20 50 OFF ALL PICTURES JEWELRY (Sale ends 9-22-91) TYRE, Lebanon (AP) Six Palestinian guerrillas seized then freed 14 U.N. peacekeepers Friday after a shootout with Israeli soldiers and allied militiamen. A Swedish sergeant who had arrived in Lebanon a day earlier was killed. The seaborne guerrillas, who apparently planned a raid on the Israeli coast, fled to the southern Lebanese shore and took the hostages after an Israeli gunboat intercepted their rubber boats. After the battle, the guerrillas identified themselves as members of Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Fatah denied it. A guerrilla also was killed and five U.N. soldiers were wounded in the gunbattle, said Timur Goksel, spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL). Another guerrilla was wounded and held by the Israeli army, while a third was captured by Israel's proxy militia, the South Lebanon Army. The remaining three "turned their weapons in to UNIFIL and surrendered without any resistance," Goksel said.

The U.N. peacekeepers later handed the three guerrillas to the Lebanese army. They were flown in a military helicopter to the army command In Yarze east of Beirut for interrogation, said a UNIFIL source, speaking on condition of anonymity. A Lebanese officer said the guerrillas "probably will be tried according to Lebanese law for trying to launch a raid from Lebanese soil." Six Swedish and eight French peacekeepers were seized. The dead peacekeeper was a Swedish blue beret and the wounded were two Frenchmen and three Swedes, Goksel said.

He refused to disclose their names pending notification of their families. The Swedes, including the dead sergeant, were newcomers. They arrived in Lebanon on Thursday as part of a routine rotation to serve with UNIFIL's logistics battalion, Goksel said. A reliable Palestinian source said the six guerrillas left in two rubber dinghies from the refugee camp of Rashidiyeh with instructions to "land in Israel and take hostages." 4901 Washington Ave. in Westgate Mall 635-0905 Mon.

Thurs. 10-9; Fri. 3-9 Sat. Sun. 1 1-5 North Korea may be near nuke arms SEOUL, South Korea (AP) A high ranking North Korean defector revealed Friday that the Communist North has a secret nuclear research center that he said could produce nuclear weapons hy 1193.

The comments by Ko Young Ilwan, the first North Korean diplomat known to have defected to the rival South, go far toward confirming international fears of North Korea's capability to produce nuclear arms. The isolated North, one of the world's last hard line Communist regimes, denies it is seeking to join the nuclear club. "North Korean leaders regard nuclear weapons as the last means they can resort to to protect their system, and I think they are one or two years away from having one," Ko told a news conference. The presence of the North Korean underground nuclear facility was previously unknown. There was no immediate comment from North Korea.

Ko, 38, defected alone in May because he was disenchanted with the North's Communist system, according to a South Korean statement. At first, he feared publicity would harm his family, but changed his mind, it said. He had served as an interpreter to Communist leader Kim II Sung, and was most recently a first secretary at the North Korean Embassy in the Congo in Africa. He left his job in March, and arrived in South Korea in May. Ko said that after accompanying Vice President Park Sung Chul, Foreign Minister Kim Yong Nam and others overseas he came to believe North Korea is close to building an atomic bomb.
