COLONEL BOTKIN DEAD. Former Lieutenant Governor of Mon- tana Dies in New York. Washington, Nov. Alexander C. Botkin, chairman of the commission to revise the criminal laws of the United States, died at ten minutes to one o'clock today.

He was at his desk one week ago last Friday evening for the last time. He was taken seriously ill Sunday night and has been gradually sinking from that time. He was removed to the University hospital this morning for special treatment which it was hoped might give relief. He died while being prepared for the operation. (The end came peacefully and he was conscious to the last.

Mrs. Botkin was with him when he died. Senator Carter had been in the room a short time previous and will take charge of the funeral arrangements. Miss Clarie Botkin is in the city but was not at the hospital when Judge Botkin died. Alexander C.

Botkin was born in Madison, Wisconsin, October 13, 1842. His parents, Alexander and Jane Sinclair Botkin, were natives of Kentucky and Scotland, respectively. Receiving his elementary education in the public schools of Wisconsin and graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1859 Mr. Botkin attended the law department of the Univer'sty of Albany, N. and graduated therefrom in 1866.

From 1868 to 1878 Mr. Botkin was engaged in journalism on the Chicago Times and Milwaukee Sentinel, and in 1878 he was appointed by President Hayes as United States Marshal for Montana, becoming a resident of the territory in that year. He was commissioned in 1882 and the same yeaf was the nominee of the republican party for delegate in congress, but was defeated by the democratic candidate, Major Martin Maginnis. Upon retirement from his federal office in 1885, Mr. Botkin entered upon the practice of law in Helena, his partner being the late Theodore Shedd.

From 1887 to 1890 Mr. Botkin served the city of Helena as city attorney. In 1892 Mr. Botkin was the candidate of his party for lieutenant governor. He was elected and served four years.

He received the republican nomination for the governorship at the close of his term but was defeated. The Hot Blast Down-Draft consumes every particle of burnable material in the wood so that when the fire has burned out only a very small quantity of fine particles remains in the stove to represent the impurities in the fuel, which would not ignite.

A piece of few chips and a stick of wood will enable you to have a roaring fire in ten minutes, which may be maintained 36 hours. Owing to tne scientific construction, the Down-Draft burns all the fuel, the Wilson saves one-half your fuel bill. This commission has practically concluded its work, and the report of the body is to be submitted during the coming session of congress. In 1872 Mr. Botkin married Miss Harriet E.

Botkin was marked with signal success. Throughout the state he was widely known, and had drawn to him during his years of residence in Montana a very large number of devotee friends. In the political affairs of the state he always manifested a lively interest and wielded great influence. Professionally he stood high among the members of the bar, being recognized as an authority on abstruse questions involving the exact knowledge of the intricacies of practice. THE FADED GARDEN.

There is some chemistry in the atmosphere of Montana which embalms the verdure which it kills. In your flower garden the pansy stands a froxen emblem of the disfranchised royalty of sorrow. There is among the leaves the trees a metallic, muffled clangor like the sound of kettle drums above the grave of a gallant soldier. Summer is dead, but Nature is frozen. The leaves are green in death.

There is no other place in the world where the elements so conspire to cheat the senses. Winter came a few days ago, but the glamour of summer lingers upon the dead cheek of Nature. In other latitudes the rose leaf pales and becomes anaemic in the gradual breath of the destroyer. Here the frost seizes and crystalizes the rose and the sweet pea bloom, and the radiance of them mocks us from behind the brittle window of the ice. You see a luminous chrysanthemum.

You pluck a heap of chrome ashes and the perfume of it is as the odor of a dusty and deserted house. The frozen gardens of Montana are like the dead children of whom we mourn with joy for the deliverence from the harshness and the bitterness of the winter of maturity. The destiny of the rose, dead in all the brilliancy of its youth, is symbollic of the virgin cered in wedding splendor. It is young "Juliet in the tomb, love beautiful and bale in death, yet suggestive of the glory and ease of young possession of peace which age cankers and vice Independent. Lewistown Hide Fur Co.
