This time the lake almost caught him. Rochon, 41, of 6913 Cliffside Drive, spent a harrowing 40 minutes in 46-degree water with the line from a 35-pound anchor wrapped around his leg after a wave flipped his 14-foot boat. Lifejackets, a passing boat and a little luck prevented a tragedy. Rochon and two passengers, Ernest Burris, 61, of Taylor Springs, 111.

and Robert Hancock 13, of Hills-boro, 111., were tossed into the water about 6:30 a.m. about a mile from shore and south of the beacon for the Racine reef, Rochon said. The three were rescued about 7:10 a.m. when Burris' orange coveralls were spotted by a charter boat operated by Marv Wiesneth of Sundown Charter Service. There were gruff jokes as family members talked about the accident Sunday evening.

The lake was quiet when they started out about 5 a.m., Rochon said. Burris, the uncle of Rochon's wife, Frances, and Hancock, who is Burris' grandson, were visiting for the holiday weekend. Rochon said they were fishing with downriggers when two lines got caught. Garland Rochon Ernest Bum's Robert Hancock They managed to free one line when waves suddenly kicked up, he said, and they cut the second line. It tangled in the propeller.

"One wave came over (the boat) and we went over," Rochon said. "I've been out there a lot and I'm real careful about lhat stuff. This sucker came up out of nowhere. It just caught me down," he said. There were no boats nearby.

AH three were wearing lifejackets, and that probably saved their lives. Rochon said. (Turn to RESCUE. Page 2A) (JR) Cloudy, chilly details Quakes jar coasts 4. I 2 page 2A Landon breaks hip T0PEKA, Kan.

(AP) Former Republican presidential nominee Alf M. Landon was resting comfortably Sunday in a Topeka hospital after breaking his right hip in a fall at his home, his doctor said. Landon, 95, was in satisfactory condition and scheduled to have surgery at 9 a m. today to have two or three pins placed in the hip, said Dr. John Crary.

Crary said he expected no problems with the operation. Landon's vital signs were good, Crary added. Landon's wife, Theo, said her husband had opened the front door of their home to watch a thunderstorm, and then he thought he heard her call him. He slipped as he turned away from the door, she said. Landon was the GOP presidential nominee in 1936 but was defeated by Franklin D.
