State 4C The Journal Times Wednesday, February 7, 2001 page editor: Heather Gascoigne Waukesha family files claim in E. coli outbreak at elementary school bills and $10,000 for pain and suffering, Waukesha School District records show. The child was hospitalized Oct. 24 after testing positive for E. coli.

She was released from the hospital Oct. 30. The child was one of 26 Bethesda Elementary School students who showed symptoms of E. coli bacteria infections. Four were hospitalized.

Health officials believe the students were infected when they ate lunch in the school cafeteria between Oct. 16 and Oct. 19. The outbreak likely was caused when a sick child handled food other students ate, officials said. District Business Director Bob Bucholtz said the claim has been sent to the district's insurance company, Wausau Insurance.

The company will notify the district if it intends to pay the claim, Bucholtz said. DARREN HAUCK Associated Press Darrell Bazzell, newly appointed secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, speaks to the media Tuesday as Gov. Served as DNR deputy secretary since 1996 and administrator of the DNR Office of Planning and Analysis, 1993 to 1996 College: Graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison Personal: Milwaukee native, graduate of Milwaukee' North Division High School MILWAUKEE Gov.

Scott McCallum named Department of Natural Resources Deputy Secretary Darrell Bazzell to head the agency Tuesday, replacing George Meyer, who has held the post since 1993. Bazzell, 42, becomes the highest-ranking black in the cabinet in Wisconsin history, McCallum said. He has served under Meyer since 1996. "This person has impeccable credentials," McCallum said of Bazzell. McCallum declined to say specifically why he replaced Meyer.

He said he wanted someone with experience in creating budgets and he was looking to the future "It's part of government. Transitions will occur," McCallum said. The state Senate must confirm Bazzell's appointment. He takes office immediately and can work without confirmation, said Frank Fennessy, executive assistant to the secretary. Several secretaries have worked their entire tenures without a confirmation vote, he said.

Meyer declined to comment on McCallum's decision when reached by The Associated Press. He said he planned a news conference today to discuss his reaction. But he said he would stay on at the DNR if possible, as long as he could agree to a salary with the department. "(Bazzell's) working with the personnel people, and I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out," Meyer said. McCallum also reappointed Richard "Moose" Speros as Department of Tourism secretary and Jane Hojan-Clark as executive secretary of the state Higher Education Aids Board.

DM0 Speros has been in office since 1995. Hojan-Clark has been in office since 1999. The appointments were McCallum's first since he took office last week when Tommy Thompson resigned to become secretary of the federal Health and Human Services Department. McCallum announced the appointments at North Division High School, Bazzell's alma mater. As.

nearly three dozen students looked on, Bazzell said he would focus on protecting the state's wetlands and introducing inner-city children to the outdoors, but declined to elaborate. He said he has started hunting and fishing since he moved from Milwaukee, where he grew up, to McFarland, just outside Madison. He has grown attached to the outdoors, he said. "It's something I never had," he said. McCallum's choice of Bazzell to head the DNR marks the biggest change in cabinet secretaries so far.
