prifoners, in order to condutt them to Magdebourg but the French being reinforced, feveral Skirmifhes happened between them and the Hornebourg Troopers, in which many were flain on both Sides. The Return of the French into Schlade threw the Inhabitants into an univerfal Panic, and the chief of them fent the beft of their Effecls, and the French the greateft Part of their Provifions, to Ghrum near Wolfenbuttel. The Peafants who were to have delivered Contribu- butions of Hay and Oats efcaped hither, crying out as loud as they could that Steinfeld fwarmed with Pruffians. In fact, we are fince affured, that there are actually above 15,000 of them in the Principality of Halber- kadt, with a large Train of Artillery and Ammunition, who are advancing towards Brunfwick to drive the French out of the Country.

The French defigning to make a Camp between Gofter and Salzgitter on the River Janerfte, employ above loo Peafants in tke Neighbourhoods of Lienenbourg, Hare and Uppin. A French Officer who lodges with the of the Prince of VVjrtenberg's Regiment, in the Monaftry of Ringelheim, likes his Quarters fo well, that he turned out all the Monks, excepting a few Priefts to perform divine Service. Our Magiftrates are fo much taken up wi the Deli very of Provifions, that they have no Time to mind other AiFairs; fo that Juftice is not fo well adminiftered as heretofore." Swartwout, Son of the faid Anthony, a Youth between 13 and 14 Years of Age, who gave hisEvidence with that Caution, Clearnefs, and Regard to Truth, as furprized the whole Court.

He was preient when his Father was murdered, and was pofitive that the Prifoner comrrr'tted the Murder in company with four Indians whom the Boy knew perfeftly well, and faid that in peaceable Times they ufed to frequent his Father's Houfe, and that their Names were, John Armftrong, Cornelius Rofeboom, Peter Burnet and Tom Burnet; that the Prifoner Springer, about feven Miles from his Father's Houfe, tied his Father to a Tree, then took a Hatchet and (buck him on the Head, which did not kill him, for he afterwards talked that the Priioner then took a Sword and (tabbed his Father in veral Parts of his Body till he died after which the foner cut off his Hands and fcalped him That whilft the Father was tenured in this cruel Manner, one of his Daughters, an Infant of about five Years of Age, who was taken Prifoner, cried, upon which one of the Savages murdered her, fcalped her, and dragging her Body to a Brook near by, threw into the fame That the white Man, who killed his Father, wai painted and dreffed like an Indian but when they got over the River Delaware, both he and the Indians wafhed the Paint off their Faces, and then the Boy faid he obferved a Scar on the white Man's Cheek and the Court obferved, that the Prifoner had a Scar upon his left Cheek, much about that Place where the Boy had defcribed it. The Boy's Evidence was fo ltrengthened and corroborated by the Declaration of the Prifoner upon Oath when he firft came from among the Indians, of his pretending to be taken Prifoner at Swartwout's Houfe, and that he was in the Houfe with Swartwout when his Wife was (hot, Sec. though the Boy positively fwore, that no one was then in the Houfe but his Father, himfelf, and two of his Sifters, and that he never faw the Prifoner before heruih'd into the Houfe amongrt the Indians; and many other concurring and corroborating Circumftances, from other Witneffes, reduced Swartwout's Evidence to fuch a Certainty, that the Jury, after taking fome Time thoroughly to confider the whole, brought him in Guilty of the Murder to the Satisfaction of the Bench, and the Generality of the numerous Auditors and he received Sentence of Death, and was ordered to be executed on Friday the 4th of November.
