Ia uoiei there should iiieas while a reapportionmeEt, which is very improbable, it will be 414, with A Lew--5ary for an election. Thus it will fceca that the Uepublican will Inck 2H votsfor bis election, while the Dcutccratk candidate will be 2 votes flort.

The r-al contest, therefore, will be in the doubtful States. If the liepuidican candidate should carry Xew York he c-'iuld lose all the other doubtful and yet be elected, for thirty-six New York votes added to HOenre Itefablkan votes would make 215, or dght more than are needed for election. Without New York, Itepub-Jieaos caa win by carrying Indiana, fifteen votes; California, eight votes, and West Virginia, six votes, making twenty-nine votes, which, added to W), make 2J; or by xrrlng Connecticut and Indiana, with the same or, further, by carrying: California, lihode Island. Montana and Indiana, making ia all 210 votes. Without New York, Republicans can win, with Indiana and two or three other doubtful fctates.

But they can not lows both New York and Indiana and then win. The Democratic candidate starts out with 150 sure votes. If he should carry In addition New York, 31 votes; Indiana 15; Connecticut or West Virginia, 6 in all 213 he would be elected. Or If he should carry New York, Indiana and lihode Island these would be sufficient. Or, without Indiana, If the Democrats carry New York, West Virginia.

Connecticut and Rhode Island; or New York, Connecticut, California and Montana, they will elect the next President of the United States. From this it is evident that New York Is absolutely necessary to Demo cratic success and that without it the Democratic control will end In inevita ble and hopeless defeat. Hut 'Democrats are naturally sanguine of party success in New York, and, when fac tional strifes and disastrous feuds have not prevailed, their hopefuluesi seems justified by their past experience. With New York and two or three of the doubtful States tl is success is sure. We have thus endeavored to set forth clearly the conditions and chances of the great political game of 12.
