Fluoride is one of the single most important variables that affect the health of your baby's teeth.

Between the ages of birth and twelve years old, fluoride is incorporated into the structure of teeth and can prevent a lot of decay. From birth to two years old, most babies don't drink much water, and your dentist or pediatrician may supplement baby with fluoride drops. If your family drinks bottled water, make sure that the fluoride level is between 0.7 and 1 .2 p.p.m. It should say right on the label. If you have a water purifier, check with the manufacturer to see if it removes the fluoride ion.

Don't Forget The What are dental sealantsf Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings, which are applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth to prevent decay. Most tooth decay in children and adolescents occurs on the chewing surfaces of these back teeth or molars. This is because molars have irregular surfaces with pits and grooves which tends to trap food and bacterial debris. Sealants flow into and coat these pits and grooves so that bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay. The teeth most likely to benefit from sealant application are the first and second molars just after they have erupted and before they have had a chance to decay.

First molars generally appear at about six years of age and second molars at about twelve years of age. Once a tooth has matured, it is less prone to decay. Children between the ages of five and fourteen benefit most from sealants. Adults that are cavity prone may also benefit from sealants. After an examination by your dentist it can be determined which teeth can be sealed.

By sealing them now, we can prevent the more costly procedure of filling the tooth later. And most importantly, sealants are fun there are no shots or drilling involved! And they're as easy as painting your fingernails. Information provided by Racine Dental Croup, S.C. Prostate Cancer In affiliation with the Medical College of Wisconsin The Family Practice Center 1320 Wisconsin Avenue A part of All Saints Healthcare System, Inc. Prostate Cancer is now the most common cancer in men.

In 1998, it is estimated 180,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and about 35,000 died of prostate cancer. One out of six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. In it's early stage prostate cancer is often asymptomatic. Due to the development of Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), greater awareness by the public because of available information about prostate cancer, and more regular checkups by men at risk, most men are diagnosed at an earlier state when prostate cancer is potentially curable. PSA is an enzyme made by the prostate.

Some of it leaks into the blood and can be measured with a simple blood test. If it's found to be increased, cancer may be present and further evaluation is needed. The symptoms of prostate cancer are nonspecific, and may include difficulty voiding, blood in trie urine, back pain, or weight loss. Since these symptoms more commonly occur in other conditions, the PSA provides a better way to diagnose prostate cancer early. Some cancers may have a normal PSA and are diagnosed by a digital rectal exam of the prostate.

If the PSA or digital prostate exam are abnormal, then the next step is an ultrasound biopsy of the prostate, which can usually be done as an outpatient without anesthetic, by a urologist. If the biopsy shows cancer, the urologist will then decide if other tests are necessary to evaluate the extent of the disease. The American Urological Association and American Cancer Society now recommend that all men over 50 have a yearly PSA and digital exam of the prostate each year to screen for prostate cancer. If a man has close relatives (father or brothers) with a history of prostate cancer or is black, then checkups should begin at age 40 because of an increased risk. Novsam, M.D. 6308 8th Avenue, Suite 503 Kenosha, WI 53143 (414)656-8213 Local Doctor Weighs In On The Lastest Breakthroughs In The Fight Against Breast Cancer Each year, more than 180,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease claims 44,000 lives each year. One of the facts that these statistics demonstrate is that the majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer are survivors. There have been many exciting breakthroughs in the fight against breast cancer.

This includes a recent study released by the National Cancer Institute reporting that the drug tamoxifen cut cancer rates by nearly half among women who were considered at risk of getting the disease because of family history, precancerous breast lesions or their age. In effect, the drug sneaks into the estrogen receptors of breast cancer cells, locks up the cells and prevents them from growing. While this is certainly exciting news for women at a high risk of breast cancer, ifs not a wonder drug and shouldn't be taken by healthy women. Tamoxifen is not proven to prevent breast cancer and does pose certain, serious risks. More clinical research is currently underway.

Another experimental drug getting the attention of cancer doctors and patients across the county is herceptin. The drug uses antibodies to disrupt a common type of breast tumor in certain women. A genetic mutation is responsible for the cells that herceptin has been successful in combating, so only women with breast cancer and the mutation are involved in the clinical trials. These new drugs may only be useful to women at a high risk of breast cancer, or those who have already been diagnosed, Despite these important findings about tamoxifen and herceptin, they are not an option for healthy women. The most important option for all women is early detection through monthly self breast exams and mammograms.

It is recommended that women over the age of 40 have a mammogram every year. Early detection, is the most important tool available in the fight against breast cancer. Information provided by Dr. Malik Bandealy, Oncology of Wisconsin, S.C. Findings that were released in the prestigious Neurological Research from a study involving 778 patients in 21 medical centers throughout the Onited States proved that vertebral Axial Decompression (VAX-D) is an effective treatment to relieve many of the problems which cause chronic low back pain.

Patients included in this study were diagnosed with having a herniated disc, or facet syndrome, which were confirmed through diagnostic imaging. All patients received at least 10 sessions of VAX-D treatments. These patients were askedto give assessments of their own pin, mobility and ability to carry out usual activities of daily living, prior to and then following VAX-D therapy. Based on the fact that "success" of the treatment was defined as a reduction of pain to 0 or 1, on a 0 (no pain) to 5 (severe pain) scale, the treatment was successful in 71 of the 778 patients. VAX-D decompresses the lumbar portion of the back, through an automated logic control mechanism.

This causes a dramatic decrease in the amount of pressure on the spinal nerves. It literally "pulls" the disc back into place, and takes the pressure off the nerve root. Patients are placed in a harness, which focuses the pressure on the lumbar portion of the back, and they lie on a table, which operates in two phases. For one minute the table slowly seprates with a specific amount of pressure applied and the vertebrae are decompressed, for the following 60 seconds, a rest takes place, where the table is pulled back together and pressure is diminished.
