GLADYS H. MURPHY, City Clerk No. 548-Feb. his name, "father of Oakland parks," and the builder of the 12th Street Dam which created Lake Merritt. The Jackson Street house stands in the shadow of modern apartment houses, its frills, bay front porch and cone peak reminders of the horse and buggy era of its youth.

The last of the oldtime fashionable houses in its block, the structure will be demolished to make way for a threestory, 32- unit apartment building. The house was purchased from Dr. Merritt in 1880 for $12,050 by John Stanley, a San Francisco attorney, as a wedding gift for his daughter Catherine and her husband, grocer Thomas Coghill. The property alone is valued now at about $70,000, according to Burt Pearce of Pearce Development the firm which will erect a half million dollar building on the site. The lot is part of a 45-acre parcel which Dr.

Merritt bought for $4,500 in 1852. The Coghill family lived in the house until 1920 when it was sold to John C. Money, a pioneer Napa County contractor credited with being the first man in the West to build an automobile. Money died in 1944 at the age of 89. Pearce said the house was bought from Money's heirs.

In later years it has served as a rooming house, its 19th century facade marred by 20th century fire escape. SUN, MOON AND TIDE FRIDAY, FEB. 8 Sun rises Sun sets Moon rises Moon sets New Moon 1st Qtr. Full Moon Last Qtr. Feb.
