George Rogers is the biggest noise to come out of South Carolina since the South fired on Fort Sumter in 1861. But a stunning 76-yard touchdown pass from Howard quarterback Ronald Wilson to split end Tracy Singleton with just 53 seconds remaining in the first half cut the S.C. State margin to 17-7 and gave the visiting Bison momentum going into the final two quarters.

Clemson, now 2-1, scored the decisive touchdown on a 1-yard plunge by Chuck McSwain, that gave the Tigers a 17-7 lead with 11 03 to go in the game. Western Carolina, which had failed to penetrate Clemson territory in the first half, put pressure on Clemson with a 14-yard touchdown pass from David Mashburn to Gerald Harp in the third quarter, cutting the Tigers' 10-0 half time lead to 10-7. Ss Clemson began its long touchdown drive following a punt ruled dead at the Tiger 1-yard line.

Clemson quickly moved into Western Carolina territory on runs of 34 yards by Pickett and 38 yards by Crite. The drive took 14 plays to complete and used up more than five minutes on the clock. Western Carolina, now 1-3, drove deep into Clemson territory late in the fourth quarter but settled for a 40-yard field goal by Dean Viasucci to complete the game's scoring. Quarterback Tracy Schrader put the Bulldogs on the board first with an 8-yard TD run late in the opening quarter. John Thompson's PAT kick was wide left. Chattanooga bounced back on the second play of the second period, when Sam Mclver scored on a four-yard run for a 7-6 lead. The Citadel, on a 20-yard run by Wilford Alston and a 28-yard field goal- by Thompson, took a 15-7 halftime lead.

Mike Smith scored the Moccasins' last touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard CHARLESTON, S.C. Tailback Stump Mitchell rolled up 170 yards and scored two touchdowns as The Citadel shocked Tennessee-Chattanooga 29-13 in a Southern Conference football game Saturday night. The loss halted a three-game winning, streak by UT-Chattanooga, 3-1. Mitchell, the conference's leading rusher, scored on runs of five and 19 yards in the second half to propel The Citadel, 2-2, to Its first league victory of the season. The senior Bulldog tailback is Just 24 yards short of 3,000 career yards.
