Fashion Hosiery rediscovered BY MARY GOTTSCHALK Knight Ridder Newspapers "The dress-up leg is back," declares Irenka Jakubiak, editor of Accessories magazine. "Hosiery is making a strong statement for fall." Hosiery has been battered for the past decade with steadily declining sales as a result of several factors.

The first punches came from the increasing acceptance of casual dress in the office, resulting in women trading suits and dresses for pants. Then designers started sending models down their runways with bare legs. Finally, there was the rising popularity of mules, sandals and open-toe heels. Yet, the fashion pendulum is swinging back, as top designers have rediscovered hosiery. Jakubiak attributes the vogue to the resurgence of suit dressing this fall and, most important, the fact that "accessories are hot again Women are starting to wear more jewelry, flower pins; they're buying more handbags and wearing belts again.

It flows down the body, so they're looking at colorful and textured hose on the leg." Women who think of hosiery as either sheer or basic black opaques need to rethink that approach. "For fall, the leg is all about texture, color and print and pattern," Jakubiak says. "We're seeing a lot of colors we haven't seen before, like eggplant, rust and shades of mustard." Jakubiak suggests women "start off with an easy, subtle statement. Try colored tights. A burgundy or deep eggplant looks beautiful with gray, black, brown or navy When it comes to texture, the leader is fishnet, she says.

For novices, "think about layering fishnet over a color. A strong statement would be black fishnet over red, but you can also try black fishnet over brown or even a black fishnet over a black tight, which will give you texture.".
