Ironically, in last week loss to Maryland, DeVenzio had trouble stopping Howard White. The DeVenzio White matchup will be equalled in importance by the face-off between Duke's Denton and Maryland's Sparky StiU. In the first meeting between we schools, Denton collected 17 rebounds, but Still was able to hold the Duke center to only 15 points for the game.

Duke Maryland' games in College Park have almost always been thrillers. Last season, Will Hetzel's shot at the buzzer gave the Terps a 52-50 upset win over the Blue Devils. Three years before that, Bob Verga scored six points in thirty seconds to give Duke an overtime win over the Terps. The regionally televised-game at College Park will be at 2 p.m. DURHAM, N.

The Duke Blue Devils will be seeking twin goals in today's meeting with the Maryland Terrapins. Coach Bucky Waters' squad will be trying to reach the .500 plateau in the ACC for the first time and at the same time get a little revenge for last week's 88-79 loss to the Terrapins in Durham. The Blue Devils have yet to even their ACC record this season after losing to Virginia and South Carolina in the first two conference games. After edging Wake Forest on Wednesday night, the Blue Devils have a 4-5 slate. Maryland is 4.5 and 12-7 over-all.

Coach Waters was very pleased with the win over the Deacons. "It was a super game," said the Duke mentor. "And a great win for us. (AP) Billy Ries threaded his red Camaro past faster, but failing cars Friday to win the $26,000 Florida Citrus 250 for Grand American automobiles. The Shakopee, driver averaged 102.697 miles an hour on the 3.81-mile Daytona International Speedway road course before a sun-splashed crowd of 25,000. Houston veteran H.B. Bailey was on Ries' bumper with 40 miles to go, but the Firebird driver twice skidded off the pavement with steering problems and finally dropped out.

Ries, a heavy equipment oper-aior when he's not racing, won $4,800 and runnerup Wayne Andrews earned $2,550. Bailey started on the first row in the 45-car field beside leading qualifier Buck Baker, who pushed a Firebird at 107.603 miles an hour in trials. Baker was the race leader through most of the first 140 miles, but the 51-year-old Charlotte, N.C., grandfather lost his engine while running first on the 38th of 67 laps. Ries and Bailey swapped the lead once Baker was gone, but the Texan finally was eliminated and opened the road for the Grand American newcomer. Ries, 32, was rookie of the year on the United States Auto Club stock circuit in 1970 and shifted this year to NASCAR events.

Ries' pit crew got excited when it knew the 13th fastest qualifier was coming home a winner. It raised a sign that said "party time" as the Minnesota driver zipped through the final five miles. Bailey's final, car-killing mishap came after 200 miles when his faculty steering caused him to miss the turnoff into the infield portion of the road course. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. SAPPORO, Japan (AP) -The veteran George Mauduit of France won the men's giant slalom Friday and the Soviet Union finally came up empty-handed in the grab for gold medals in the International Winter Sports Week. The Soviet tide was stemmed by a virtually unknown Norwegian, Audun Nerland, who beat m't Russia's heavily favored Fedor Simachev in the 50-kilometer cross-country ski race.
