The actress who played that part was Josette Banzet, and there's a story there. Josette is the wife of Warren Cowan, who is a partner in one of the most important Hollywood public relations firms, Rogers Cowan. Josette and Warren have been married almost three years now. She's the daughter of a French politician, and she lived in Morocco, Indochina and Paris as she grew up. Everywhere she lived, she acted.

When she was 15, she was in Morocco and, to get her away from the Moroccan revolt, her parents sent her to college in Miami, where they had cousins. "It was a country club," Josette says. "Rich, empty-headed kids. I married one of the rich, empty-headed kids." That didn't last long. She continued acting one Broadway play (it ran for one night) and then to Hollywood and a handful of movies.

She gave it all up when she began dating Cowan "I didn't want to go on location and leave him alone." She says that being married to a top public relations executive has been a great way to practice acting. "Every night," she says, "is a new play. No script, no director, but a play. I have to deal with my husband's clients and with the press. I have to play a different part every night." Now she's resuming her career.

For a while. Maybe later, she says, she'll go into politics. "I was raised to be the wife of a diplomat or maybe a president," she says. "I might like to be a congressman or a governor. Who knows?" Afel.

(Channels 2 -6 -2 5) Pick Of The Programs 11 Stout Columbia Ask Dick Kleiner HOLLYWOOD-Linda Purl is pretty, with a petite, turned-up nose, blue eyes, long blonde hair, the stamp of star on her, plenty of work, including a pilot film for a TV series. In short, your average cute starlet. Right? Not on your life Linda may look like a starlet but that would be to un derestimate a talented young woman with a most unusual background. How many actresses can say they were the only non-Oriental in a Japanese-language production in Tokyo of "The King and 17 Without doing a full research job, I'd say Linda is the only one who can make that claim.

She spent all of her formative years in Tokyo, where her father is an executive with Union Carbide. She was born in Greenwoch, but was a mere two years old when her parents went to Japan. For seven years, from the ages of 7 to 14, Linda had her own TV show in Japan's educational network. She taught English. From that she auditioned for the lead in The National Theater of Japan's production of "The Miracle Worker" and her acting career was born.

Her other credits in Japanese theater include roles in "The Chalk Garden," "Joe Egg," "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Oliver" and the aforementioned "The King and in which she played "and 1 am embarrassed to say it, Anna's son." She came to America in 1971 and found herself a stranger in her native country. "I didn't like it at first," she says. "I didn't understand my country. I found no discipline or pride or respect for teachers among my schoolmates. There seemed to be no culture or tradition.

"After I had been here for some time, I went backhometo Japan for a visit and found I really didn't belong there either. I'm not Japanese and they can't accept me as one of them. "I was just amazed at my contemporaries who spend so much time and energy trying to buck the system." In the brief years Linda has been here, she has been a regular on a soap opera, playing Doreen Post on Secret Storm. She has also been seen in episodes of Happy Days, The Waltons, Medical Center, Hawaii Five-O, Sons and Daughters, Lucas Tanner, and two TV specials, "The Oregon Trail" and "Eleanor and Franklin." She was also a regular, as Betsy the slut, on Beacon Hill. Her pilot, to be telecast on ABC-TV March 1, is The Young Pioneers.

In it she costars with Roger Kern, out of San Francisco's prestigious ACT, and they play a pair of young marrieds making their way from Iowa to the Dakota Badlands where they suffer hardships of nature as they pioneer the land. Linda is delighted that it's a series and she hopes it sells. "I love to work and I love to work with Roger. I love Arizona, where we filmed this, and I like Molly, the character I play. This girl has her feet on the ground." So does Linda-even if her feet to straddle two continents.

Sun Valley is trying to solve that problem by becoming a center for the arts, to lure film buffs up to the Idaho mountains in July and August. This coming summer, there will be a Western Film Conference in Sun Valley. The theme will be to analyze Westerns and where they're going. Already, they've lined up John Wayne, Robert Red-ford, Gene Hackman and Claire Trevor to be in attendance. They'll also have European film-makers there, to explain how the European idea of Westerns differs from ours.

Mrs. William Janss, whose family owns and operates the place, says there will be other attractions. They are planning dance and acting workshops, plus things like ceramics and photography and even a course in "Guatemalan Backstrap Loom." "The idea," Mrs. Janss says, "is to add an extra dimension to life there. Sun Valley has always just been a physical place skiing in the winter, tennis and golf and swimming in the summer.

Those same sharp-eyed viewers will probably know that House on the Prairie is based on books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. And they may wonder about that name in common. Wonder no more. TV Scout has checked it all out.

Rose Wilder Lane is the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her books, "Let the Hurricane Roar" and "Free Land," interestingly enough, were published before the Little House books. SPORTSMAN'S By TV SCOUT Best Bet-The Monday Night Movies: Young Pioneers is familiar territory, yet covered so well it is absorbing. Linda Purl and Roger Kern star in this pilot for a series as very young newlyweds traveling to the Dakota badlands to homestead. They endure lots of hardships and celebrate as many jobs.

Who does this Mr. Blackwell think he is anyway? First, Elton just happens to be of a different sex. And personally I think Elton dresses very elegantly. SUE ROWLAND, Hagerstown, Md.

Mr. Blackwell thinks he is a fashion expert, of course, and his annual list of worst-dressed women is a publicity ploy to call attention to himself. Putting Elton on this year's list was his idea of a little joke. Actually, the way Elton dresses he belongs on somebody's list. DEAR DICK: Is Clint Eastwood-married or steady dating? And when was he born? ESTHER MAE BELSEN, Prichard, Ala.

Clint and Maggie Eastwood are one of the old, established marriages in the movie world. They've been husband and wife, now, for 22 years. He was born in 1930. DEAR DICK: My favorite show right now is Ellery Queen. I really like the theme snng from that show.

Could you tell me its title and who wrote it? GORDON PREND, Stockton, Ca. I checked with the Ellery Queen people and they say the theme written by Leonard Bernstein is as yet untitled. I said why not call it "Theme From Ellery Queen" and they said that was a good idea. So maybe you helped name it. DEAR DICK The other day, my son-in-law and myself had a little discussion about who the first Tarzan was.

He maintains that Johnny Weissmuller was the first. I said Elmo Lincoln was. Which one of us is right? EDWARD F. LE COMTE, Weirton, W. Va.

You are. Lincoln played Tarzan in 1918. When Weissmuller came along, in 1932, he was the sixth actor to play the part. DEAR DICK Could you please help settle an argument inour home. My husband says Teresa Brewer and Molly Bee are one and the same.

I say they are two completely different people. Who is correct? MRS. D. BAKER, Troy, Ohio You win. Teresa and Molly are two different ladies.

DEAR DICK: On The Six Million Dollar Man, they made the Bionic Woman. Do you have any idea If they're going to marry on a future episode? ALICIA SLOAN, Pendleton, Ore. Probably not. At least, that's not in the works at the moment. Why kill the goose that laid the golden ratings? DEAR DICK: Our family enjoys watching Hawaii Five-O, Barnaby Jones, The Streets of San Francisco and Harry O.

Some of these are shown on the same day at the same time. How can we watch all of them? Don't tell us to get two TV sets; we have two TV sets and tried to watch two shows at the same time but, as the saying goes, no can do, HARRY H. GARDNER, Joplin, Mo. You have a major problem If you want to spent ,000 or so, you can get a video tape recorder, but that seems like a high price to pay to watch Barnaby Jones. Otherwise, you'll just have to watch one during the regular season, the other during re-run time, DEAR DICK: How is Big Bird, of Sesame Street, operated?
