HOME FURNISHINGS 650 GRAND AVE. -AT MacARTHUR TE 4-6700 NAZARETH TO CALVARY- 1 Gakland a 02 Tribune Monday, April 16,1962 19 Path of the Savior By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer. NAZARETH, Israel- A jagged shaft of lightning against the black proscenium of the clouds. A moment's silence.

Then the thunder crashed, cascading through the chasms of the mountains. This is Galilee, untamed, rock-ribbed, precipitous, hotbed of ancient insurrections, homeland of the Nazarene. To the south across the plain of Esdraelon, the rain came down in sheets of gray. Yet. westward, sunlight stabbed the ranging plateaus of Carmel.

This place is full of moods, of sudden change, of peaks and valleys, storm and sun. And here is where the carpenter of Nazareth began His work that led Him through the depth of night and back again into a pinnacle of light. He walked these limestone slopes where ragged shepherd boys still tend their flocks today. He chopped down cypress in these groves to carve as yokes and wooden plows. And here He taught, "The truth will make you free." ROAMING IN ISRAEL My wife, Jo Ann, and I went roaming for a week in Israel, its towns and fields, its modern methods overlaying old, its shops, kibbutzim, ancient sites, its finds in archeology, the ruins of Pilate's garrison, Caesarea, beside the Mediterranean Sea.

And chiefly rockbound Galilee, the storied land of Jesus. Here in Nazareth, where He lived for 30 years, a church and synagogue still stand along a market lane, supposedly where He first told His role to men. Outside the hawkers cry and barefoot women For 30 years, He lived in Nazareth and it was here that He first revealed His role to man. The sacred associations cluster thickly about today's Nazareth. A reporter records his impressions of the land of Galilee in this first of five Easter articles on his pilgrimage to Christianity's holiest places.

The town is mostly Arab. Rustic, wary little world. Persistent hucksters, selling trinkets, hang about the stonehewn dwelling: Mary's and other sites in memory of. Jesus. Just a mile from here a bluff provides a chilling drop from which a mob once sought to hurl Him.

Something stopped them, though-some devastating word or act or look. Out among the scattered towns, in brushy draws and cliffside caves, the fiery Maccabees first challenged heathen depostism. Their proud but tattered little crew, the first to use guerrilla tactics, routed mighty Syria. A WANTED MAN Here, too, the later Roman rulers sent their mounted legions to suppress the ardent, free and roughhewn Galileans. Calif.

Anti-Red Measure Meets Strong Opposition SACRAMENTO-IN-A posed anti-Communist amendment to the state constitution has run into stiff opposition. The proposal, contained in an initiative petition, is sponsored by Assemblyman Louis is Francis, R-San Mateo, who is seeking support to place it before voters on the November ballot. It would empower county grand juries and federal and state agencies to label organizations as subversive. The petition is being circulated by the California Committee to Combat Communism. The California Conference of Machinists, which ended a four meeting here Sunday, declared in a resolution that it was "unalterably opposed" Snow Storm in Italy ROME-4-Northern Italy dug itself out of a winter-like storm today that piled snows high and brought death to two workmen.

The resolution said the petition gives the power to "convict by accusation" and such authority would undermine "justice and liberty." Meantime, John Busterud of San Francisco, Republican Assembly caucus chairman said in a radio broadcast in Berkeley Sunday night that he too was opposed to the proposed amendment.

Busterud, seeking his party's nomination for the post of state treasurer, said, "I think we have adequate laws in California now to deal with the Communist problem." RUGS DIRTY? Prof. Wins Award Also, here, the Nazarene became a wanted man. "The Son of Man," He told his men, "will be delivered to the hands of men, and they will kill Him." Going east and north, the pink-white lime that rings the layered summits yields to swarthy rims of lava rock. Abandoned antique dwellings lay in tumbled ruins.

Inhabitants are fewer here than in the olden days. The valley plots have been combined into communal farms. The sun broke through, just moments later, turning that already gorgeous blue into a' giant, dancing sapphire, cradied by the circling sentries of the hills. The rocks beside the lake are black basalt. They stretch today by almost vacant, lifeless shores.

Yet in the breezes from that sea you hear the teeming whispers of the past, the echoes of a steady voice, steady even when the gales whip out abruptly from the mountain gorges, lashing pla.cid. waters into six waves. "Peace, be still! Be not afraid. Have you no faith?" Not far away, a gentle mountain rises by the sea, its crown a bunch of evergreens, alive with songs of birds. And here, tradition says, to hundreds gathered on that broad incline, the Nazarene delivered his immortal sermon.

"Blessed are the poor the meek. the merciful Judge not, and you shall not be judged forgive and you shall be forgiven." I said, "Let's go."
