I II SB? 1 James Evans, recovered a Hornet fumble at the Alabama 36 and seven plays later South Carolina State scored in a 10-yard run by halfback Ernest Burgess. Dennis Bailey added the extra point. Later in the period the Bulldogs scored again on a 46-yard drive with halfback Jackie Smith smashing over from the four.

In that series sophomore quarterback Ben Samuels hit end Henry Mabry with a 19-yard pass that put the ball at the eight. The Hornets added three points early in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal by Houston Averitte but the Bulldogs refused to give in. They moved the ball to the Hornets' 16 and with fourth and 10 to go for a first down, Samuels threw a 10-yard pass to Burgess who eluded a couple of tacklers enroute to the end zone. Next week the Bulldogs, 0-2, host a strong Florida eleven. South Carolina State gave up 26 points in the first half and could not overcome the deficit as the Hornets of Alabama State defeated the Bulldogs, 29-20, in an SIAC football game Saturday night in Bulldog Stadium.

A crowd of 6,432 saw the Hornet sting the Bulldogs early in the game and, although the Bulldogs fought back in the third quarter, they never recovered. The Hornets' Robert Williams blocked a punt in the opening minutes of the game to set up the first Alabama State score. Tailback Dorsey Ross pulled down a 10-yard pass from quarterback Lloyd Ivy for the score with 12:07 remaining in the first quarter. The Hornets who possessed the ball most of the first half, put three touchdowns on the scoreboard in the second quarter and had several other opportunity to score, but the Bulldog defense held. The Bulldogs came to life in the third quarter after trail 28-0 at the half.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Sprinter Rick Lyon's 73-yard punt return set a third-quarter touchdown that broke Richmond's back Saturday night as Davidson's Wildcats opened defense of their Southern Conference football title by shocking the Spiders 14-5. The Wildcats, opening their season, scored three plays after Lyon raced to the Richmond 7, then stalled every Richmond effort at a comeback in a game in which the Spiders were supposed to avenge last year's 37-7 defeat. Davidson had indicated it came to play when it drove 64 yards in eight plays the first time it had the ball, with Mark Thompson hitting Mike Mikolay-unas with a 21-yard pass to cap the march. The Spiders' All-Southern quarterback, Charlie Richards, had a horrible night with the Wildcats picking off three of his passes.

But he deserved a better fate, for flanker Jim Live-say Richmond's usually sure handed receiver dropped three certain touchdown passes. Richmond also had an apparent 33-yard scoring pass from Richards to Livesay called back on the first play of the second quarter by an illegal procedure penalty. After Livesay dropped Richards' 6-yard pass in the end zone seven plays later, Keith ark kicked a 23-yard field goal that put the Spiders down by only 7-3. Alabama tailback Johnny Musso picked up 79 of 84 yards in the Tide's first touchdown drive of the last quarter. Musso scored himself on a six-yard scott around end. Substitute quarterback Terry Davis counted from there with less than five minues left. In the first half, both teams had touchdowns stymied by pass interceptions. Williams stopped a Florida drive at the 'Bama 17.

In the second quarter, Florida's Doug Sorenson picked off a pass and returned it to his own 28. Later, Alabama's Bill Blair snatched a pass at his own 27 and rambled all the way to the end zone. The score was called back because of a personal foul. Also in the second period, Musso hit the end zone from the 31, but that one was called back for a delay of the game penalty. (AP) -A fired up defense and Pat Sullivan's passing brought Auburn from a 10-0 deficit to a 36-23 football victory over Tennessee Saturday in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads. A rash of fumbles and interceptions plagued both teams with 13 turnovers in the first half alone. Larry Willingham, Auburn sideback, intercepted two passes within a minute in the second period and ran the first one back 52 yards to put the Tigers ahead 21-10. His second interception was the third straight of Tennessee quarterback Bobby Scott's passes.

The Vols had jumped to a 10-point margin in the first period on a one-yard sneak by 'Scott and a 26-yard field goal by George Hunt. The touchdown was set up when Kevin Milan recovered a Mickey Zofko fumble at the 26 on Auburn's first play from scrimmage. (AP) -The Citadel ended a two-game scoring drought with a 31-0 victory over East Carolina in a Southern Conference football game Saturday night. The shutout was the third this year for the Pirates. The Citadel's victory, its first of the season, came primarily on the running of junior tailback Bob Dunca, who scored on 31 and 15-yard romps and picked up 199 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Bulldog's first touchdown came on Duncan's 31-yard gallop in the first period, climaxing a 57-yard drive in which Duncan picked up 47 yards in three carries.

East Carolina fumbled on the first play after the kickoff and The Citadel's Ben Chavis raced into the end zone from 35 yards out two plays later. Chestnut, a rarely used receiver, scooped in a low pass by quarterback John Blanks, then tumbled into the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. Until Blanks' eight-yard toss to his tight end, the Guilford attack which had been so potent one week ago had bogged down against the pressure tactics of the Christian defense and Elon led 3-0. The Christians lead had come on a 21-yard field goal by Gro-ver Helsley early in the second period. That was all either team could muster until the fourth period when the Quakers pushed across the touchdown and Mike Stewart connected on a 29-yard field goal drive only 17 and 33 yards for its first scores, went 50 and 62 yards for third tallies. The first, however, was set in motion following a free kick after a bad center snap on a punt gave the Tar Heels a safety.

Mike Oglesby, McCauley's replacement, gained 76 yards and scored two touchdowns in the final period on runs of 10 and one yards. Sophomore quarterback Bob Tucker, a last-quarter substitution for Maryland, passed 20 yards to Bob Mahnic for one touchdown and scored another from the one with 45 seconds remaining as the Terps made the score more respectable.
