The loss finished the Cats Carolinas Conference schedule, leaving them 1-5 in conference play and 2-6-1 overall. Newberry finished 3-3 in league action and 5-4 overall. Western Carolina received a break with only 45 seconds elapsed in the last period to score its first touchdown. Red Seay punted to the Newberry 15 where Neal Dufford received and returned to the 21 where a hard tackle by Charlie Bailey caused a fumble and Vic Kcg-ley recovered for Western Carolina. Terry Rigsby engineered the Cats score with Lew Bost hitting off tackle from the nine for the touchdown.

Van Stayton converted. Newberry took the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards in 11 plays to go ahead 17-7 with 7:30 to play. Halfback Joe Wrenn spearheaded the Indian drive. Western Carolina took over on its own 29 and drove 81 yards in 7 plays for the final score of the night. John Ruta passed for 69 yards in the drive with his 29 yard pass to Walter Swainey providing the score.

The plays, a 30-yard pass to end Bill Cronin at the Virginia and a 50-yard run by halfback Bobby Shann, came in the second period after the underdog visitors twice held Boston within their own 10. Cronin grabbed Jack Concan-non's long pass after Virginia defender John Pincavage batted it away from the intended receiver, Bob Budzinski, at the goal line. Sophomore guard Marty Di-Mezza kicked a 22-yard field TAR HEELS TOP MIAMI.

27-16 Sidle Leads Auburn Over Georgia, 14-0 ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Nationally-ranked Auburn, led by quarterback Jimmie Sidle, kept its bowl hopes alive Saturday with a 14-0 Southeastern Conference football victory over Georgia. Auburn, the No. 9 team in the nation, recorded its seventh victory against one loss as fullback Larry Rawson ran for one touchdown and Sidle passed to halfback George Rose for the other. Woody Wroodall kicked both conversions.

The loss gave Georgia a 4-4-1 season record. Middies Devils, DURHAM, N.C. (AP)-Marv-elous Roger Staubach's running and passing ignited a devastating Navy offense in the first half and the second-ranked Middies defeated Duke 38-25 Saturday in a wild-scoring regionally televised football game. The crowd of 41,000 saw Navy and Duke score a total of 56 points during the first half. The Middies, now 8-1 for the season and apparently headed for a post-season bowl game, scored every time they got the ball during the first two periods.

It was Duke's third loss against five victories and one tie. Duke threatened several times in the closing quarter but the Middies held each time and forced the Blue Devils to punt. Navy halfback John Sar raced 93 yards off tackle for a touch down in the closing minutes to seal the victory. Aggies Jolt Owls' Bowl Hopes, 13-6 HOUSTON (AP) Texas A jolted Rice University's bowl game hopes by striking for 10 second half points Saturday for a 13-6 Southwest Conference upset as student groups provided halftime fist fight entertainment. The fights in which several hundred students were involved ended in a draw as the Aggie band struck up the national anthem.

Black then took over the Tar Keydet-Virginia Tech game at Roanoke on Thanksgiving as the showdown for the Southern Conference championship. Tech upped its conference to 4-0 by defeating West Virginia while the Keydets, champions four of the last six seasons, now have a 3-0-2 conference mark. Mustangs Hang 14-7 Defeat On Razorbacks DALLAS (AP) A low pass from center on fourth down set Southern Methodist up on the Arkansas 10 yard line Saturday and the Methodists won an error-filled 14-7 victory over Arkansas. Trailing 7-6 in the third period Southern Methodist got the break when Tommy Moore, back to kick off fourth down, fumbled the low center pass and recovered but he was down on the 10. The ball went to SMU. Tom Sherwin made one yard, Mac White ran to the 1 and then went over for the touchdown. From there on Southern Methodist threatened repeatedly and was on the Arkansas 7 line as the game ended.

Billy Gannon intercepted two Arkansas passes to help keep the Razorbacks bottled up in their end of the field in the last quarter. Arkansas scored first, getting the ball on the SMU 47 when the Methodists tried an onside kick. The ball didn't travel far enough and rolled outside. Vandy, Wove Deadlock, 10-10 NEW ORLEANS (AP)-A 33- yard field goal by Toby Wilt gave Vanderbilt a 10-10 tie with Tulane Saturday and spiked the Green Wave's efforts to climb out of the Southeastern Conference cellar. In a see-saw struggle of the "have nots" Vandy marched from the Tulane 48 to the 17 in fourth quarter to set up the tying field goal.

Then, the Commodores snuffed out Tulane's desperate drives. Vanderbilt's touchdown came on a four-yard sweep by quarterback David Waller. Tulane scored a touchdown on a one-yard plunge by fullback George Smith and a 41-yard field goal by Don Bright. Tigers Nearing Ivy League Title PRINCETON, N.J. (AP; Tailback Hugh MacMillan scored two touchdowns and his understudy, Don McKay, figured in two others Saturday while pacing Princeton lo a 27-7 victory over Yale which put the Tigers within a step of the Ivy League football championship.

With a 5-1 league record and 7-1 over-all, Princeton can clinch the Ivy crown by beating Dartmouth in its final game here this week. The setback, the third for the Blues, elimi nated Yale from contention. POSSIBLE TITLE Carolinas Conference victory. The Catamount comeback fell short in the fourth quarter aft- Crush 38-25 Navy had a 31-25 halftime edge. Navy jumped off a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes by rolling 68 yards in 10 plays.

Staubach banged over right tackle from the four for the touchdown. DURHAM, N. C. (AP) "Not in my day have I seen a first half like that," Duke Coach Bill Murray said Saturday after Navy defeated his team 38-25. "I can't remember one like that first half," said Middie Coach Wayne Hardin.

The Middies scored 31 points and Duke 25 during the first two periods. Murray said in the fourth period when Duke pushed Navy deep into its own territory and kept it there behind Rod Stewart's punting, "I kept thinking we're going to get it." But he said the combination of fatigue and Navy was just too much for Blue Devils. Murray praised Duke halfback Biff Bracy for doing what he termed a "wonderful job." Bracy carried 12 times for 72 yards. Last week he netted 65 yards in seven carries against Wake Forest. Halfback Jay Wilkinson gained 70 in 13 carries and Navy Coach Hardin said, "We thought Wilkinson was the boy we had to stop.

He stKl scored one touchdown. He's a fine back." Duke came back with the kickoff and swept 65 yards in seven plays with halfback Biff Bracy going over from the three. Navy, with Staubach turning in a 44-yard run, moved into high gear again and scored on a 72-yard first period drive. Sai got the touchdown from the one to give the Middies a 14-6 lead. Duke quarterback 1 1 Glacken circled left end from the Navy five midway the sec ond quarter to cap a 70-yard scoring march.

Navy went ahead a few minutes later 17-12 when Fred Marlen kicked a 31- yard field goal. The Blue Devils roared back to score on an 11-yard pass from Glacken to end Stan Cris-son. A pass interference ruling gave Duke the ball on Navy 11. GIVE goals last week to beat Los Angeles 6-0. The Cards haven't beaten the Browns in six tries since moving to St.

Louis, but this one offers them their big opportunity. They have still another game with Cleveland to go, as well as another with New York. St. Louis back Bill Triplett missed the last game, but is expected back. A 70-year-old battery that once played for the 49ers will be wearing Giant uniforms for the clash with San Francisco.

Spartans Roll Over Irish, 12-7 EAST LANSING, Mich Spcester Sherm (AP) Lewis sprinted 85 yards for a touchdown in the fourth period and led Michigan State to a 12-7 victory over upset-minded Notre Dame Saturday. Lewis twisted through the Irish defense, aided by a key block by Mike Currie. It was the fifth run of more than 80 yards this season for the mighty little MSU co-captain. Included were two runs, two pass recep-; lions and a punt return. A crowd of 70,128 in Spartan Stadium had been smelling an upset after Notre Dame had a 7-8 lead over Michigan State going into' the final quarter.

State, now with a 6-1-1 record, is the fourth ranked team in the nation. The Spartans also lead the Big. Ten with a 4-0-1 conference mark. They played Illinois in what shapes up as a battle for league championship honors and the Rose Bowl bid at East Lansing next Saturday. It looked for a while as If Lewi? be the game goat.

Ohio Stale scored its lone touchdown its fourth in the last five games in the last 20 seconds to avert its first shutout in the last 37 games. The score came on a 31-yard pass from quarterback Don Unvcrferth to halfback Paul Warficld, and Ihc 80-yard drive for the score was aided by a 29-yard pass interference penalty. Michigan, Iowa Battle To Tie ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -Michigan and Iowa battled to a 21-21 tie Saturday in a Big Ten game that developed into a scoring duel between Michigan's Mr! Anthony and Iowa quarterback Gary Snook. Anthony scored all three Wolverine touchdowns.

Snook passed for two Ilawkeye scores unci registered another himself. i Each team missed field goals in the closing minutes. Michigan end John Henderson taught a pass from quarterback Hob Tinibcrlakc following Michigan's final touchdown for the two important extra points that assured them a tie. A similar pass had failed following Anthony's second score. The deadlock left each team with an over-all 3-3-2 record.

Michigan, 2-2-2. in the Big Ten, retained its position in the conference's first division. The llaukcycs are 2-3-1 in league play. SOMETHING'S 'GOTTA CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina topped Miami of Florida 27-16 Saturday behind a sparkling passing attack and the power running of halfback Ken Willard.

The Tar Heels, now 7-2 and boasting the nation's fourth-best pass defense, held Miami's passer George Mira in check-mainly by outscoring him. Mira threw two touchdown passes and set up a field goal by leading the Hurricanes from their 1 to the Tar Heel 22 in the third period. Tar Heel quarterbacks Junior Edge and Gary Black each threw a touchdown pass and Syracuse Stuns Richmond, 50-0 SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -Quarterback Rich King threw three touchdown passes Saturday and sparked Syracuse to a 50-0 triumph over outclassed Richmond of the Southern Conference. The Orange converted three Richmond errors into touchdowns in winning its sixth consecutive game at home.

King connected for touchdowns with pass plays that covered 67, 19 and 37 yards respectively. Richmond's Ron Smith had his passing attack throttled by hard-charging Orange linemen. Interception of two of his passes led to Syracuse touchdowns. In the final quarter, Syracuse halfback John Snider picked off a Smith pass on the Orange 10 and raced 91 yards for the victor's final score. Lions Roar Over Quakers, 33-8 NEW YORK, (AP) Archie Roberts passed for three touchdowns, ran for a fourth and boosted his career aerial yardage to 2,107 Saturday as Colum bia defeated Pennsylvania 33-8.

The agile Columbia quarterback set up the first touchdown with three consecutive passes in a 49-yard march. On the fourth pass he hit Bob Donohuc in the end zone. to Jake Adams for a touchdown. Dickie Cranwcll kicked the first of four conversions. VPI, made a touchdown in each quarter as Schweickert harassed the Mountaineers all afternoon.

He completed 13 of 16 passes for 114 yards and fattened his rushing average, best in the SC, with 43 yards in 13 carries. West Virginia's sputtering offense fizzled five times inside the Tech 20. On two occasions West Virginia had first downs inside the Tech 10, hut couldn't score. Chuck Kinder kicked a field goal from the 28 with about nine minutes gone in the second quarter for Virginia's only icore. i Pro Contests I An Auburn gamble in the sec-jond quarter resulted in the Tigers' first touchdown.

The Tigers elected to go for the touchdown after Woodall kicked a 39-yard field goal with three yards to go for a first down. Georgia was penalized five yards on the play for offsides and Auburn took the penalty, declining the field goal. Auburn's second touchdown was set up midway of the third period when Georgia faked a punt. Auburn took over on its 45 and on the next play Sidle threw a 55-yard scoring toss to Rose. Georgia's deepest penetration came late in lhe second quarter after Auburn scored its first touchdown.

Quarterback Larry Rakcstraw directed the Bulldogs to the Auburn 26 where Bill McCullough attempted a 43-yard field goal that fell short. Crucial By BOB GREEN Associated Press Sports Writer The tangle in the National Football League's Western Conference is due for an unraveling Sunday, but there's all sorts of snarls possible in the Eastern wrangle. Chicago and Green Bay, tied for the top spot in the West with 8-1 records, collide on the Bears home grounds with the winner a solid favorite to make it to the title game. The winner goes one game out in front and the loser has only four weeks to catch up. They don't play each other again, barring a playoff.

The Bears knocked off the two-time league champion Packers 10-3 on opening day, but the mighty Packers have been untouchable since, winning eight in a row. "We just didn't do anything, period," Packer Coach Vince Lombardi said of that loss, with the clear implication that things are going to be different Sun-clay afternoon. Burt Starrthe Packers' No. 1 quarterback who has been out of action for three games with a hairline fracture in his right, throwing hand will be in uniform, but Lombardi said he would go with back-up quarterback John Roach, at least for openers. Boilermakers Nip Gophers LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)-An 88-yard kickoff return by Purdue sophomore Gordon Tcter was the difference Saturday in the Boilermakers' 13-11 football victory over Minnesota. Minnesota had a statistical edge in everything but punls and fumbles. It lost the ball three times on bobbles, making 16 lost-ball fumbles in its last four games. The Gophers were left in undisputed last place in the Big Ten at 1-5.

They missed four field goal attempts in the last half after fullback Mike Reid gave them a 3-0 lead by boot ing a 33-yarder in the first quarter. Purdue got all of its points in the first period. Tcter took the kickoff after Rcid's field goal and went 88 yards lo the goal, lion DiGravio scored a second touchdown on a one-fool sneak. The key game in the Eastern Conference looms as the visit of hopeful St. Louis to Clcvlcand. The Cards are 6-3 and still very much in the running. The Browns, who have lost two of their last three, share the Eastern lead at 7-2. A Cardinal victory, plus an unlikely New York Giant loss to San Francisco, could produce a three-way tic for the top spot.

The Giants, at 7-2, have a share of the Eastern lead, while San Francisco is 2-7 in the West. Other games have Pittsburgh, 5-3-1, at, Washington, 2-7; Baltimore, 4-5, at Minnesota, Los Angeles, 2-7, at Detroit, 4-5; and Philadelphia, 2-6-1, at Dallas. 2-7. The American League also has all its games scheduled Sunday, with San Diego. 7-2, at Buffalo, 5-4-1; Kansas City, 2-6-1, at Boston, 5-5; and New York 3-5-1 uf Denver, 2-fi-l.

Oakland and Houston arc idle. The game between the Packers and Bears shapes up as a battle of defenses, with the kicking game likely to be the difference. The victory gave the Gobblers a big boost toward a possible conference championship. Both teams were undefeated in SC play. VPI pulled its wcll-rchearsed onside kick on the first play of the game. Ron Frank lined up as if to kick off to West Virginia, but instead halfback Mike Cahill kicked. He lofted the ball toward the sidelines at the West Virginia 42.

Tech's Tommy Marvin fell on it. Eight plays later Bob Schwcickcrt passed teven yardj.
