A two-point pass play failed. South Carolina's other six points came on field goals of 14 and 36 yards by Tommy Bell. South Carolina got on the scoreboard on the first play of the second period on Bell's 14-yard field goal.

The Gamecocks had rolled from their 47 to the Duke four. The Blue Devils, unable to make a first down until the second quarter, ran their lead to 14-3 late in the second period when Jones scored from the one. The drive began on South Carolina's 31 after a 19-yard punt by Bobby Reynolds went off the side of his foot. Duke started a drive early in the second period from its 47 that carried to South Carolina's 36. On fourth down, David Wright attempted a 53-yard field goal, but it was far short.

BoaBs By ALDEAVER Of The Times And Democrat South Carolina State's Bulldogs and the North Carolina Aggies locked horns in a fierce defensive battle Saturday night with neither team being able to come up with a scoring combination. The game ended in a scoreless tie. The Bulldogs had three shots at field goals but all ended up wide or short. State's final field goal attempt came in the final minute of play.

Dennis Bailey's boot came with 30 seconds on the clock. It was wide to the left. Both teams committed numerous miscues with a total of eight turnovers, five by the Bulldogs and three by the Aggies. The defensive struggle netted only 15 first downs, nine by and six by the Bulldogs and proved to be a battle of kickers as the Aggies punted 12 times for a 29.5 yard average. The Bulldogs punted 11 times for a 35-yard per punt average.

The Aggies had the first scoring threat when they recovered a Bulldog fumble on the State 10. State's defensive line rose to the occasion and held, turning the ball over to the Bulldog offensive unit on the six. Neither team could mount another scoring threat for the remainder of the first half as both teams exchanged punts and fumbles. In the fourth quarter Bulldog quarterback Benjamin Samuels fumbled on his own two yard line with nine minutes left on the scoreboard clock. But the Aggies failed to take advantage of the opportunity when Al Holland fumbled for the Aggies on the next play with State recovering on the 15.

Late in the final quarter on a fourth and 10 situation on the 44, Holland fumbled a high snap from center on an attempted punt and the Bulldogs recovered on the 27. Willie Aldridge, State's big gun for the night, ran around his own left end for 15 yards to gain a first and 10 on the 11. When the Bulldogs failed to drive the ball over on the next three plays, Bailey came in to attempt his third field goal of the night. This one was from the 25. Florida Loses JACKSON, Miss.

Ellis who had a 29-yarder in the first quarter, missed on his first final quarter boot after State had driven from its 20 deep into Florida territory. However, Florida was off sides and State was guilty of holding, nullifying the play and giving Ellis another opportunity. ALDRIDGE FOR YARDAGE S.C. nerback.

Lynch ran for the two point conversion. After stalling Bucknell on the next series of downs, the Citadel scored on their first play from scrimmage, a screen pass from Lynch to flanker Champ Reiley in the left flat. Using his blockers, Reiley ran 60 yards for the winning touchdown.

The Citadel led 24-7 at half-time. Defensive back Jeff Var-nadoe returned a punt 89 yards for the squad's first touchdown and sophomore Ruff Simpson kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter. In the second period, halfback Bob Carson passed to Reiley for a 25-yard touchdown, and starting quarterback Terry Widel hit Baima for a 69-yard score. Bucknell charged out of the locker room to tally four times in the third quarter, however, as the Bucknell line forced Wiley to hurry his passes and stopped The Citadel cold. Brent Biackman, a speedy sophomore quarterback, scrambled 13 yards to a second quarter touchdown that tied the score 10-10 but from then on OSU was unable to move. The Razorbacks went ahead to stay 17-10 when Richardson zipped four yards for a score with five seconds left in the half. (AP) Joe Ferguson, Arkansas' passing whiz, surprised everyone with a 35-yard touchdown run against Oklahoma State and sparked the sixth-ranked Ra-zorbacks to a 31-10 victory over the Cowboys Saturday night. Ferguson's dash, only the fourth touchdown run of his career, gave Arkansas a 14-point lead late in the third period. His touchdown came after tailbacks Jon Richardson and Dicky Morton burned the Cowboys several times by getting outside on the triple option.
