SC NAPLES DAILY NEWS Thurs, May 13, 1976 Men Keglers Take Aim At Tournament Targets By TOM RIFE Sports Editor The annual Naples City Tournament moves into its second and final weekend Saturday at Brookside Bowl. Some high scores were posted during the first two days of the tournament and bowlers this Sturday and Sunday have some targets at which to gun. It's going to take quite an effort to top Don Matheny's 739 singles mark. His 703 scratch series in the singles last weekend earned him a spot on all-time leader board. MATHENY ALSO leads the all-events handicap and scratch categories at 1,973 and 1,965 respectively.

The doubles is led by Doug Odom and Bruce Bradley and Bill Rans and Bill Browns. Those two tandems are tied at 1,266. Creigh Hall and Harold Munsey. had a 1,260. The Joel Metts Associates team rolled a 3,136 and consists of Ronald Metts, Jim Phillips, Tony Bray, Ed Newberry and Mike Calvore THE WIEDMEYER TV squad, in second at 3,077, is made up of Terry Ramberg, Fred Zawacky, Pete Farley, Al Wiedmeyer and Al Sharkey.

The Housemen team, third at 3,020 is made up of Denny Damschroder, Carl Nordwall, Junior Simpson, Nick Louris and Jim Ashbacher. never says tournament manager bacher 140 average bowler could come in here and win it all." We'll know Sunday evening, Jim. 0 THE FLORIDA State Bowling State Tournament continues this weekend in Fort Lauderdale at the Imperial Brunswick Bowl and Don Tamarac Lanes northwest of (he city. the biggest state event ever held in Florida A new state team record was set earlier in the tournament and is still standing in first place after three weeks. The Bugsy Bombers squad of Orlando fired a handicap total of 3,404.

The scratch total was 3,136 and that was more than any five-man team in the history of the tournament has ever 0 BOWLING shot 649 a man scratch per set. INCIDENTALLY, teams going over to bowl this weekend might be interested in knowing that as of last Sunday afternoon, the low team still in the money was at 2,981. After the 3,404, the second place team was the "No- gang from Broward County at 3,280 So a big drop-off between first and second. Trez Neeley, Jr. led the singles as of last Sunday afternoon at 741.

In the dubs, Steve Brasecker and James Barry had a 1,465. Broward Kegier Ronald Bass led the all-events at 2,060. A WORD or two in regards to the state tournament. Bowlers from this area yet to compete in the state event are in for a treat. The team event is being held at what is probably the premier house in Florida.

One of the most-heard comments from other bowlers in the team event at the new Tamarac Lanes was, sure wish I could take this house back UNDERSTANDABLE. The that Don Carter is something special. There are 56 AMF machines, divided into two segments of 28, with the bar, pool table and desk facilities separating the two. But the entire inside is without walls, save the lounges The lighting on the approaches is ideal. Thre simply are no shadows or reflections and the light has just a slight pink tinge to it.

Combine that type of lighting with a higher-than-normal ceiling and the first time you step up on the approach, apt to get a false sense of security. The higher ceiling gives the impression of the lanes being shorter, which is a mental lift. AND EVEN on the most solid of strikes there is little noise. The acoustics of the building make the pins sound like marshmallows when they fall. Because of the separation of the 28 lanes on each side of the building, you hardly notice the other 28 even being in use.

The color scheme is dramatic. Offsetting the red, gray and white pinspotters is plush blue, red and orange carpeting, which lines both walls at the sides of the lanes. Carter has rolled out the red carpeting over the entire floor area and bright orange seats and chairs. There is one wing filled with electronic games. What it boils down to is Don Carter has been in the business for many years and has bowled everywhere.

Apparently ke knew just what he wanted in his own house and put it all in a million-dollar blueprint. The result was superb. IF THERE is one drawback, in the snack bar, which seem big enough to Rangers Tie White Sox serve the numbers of people that would be bowling or present as spectators. smaller than the snack bar at Pine Lanes. But considering a lot of us would rather bowl than eat makes the sire of the snack bar less of a concern, right? Just two reports came in from local league action, as the winter season is over Friday night.

At Pine Lanes, Little Western took first place in the Trail Bowlers league, with Grading Service second and Fore Walls Tavern third. Dan Mayfield topped all bowlers with games of 211, 232 and 212 for a 655 set. Junior Bramfield had a 230-614 Al Clade rolled a 223 and Chuck Johnson had a 227. WITH ONE more week left, the Poets lead the Merry Mixers of Brookside by one point, with the screwballs third seven points back. Jordan 211 was the high game and Avis Knoebel had a 210 for the ladies.

With the end of the winter season upon us, management at both local houses report that there are still many openings in the various summer bowling leagues. Like the winter, there are leagues for all age and talent keglers. Anyone interested should contact Pine Lanes or Brookside Bowl now. The game in the 13-year-old prep Babe Ruth Baseball League between the Burger King Rangers and the White Sox had everything except a winner. After playing to a seven-inning 6-6 deadlock, the game was called because of time and will be replayed at the end of the season if it influences the final standings.

Through seven innings, Ranger pitching had a no-hitter going, but it was anything but a perfect game as they had also given up 16 walks and six runs. Two Sox batter were beaned. The Rangers opened with one run in the first and the White Sox answered with one in the second. The Sox then took the lead with two runs in the third, but the Rangers rolled with three in the bottom of the third. With a single run in the fourth, it was tied at 4-4 and both teams scored two more to send the game into a deadlock.

Dan Maloney started on the hill for the Rangers and Mark Rudnicki pitched in the third, with Bob Pacenta working in the fourth. Tom Weber went the route for the Sox, striking out eight. Ranger pitching fanned 12. All three hits in the game went to Rangers. Rudnicki got his first hit of the year and drove in two runs.

Maloney and John Allen also added hits. Hall of Fame NEW YORK (UPI) The Basketball Hall of Fame is located at Springfield CcUege, Springfield, where the sport was invented.
