Page 4B.THE TIMES AND DEMOCRAT, Orangeburg, S.C., Thursday, March 11, 1976 AFTER MAJOR AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT TONIGHT'S TV Lindsay Wagner Is Back At Work Schedules For Thursday, March 11 Channels i JT- I want to look that way. I looked over to Michael. He was unconscious, with his head cut open. I didn't want to look that way, either. So I went back to gazing up at the tree." With the luck akin to that of the Bionic Woman, the first person to arrive on the scene was a former ambulance attendant who administered first aid.

The second was a surgeon who lived nearby; he checked for internal in juries. "We were lucky in all respects, the actress said. "My car is a '68, and the seat springs have never been replaced. Michael and I were so close to the ground that we weren't thrown out of the car. We didn't wear seat belts, either." Her head was split open but the skull wasn't fractured.

Despite the lip gash, she lost no teeth. Actor Brandon's temple injury was more serious. It required bone and plastic surgery. Filming at Universal Studios was suspended for two weeks, then Miss Wagner returned to finish episode four. After another four days off, the regular schedule resumed.

Fortunately, two weeks of Winter Olympics pre-emptions on ABC gave the series more time to catch up. Miss Wagner displays only a slight scar as evidence of the accident. Despite remaining aches and bruises, she is back at full speed in a role that ranks with Angie Dickenson's "Police Woman" as the most strenuous for a female TV star. Lindsay Wagner was enjoying a promising career in movies, especially with her role in "The Paper Chase," then elected to undertake an exhausting series. Why? "Aside from the money, which is very good, I thought it would be good for me at this stage in my career.

The contract guarantees me a movie a year, so I won't lose my hold on features. Meanwhile, I'm getting a great deal of exposure and I'm able to display my versatility. Unlike Steve Austin, (The $6 Million Man) the Bionic Woman doesn't work for the government, so she can do a lot more things." By BOB THOMAS Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) Lindsay Wagner still doesn't know how it happened. One minute she was driving her sports car on Coldwater Canyon, the next she had crashed into a tree, the car demolished. Within those seconds a multimillion-dollar television series and her own acting career hung in the balance.

A month later, she has returned to "The Bionic Woman," her wounds healed, the series and her career intact. It was the kind of happening that television networks and production companies dread. "The Bionic Woman," an offshoot of "The Six Million Dollar Man," had its premiere on ABC on Jan. 14 and proved an instant success. Only four days later, the star of the series had her accident.

"It was the most absurd experience of my life," said the actress. "There's no way I can explain it. I hadn't been drinking. I had just gotten up on a Sunday, so I was completely rested. The sun was shining and I was only going 30 miles per hour.

"What happened? Did I look away at the wrong moment? Was something wrong with the car? It was so ruined that there is no way of checking, the insurance company told me." Miss Wagner, 26, was in the midst of filming the fourth episode of "The Bionic Woman." She and boyfriend Michael Brandon had gone out to buy some groceries. They were returning when the accident happened. Her first reaction: she couldn't breathe. "I had the wind knocked out of me, and it had never happened to me before," she recalled. "I thought perhaps my ribs had punctured my lungs.

It seemed so weird; I couldn't believe it was happening tome. "Fortunately I had the presence of mind to say to myself, 'I can't breathe. What'll I do? Try the breathing exercises I learned in I started taking short breaths, and it worked. "I looked at myself in the side-view mirror. Oh, God, I had three lips.

I didn't BACK AT WORK Lindsay Wagner, who was Involved in a major automobile accident Just four days after the premiere of "The Bionic Woman," is back at work under the guidance of director Alan Crossland. She is currently working on an episode called the Bionic Beauty, and except for a slight scar and various aches and bruises, is back at full speed in a role that ranks among the most strenuous for a female TV star. Then, like a Hollywood story, it began to mushroom. And now, probably on March 18 ABC will air a spinoff that could make Les Lannom a star. Les Lannom is a slender, youthful, naive young actor from Illinois.

He did a bit part on the pilot of Harry and executive producer Jerry Thorpe liked his work. So back Lannom came, in the part of Lester Hodges, a brilliant but pesky self-styled criminologist who tries to help Harry (David Janssen). He's had two outings on the series as Lester Hodges and now they've written a spinoff called Fong and Hodges. In it, he teams with Keye Luke as Fong and everybody has high hopes for it as a series for next fall. Lannom, of course, hopes the series sells.

He calls Hodges, the character he plays, "a combination of Inspector Clouseau and Columbo, with a little of Fonzie thrown in." "Lester," says Les, whose real name is Leslie, "is the eternal eager beaver, He's read everything there is to read on criminology. He constantly throws out quotes, such as 'Leclerc refers to the banality of which makes more fun than sense." He would be a pleasant character to have around the TV set every week, a low-pressure change from all the Starskys, Hutches and S.W.A.T.U. Les Lannom comes from Johnson City, 111., the son of a coal miner, the grandson of a coal miner. In fact, Les' grandfather was killed in a mine cave-in. "For me," he says, "the choice was simple-get an education or go down in the mine So he went to Southern Illinois University, where he majored in chemical engineering.

But he really had no idea what he STEAK LES LANNOM wanted to do with his life. He went to a vocational guidance service who tested him and reported that he was best suited to the career of spying. There wasn't much market for that, so he searched for a substitute. By the time he graduated from college, he had a wife and they were expecting their first child. They moved to Chicago and struggled a few years.

Les began acting with a children's theater and going to a Second City workshop, Through a friend, he heard that there was a movie scout in Chicago, holding auditions for movie roles. Lannom showed up, got an audition andwoundup getting the part-a small but strong role as a heavy with Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman in "Prime Cut." Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a movie and it didn't do much for Lannom. It was shot in Manitoba and, afterwards, lannom went back to Chicago figuring the movie role would open some doors for him. It didn't So he decided to try his luck in Hollywood. It was Lee Marvin who helped him, introducing him to one agent who shunted him on to another and on and on until he found one agent who was willing to take him on as a client.

Then came his association with Harry and now, finally, it looks as though he has a shot at everything.
