In the second half VMI played against Davidson substitutes for the most part but was able to score only near the end of the game. A 16-yard pass from quarterback Bern Beitzel to Rick Griffith averted a shutout. A school record was set by Terry, who kicked eight straight extra points for a total of 32 this season.

The old mark was 26, set by Terry's brother Jim in 1965. Davidson has a 6-1 overall record and the Keydets are 0-7 and 0-4. sion. Yellow Jacket defenders recovered two Duke fumbles inside their own five yard line In the first half and stopped the Blue Devils a third time on a fourth down attempt from the one. Those three occasions made the difference according to Blue Devil Coach Tom Harp.

"I thought we played well enough to win the football game, but we didn't put the ball in the end zone three times when we were close in the first half," said Harp. "Then we let them off the hook twice when we had them pinned to the goal line." "After we fell behind in the fourth quarter it was a new ball game. In that situation you are working against the clock and have to gamble." A Duke gamble late in the fourth quarter led to Tech's final touchdown. (AP) Half-back Brent Cunningham turned in a sparkling performance for the old grads in the Georgia Tech victory Duke Saturday, but Coach Bud Carson was quick to declare that it was far from a one-man show.

"Like everyone else, I'm sure, I was much impressed with his running, but he had lots of help," Carson said. "Our offensive line played its best game of the year. "Defensively we had some let downs but Duke, a good offensive team, forced many of them," said Carson. "Our defensive men came up with several really big plays when we had to have them. Without those big plays, it could have been a different ball game." As it has all season, Tech's fense kept rising to the occa FREE STICKERS Discount on $2.00 GLAZED AL'S ESSO John C.

Calhoun Dr. ATLANTA, Ga. AP) Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets stopped three Duke scoring attempts inside their own five yard line in the first half and came up with a key fourth quarter pass interception to beat the Blue Devils 20-7 in a homecoming football game Saturday. Ld by sophomore halfback Brent Cunningham, who set a new school record for rushing in a single game, Tech took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, then came from behind in the fourth to score its third victory of the season. Cunningham gained 190 yards in 33 carries to break a rushing record that had stood since 1949.

The old mark was 169 yards, held by Bobby North. Duke, who lost two fumbles inside the Tech five and failed on a fourth down attempt from the one, went ahead briefly in the fourth period when quarterback Leo Hart scored from the one. Dave Pugh kicked the extra point But the Yellow Jackets, ing before an old grad crowd of more than 41,000, roared back with a quick touchdown set up by a 53-yard run by second string halfback Kenny Bounds. Quarterback Jack Williams scored it from the one. An interception by Smylie Gebhart at the Duke 23 set up a Johnny Duncan field goal, and another interception by Jeff Ford moments later killed any chance of Duke's getting back into the ball game.

The interception by Ford, his seventh of the year, killed a Duke drive at the Tech 13. Tar Babies Defeat Imps CHAPEL HILL AP) North Carolina's consistent Tar Babies relied on the running of Billy Hite and Ike Oglesby to roll up yardage and consume time as Coach Moyer Smith's freshmen defeated Duke 25-7 Saturday.

UNC led 18-7 at halftime and denied the Blue Imps in the final two quarters to capture the school's seventh consecutive victory in the annual Cerebral Palsy Benefit Classic. Cold, rainy weather forced both teams to stick mainly to the ground and limited the attendance to an estimated 5,000. Tailback Hite scored two of Carolina's touchdowns andalong with fullback Oglesby accounted for the bulk of UNC's 299 rush, ing yards. For the Rebels it was quarterback Archie Manning on offensehe completed 23 of 36 passes for 210 yards and on defense safety Glenn Cannon, who repeatedly broke up LSU passes when the Tigers were fighting to come from behind in the fading minutes. 'Jl Montgomery, who had not played since an Oct 11 victory over Baylor, fired two touchdowns passes and tailback Bill Burnett added two touchdowns as the Razorbacks jumped off to a 28-7 halftime lead en route to their sixth victory of the season against no defeats. Arkansas, stung by the Aggies' 82-yard scoring drive with the opening kickoff, put together touchdown drives of 91 and 80 yards and then took advantage of two fumble recoveries by defensive end Bruce James to score two more touchdowns in the first half. Montgomery tossed a 10-yard pass to flanker Chuck Dicus for Arkansas' second score and then threw five yards to tight end Pat Morrison for the Razor-backs' fourth score with 2:16 left in the half. (AP) Jim Otis scored three touchdowns and became Ohio State's greatest rushing fullback, but it took a tricky quarterback, Rex Kern to crank up the top-ranked Buckeyes for a 35-6 Big Ten football victory over out-manned Northwestern Saturday. The Buckeyes, favored by five touchdowns, thundered to their' sixth triumph of the season and the 20th in a row since 1967, as Kern demoralized the Wildcats with a deft blend of passing and his own keeper sweeps. The magical OSU quarterback rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries and hit 10 of 17 passes for 117 yards before he left the the game shaken up early in the fourth period. Kern broke the game open late in the first half when he streaked 21, 15 and 12 yards on keepers and passed 15 yards to Larry Zelina in a four-play series which set up Otis' second one yard touchdown smash to move Ohio State ahead 21-0 at halftime. It took Ohio State almost the whole first quarter to break the ice.

The Bucks needed to recover a Wildcat fumble and a 27-yard pass from Kern to Bruce Jankowski to drive 57 yards for a 7-0 lead on Otis' one-yard dive with 42 seconds left in the first quarter. Kern's 21-yard touchdown pass to Jan White upped Ohio State's lead to 14-0 midway in the second quarter. Otis moved ahead of Ohio State's fullback career rushing record of 2,162 yards set by Bob Ferguson. Otis carried 25 times against Northwestern for 127 yards and a career total of 2,261. C. (AP) -Quarterback Gordon Slade, the nation's second leading passer going into the game, ran and passed Davidson to a 59-6 Southern Conference football rout of 'winless Virginia Military Institute Saturday. The victory left the Wildcats alone in first place with a 4-1 conference record to 3-1 for run-nerup Richmond. Slade completed 21 of 35 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored twice on one and 20-yard bursts.

Slade played only a few minutes in the second half after Davidson built a 52-0 halftime edge. End George Hannen scored three times. He ran a punt back 89 yards late in the second period and caught 13 and 5-yard scoring tosses from Slade. Davidson scored the first time it had the ball when Ed Terry kicked a 28-yard field goal with a little more than three minutes gone. Halfback John Zaharov ran 60 yards for the first Wildcat touchdown the next time Davidson had the ball in its 31-point first period explosion.

The second touchdown capped a 53-yard drive when Slade ran through the Keydets' line 20 yards into the end zone. From then on it was an ava Awesome Bedazzles AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Pat Sullivan's passing and a fearsome defense that pulled off nine pass interceptions gave Auburn a 38-12 football victory over Florida Saturday and sent the seventh ranked Gators home with their first loss of the season. Sullivan tossed one touchdown pass and scored twice himself on short runs, and John Riley kicked two Held goals to run up a 25-0 halftime lead impossible for the Gators to overcome despite a strong second half comeback. Auburn picked off nine Florida passes, an SEC record.

A record crowd of more than 50,000 saw the sophomore Au burn quarterback throw a second scoring pass in the final quarter. For the first 30 minutes of the game, the Auburn defenders bottled up Florida's passing wizard, John Reaves, whose 1,746 yards before the. kickoff was the best in the Southeastern Conference. Reaves found the range in the second half, completing 10 passes in a row, and finally put the Gators on the scoreboard with an eight yard looper to Tommy Durrance. But Florida was too far behindand the Tiger resistance too much to overcome.

Virginia CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) North Carolina racked up a pair of touchdowns on long runs and smothered Virginia's hopes of breaking out of a football scoring slump Saturday as it blanked the Cavaliers 12-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest Virginia now has been shut out three games in a row and hasn't managed a point in its last 14 quarters. The last time it went three games without scoring was In 1935, when it lost to Washington Lee, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. The punchless Cavaliers came closest to scoring when they got to the North Carolina 13 with 10 seconds left in the game, but the threat fizzled with two incomplete passes. Before that, they were inside the North Carolina 20 only twice.

North Carolina, squaring its conference record at 2-2 by posting its third win in seven games over-all, scored in the second and third quarters. Wingback Lewis Jolley bagged the first six-pointer. He was credited with a 40-yard run, but easily covered twice that much ground as he weaved first around and then through the Cavaliers after taking a reverse. A peel-back block by guard Ed Chalutka opened the initial path for Jolley, who got two other key blocks 'from fullback Saulis Zemaitis. Tailback Bob McCauley, who paced a strong Tar Heel running game, tallied the other touchdown on a 36-yard romp.

McCauley garnered 145 yards on 27 carries as Carolina stuck to the ground for all but 9 of its 311 yards in the game. Virginia, now 1-3 in the conference and 3-4 over-all, got 236 yards, most of it through the air. North Carolina's defense, led by end Judge Mattocks and guard Bill Richardson, held Gary Helman, the ACC's leading runner, to 28 yards and spoiled sophomore Mike Cubbage's debut as a starting quarterback. Cubbage, before being injured and leaving the game on the third play of the final period, completed 10 of 19 passes for 141 ya rds, but ouldn't lead the lywty- fa that pay-1 Ca dirt. North Carolina might have piled up a higher score in the game that was about as dull as the overcast skies, but had three of its four passes intercepted and (wo field goal attempts blocked.

Sheppard had carries of 38, 34, 72 and 32 yards in his record-breaking performance.

Mike Stewart's 40-yard field goal in the first period started the Quakers on their way to victory No. 2 this season. Senior quarterback Ray Tavalaro hit end John Dent with a six-yard TD pass and end Jeff Clark with an 11-yarder near the end of the second quarter for a 17-0 half-time lead. Newberry, behind the passing of sophomore quarterback Buddy Hargrove, moved in to score a pair of touchdowns in the last two minutes of play. Hargrove hit Howdy Hayes with a two-yard pass for the first and Jim Fulton scored the other on a one-yard run set up by a pass interference call at the one-yard line.
