2 PASCO WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2012 A SECTION OF THE TAMPA TRIBUNE TBO.com School calendar and events Forums scheduled to debate 4-day school week replacement therapy, with up to four weeks of free NRT products available to participants. Parents can give opinions on cost-saving proposal BY RONNIE BLAIR The Pasco Tribune land a LAKES The Pasco County school district plans three public forums next month where parents and others can express their views on a possible four-day school week. The forums will be Feb. 9 at Pasco Middle School in Dade City, Feb. 15 at Rushe Middle School in Land 0' Lakes and Feb.

16 River Ridge High School's performing arts center in New Port Richey. All three forums will start at 6:30 p.m. A task force began researching the four-day school week in September after school board member Steve Luikart suggested the idea as a potential cost-saving measure during last year's school-budget discussions. At the time, the board was trying to cut spending to deal with a $54 million revenue shortfall for 2011-12. Superintendent Heather Fiorentino has already predicted that the school district could have a shortfall of at least $21 million for 2012-13.

State law dictates how much time students must spend in school, so any class time lost from dropped day would have to be added to the remaining four days. Any money savings is expected to come. from transportation and utilities. The task force which includes parents, teachers, principals, bus drivers, custodians and district-level supervisors is charged solely with gathering data and presenting the results to the school board. The group will not make a recommendation to the board.

Trezza said if a building was chosen it would be built to the west of the existing structure and if 6,000 square feet was the choice it would be an L-shaped structure nestling up to the existing library on its west and north sides. Either choice would preserve the existing butterfly garden on the library property.

Anything that is designed will attempt to blend in with the architecture of the existing buildings in the neighborhood and will be the product of ideas generated in public focus meetings. Vicki Elkins, library director, told city council members that Harvard Jolly was the library board's choice because of the number of libraries it has designed. A portfolio listing some of the firm's projects shows it has designed libraries in Clearwater, Plant City, New Tampa and St. Petersburg.

One of the founders, William B. Harvard was the designer of the "upside-down pyramid" St. Peters-burgPier.
