TI i Ci bi et I hi bi ni sc IN Of th fo 0 First European Winner Since 1933 Borg's Win Gives Sweden Davis Title STOCKHOLM (UPI) Teenage tennis star Bjorn Borg beat battle-hardened Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia in straight sets Sunday to clinch the 64th Davis Cup final for Sweden. The 19-year-old Swede took one hour and 50 minutes to destroy the 1973 Wimbledon champion, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, and secure an unbeatable 3-1 lead for his country in the best-of- five match series. In what he described as the important match of my Borg played the game of his life to make Sweden the first Davis Cup champions from Europe since Britain edged France in the last all-European final 42 years ago. The 29-year-old Czechoslovak, who was playing on the international circuit before Borg had picked up his first racket, was the man to crack in this war of nerves on the fast linoleum indoor court of Royal Tennis Hall. Borg, his long blond hair kept in place by a headband, softened Kodes up with his explosive two-fisted backhand and delivered the coup de grace with flashing forehands as the Czechoslovak wilted under a blistering attack and the nonstop chant of go, by the Swedish fans.

The odds were stacked in favor. He came onto the court with Sweden leading 2-1 after sharing two singles and winning doubles, plus a 5-3 win record against Kodes in previous matches. Kodes lost the opening serve in each set and had to fight an uphil battle throughout. It was a climb Kodes found too steep against the No. 3-ranked player in the world.

An eventful opening game saw Kodes start with a double fault and trail 0-30 before leveling. Then a booming backhand gave Borg the break point. Kodes served what he thought were two aces but which were both called by the net judge and he had to serve again. Borg unleashed another backhand straight at Kodes and took the game. The pattern was set with Kodes caught in between deciding to come up to the net and risk being passed by Borg or find himself at the receiving end of too powerful a stroke to return.

Kodes switched tactics, hitting deeper to peg Borg to the baseline. He managed to break back in the eighth game, but Borg broke back immediately, scoring with two forehand drives and then serving to take the set. The second set began with another losing effort by Kodes and ended with him angrily kicking over a chair after two close line caiis went against him. Borg never relinquished his relentless pressure, achieving another service break in the fifth game, saving a break point in the next and clinching the set two games later. There was no stopping Borg now as he streaked into a 4-1 lead with breaks in the first and fifth games.

The craggy Kodes, a rugged fighter, saved a match point in the seventh game and another three in the next before finally conceding defeat. 10C America Wins Jr. Tourney MIAMI BEACH (UPI) The fourth-seeded United States team of Walter Redondo and Neal Brash ousted third-ranked West Germany in a decisive doubles match after splitting twin singles contests Sunday to win the ISth annual Sunshine Cup tennis tournament.
