Not even the largest crowd ever to watch a University of South Florida women's basketball game could rattle the Bulls. Playing in front of 16,113 rabid Kansas fans Saturday afternoon, USF outscrapped, outworked and outplayed the Jayhawks to win the 2009 Women's National Invitational Tournament title, 75-71. "We've played a lot of places in the nine years that I've been at South Florida," USF coach Jose Fernandez said. "But this atmosphere was absolutely tremendous." For the players on the floor, the packed house posed a handful of challenges. In addition to forcing the Bulls to keep their nerves in check, it also tested their ability to communicate.

"At first, it was kind of loud and disturbing," said WNIT MVP Shantia Grace, who scored 16 points and dished five assists in the victory. "It was loud, my ears were ringing and I couldn't even hear myself breathe." The raucous arena was quieted in a hurry as the Bulls (27-10) jumped out to a 16-6 lead and maintained an eight-point advantage (38-30) at the half. "We just had to stay together," freshman guard Jasmine Wynne said. "Coach told us, 'The crowd can't In the second half, the Bulls built a lead of 13 points, thanks State 77-49; def. With their chance at the tide slipping away, the Jayhawks (22-14) found enough energy for one final run. A furious 13-2 KU rally cut the USF lead to 67-66 with 2:20 to play. But the Bulls remained calm in the face of the roaring KU crowd and outscored the Jayhawks 8-2 in the next two minutes until KU's Danielle McCray (24 points) buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer. "I guess the biggest surprise was our secondary," Coach Bobby Bowden said. "They have been getting ripped pretty good this spring. The defense won the battle. "All of them deserve a pat on the back. Their pass rush was better; their run defense was better; their secondary was the most active I've seen them all spring." Despite some of the defense's struggles early in spring practice, Robinson maintains the unit didn't lack confidence entering Saturday's game that attracted approximately 30,000 spectators.

FSU's young defense finally struck back in the Garnet Gold game Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium. Six starters are gone from a unit that ranked 15th nationally in total defense last season, but several newcomers who are likely to play significant roles in 2009 helped the defense defeat the offense 39-27. Thomas finished with 31 yards on five carries, while Jones rushed 11 times for 30 yards and fumbled four times. FSU will conclude spring drills with three more sessions this week.
