'Peanut Andy' Hoffman Dies at 86 Funeral services will be held Monday for Martin M. "Peanut Andy" Hoffman, retired Oakland candy manufacturer who died yesterday.
He was 86. Mr. Hoffman was affectionately known as "Peanut Andy" because of the trademark for his candy, a debonair little character fashioned from chunks of the peanut studded confection. From the early 20s until 1937 a large electric sign of the Peanut Andy trademark standing on Webster St. near 14th St.
delighted children. Mr. Hoffman retired from the candy business in 1946 after more than 50 years of highly successful operations. Born at Point Arena, he had lived most of his life in land and had been active in the city's civic affairs for many decades. He had been a member of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce.

The pact, signed yesterday by the union and five major aluminum companies, does not provide for any wage increase. However, it makes improvements in vacations, pensions and supplemental benefits.
The prestige and dignity of an Albert Brown Service costs no more. ALBERT DROWN FUNERAL OLympic, 3476 PIEDMONT ATTRUE OAMANO The traditional summer vacation may be on the way out in the state's colleges. A change in college terms was taken under study yesterday by the state's Coordinating Council of Higher Education in Sacramento. Clark Kerr, president of the University of California, told the council of the decision last week by university regents to shift over to three full sessions each year, beginning in the fall of 1964. State College Chancellor Glenn S.
Dumke said the colleges have been studying the need for year-around use of buildings, and welcome the university's action. He indicated the state colleges will follow suit and switch to the so-called trimester system, under which the fall term would begin about Sept. 1, the winter term after New Year's Day and the summer term in May. Both Kerr and Dumke said the shift wouldn't save as much money as some people think because new teachers would have to be added. They noted that it would be a mistake to assume that facilities aren't already used in the summer.
Berkeley's summer session now has an enrollment of 10,000, Kerr said, about half the regular session enrollment. Junior college spokesmen said there are obstacles to converting their institutions to the new system, such as many courses becoming uneconomical when held over three semesters because of the small enrollment that would result. Yet in the long run, it was agreed, the change will probably be made eventually throughout the state's higher education system. Ship Movements ARRIVED IN S.F. BAY YESTERDAY IDAHO STANDARD, San Pedro.
