The Philadelphia-born actress will be back on The WB this fall as the star of "Like Family," a sitcom with a 1 multiracial cast that the network has scheduled between "Reba" and "Grounded for Life" on Friday nights. In other words, unlike Peete's previous WB show, "For Your Love," which also had both African-American and white stars at its center, "Like Family's" not expected to be part of a night entirely devoted to black-oriented comedies. "It's a godsend" that The WB is changing its approach, Peete said recently in Hollywood.

"My mom (Dolores Robinson, a talent agent) and I used to hound them, 'Why are we segregating television? Why are we on one And they got it, and it feels really good," she said. The actress, who's married to Carolina Panthers quarterback Rodney Peete and who gave birth to their third child a year ago, said she turned down other roles before taking the lead in "Like Family," in which she plays Tanya, a married mother of two who opens her home to her best friend, Maddie (Diane Farr), to help the single mother raise her teenage son. "There were a couple of other shows, but I felt like this one was the best fit for me," she said. The others "were not multi-ethnic, and I was going to play somebody's wife, some stand-up's wife or something like that and I didn't want to do that," she said. Which doesn't mean she won't have something in common with other sitcom wives.

Told that her character is part of the "King of Queens" trend slim, attractive women married to overweight men she laughed. "Yes, yes, that's true," she said.
