Loeal Clearing; Snow Galm of ST Pea Cent Chleagro Exehaage Tradlalr Im Steel aad Tla Plate, Glucose closed at 75 yesterday, the top price, moving In sympathy with Sugar, which closed at 172K. or 7)4 points above the open lng. It can be almost authoritatively announced there Is nothing at this time in the market story of the Immediate consolidation of Glu cose with the American Sugar company. The matter was taken- up 'some months ago and dropped, largely because of the terms asked for the common stock by the president of the Glucose company. Mr.

Matthlessen be lleves there la a long period of fine earning power ahead of the company, and he will not sacrifice the net Income, which he feels per sonally able to earn for the shareholders of the' for a few hundred thousand dollars of underwriting profits. Those who have been observers of the business policy of the head of the Glucose will readily understand that he is too strongly Intrenched in his position to give up the Glucose company without being paid an ex tremely handsome purchase price for Its shares and probably be accorded the presl dency the consolidated- corporation. The people who do not understand this should buy Glucose for an investment and wait until th consolidation is effected, whaefi seems reasonably certain not now', but some time la the future. Those moat intimately connected with tbe affairs of the Glucose corporation under; stand there is nothing in the present situa tion, so far as consolidation goea. except the enthusiasm of the public as demonstrated in its buying of the shares.

However, as earn Ings and industrial propositions go, the stock by all ordinary calculations Is generally con ceded to be worth more than, it is selling at. But the value of the stock Is not under con It Is the probability ot im mediate consolidation that is being dls cussed. Hawk Statente-wt. NEW TORK. Special Dispatch to The Inter Ocean. NEW TORK. search Is. Satordav'a stock mar kets at thla season are, aa a rale, divided Into tw clearly marked sections.

The flrst la th period before the publication of th bank statement, and th second Is th Interval between that event aad th close of business. Th attention naturally paid to the money market situation causes th bsnk statement to awaited with particular interest, and until Ita ahowlng Is made publlo the trading la apt to be desultory aad uncertain. Such was the caa thl morning. Th general market opened lower, then developed a great deal of strength, and subsequently lapsed Into th Irregularity that has characterised th dealings throughout the week. Active speculative intereat was almost wholly engroaaed with Sugar Reusing and Brooklyn Rapid Transit.

In th main these stocks wer tirm though showing wide fluctuations. Ob th other -hand the Steel and Wire and Continental Tohaoso shares were nnder -pronounced pressure. Metropolitan-Street railway dropped sharply and Manhattan Railway wa unsettled. New Tork Central, tha granger shares. and the other atandard lasuea showed Irregular movements, though Union Pacino preferred was comparatively firm.

Nothing definite In the way of new attended th movements la any -of the stocks named. The nrnrntng's news contained aothlna of a financial bearlna. -Ths London mar ket was heavv on renorted aoorehenslons of higher rates for money, but the foreign dealings nere were nmicea to tna sat oc a tew uousuu shares of various stocks. While the bank statement's figures wer: far out of technical proof, the ahowlng on the whole was more favorable than had been anticipated. Acrnsi esah holdings decreased about as.uoo.OOO, 'Which falrlv reflected the known cash movements since last 'Friday.

The decrease In specie smounted to SC.140.0U0. representing the Central Pacific syndicate payment to the government last week. The loan account ahiwed a decrease of tl.tKS.MO. and deposita fell S7.803.0uO. Aa a result or these changea surplus reserves decreased S4.12S.O0O.

and they now stand at S1S.O74.0oe. The percentage of reservee ta riennait is now S7.6. ssrsfnst r7.S last week. The-stock market rallied sharply and general! upon tne puDiication oi ine aiaiemeui. ia mv recovery following the publication of the bank statement Sugar Refining and Brooklyn Rapid Transit struck the highest prices on recora, ana Metropolitan Street Railway rallied sharply, though It did not retain the full measure or Its advanos.

Tha lTnlon Pacific, shares were the foremost fea tures of th railway list, and the Reading Issues recovered a part of aa early decline. The tone at the close was steady, though the heavy dealings in Sugar Refining and Brooklyn Transit over shadowed those elsewhere In the market. rrt Knnda dosed II follows: Bid. Asked-- tT. 8.
