12 SPORTS SOV1AY. APRIL 6. 2008 THE TAMP TRIBUNE TBC AUTOS ARENA FOOTBALL Storm Come lb Short' Vs. Columbus McDowell Is Trying To Learn unsuccessful attempt to plead his case. Tampa Bay coach Tim Mar-cum did the same thing after the Storm were called for an illegal defense on a fourth-and-14 incompletion by Nagy.

Nagy completed 22 of 32 passes for 223 yards and six touchdowns, four to Derek Lee. Leroy Thompson got pressure up the middle, and Dieu's pass to former Destroyers player David Saunders was incomplete. Seth Marler's 22-yard field-goal attempt hit the left upright, keeping it a 21-21 game at halftime. Despite getting a short field after recovering an onside kick, the Destroyers couldn't capitalize. A stuffed run, sack and incompletion forced them to settle for a 21-yard field goal.

Each team then scored after a penalty on fourth down gave it new life. Coggins broke up a slant pass to Lawrence Samuels, only to be called for pass interference. Destroyers coach Doug Kay was so incensed that he walked onto the field in an harich as their offensive coordinator this week in hopes of an inconsistent attack. "It's difficult to be able to put in an offense in a few days," quarterback Matt Nagy said. "What we did was put in what he wanted in our own terminology." For the first time this season, the Destroyers scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession, and did so on their other two first-half possessions.

Destroyers defenders were able to put some pressure on Dietz, but it wasn't until the final possession of the first half that they were able to stop the Storm (2-3). Neal caught the deflection for the game's only turnover.

Coggins then made the game-clinching play. After the Destroyers scored following the interception, Tampa Bay answered with its own TD with 20 seconds left to pull to 44-42. A successful onside kick would have given the Storm a chance to pull out a victory, but Coggins not only recovered the kick, but also he returned it for a touchdown. "What can I say?" he said. "I'm hot." Centeno triumphed with Soldier's Dancer in the Cherokee River Stable Turf Classic, Bayou's Lassie in the Farm Turf Distaff, and Repenting in the Ocala Breeders' Sales Sophomore before an announced crowd of 7,406. He also broke his own single-season earnings record, adding nearly $250,000 on the day to $1,815,497, and his 121 wins this meet are four behind his TBD record last year. Tews Michael McDowell came to Texas Motor Speedway as a NASCAR rookie known best for infuriating Jeff Burton during his Sprint Cup debut. Then the kid barrel-rolled his car around the track in the most spectacular crash in recent history. Now he's an overnight sensation, booked solid on national TV shows to dis cuss the wreck he lived to talk about.

It's created mixed feelings for McDowell, who didn't quite want to become fa McDowell mous this way. "We don't want to go out there and wreck cars to get on TV, that's never the plan," McDowell said Saturday as he prepared for today's Samsung 500. "If you're going to do one as spectacular as we did we'll definitely soak up as much as we can get." The wreck during Friday's qualifying session capped an auspicious first week for McDowell. He debuted last Sunday at Martinsville with a decent run. But when his desire not to lose another lap interfered with Burton's attempt to pass, the 23-year-old angered the veteran.

Burton offered a blistering critique of McDowell, and the criticism spoiled the weekend for McDowell, who finished 26th. Friday's crash inflamed die debate over McDowell's readiness, but his team insists it is unwarranted. "He's been phenomenal in the fact that he hasn't bent one piece of sheet metal until yesterday," MWR general manager Ty Norris said. "He's proven to us that he deserves a chance." NATIONWIDE: Kyle Busch won at Texas Motor Speedway in dominating fashion, leading 126 of the 200 laps and finishing more than a second ahead of Jeff Burton. With an average speed of 151.708 mph, it was fastest Nationwide race at the l'i-mile high-banked track.

The caution flag came out with 10 laps left after Kyle Krisiloff crashed on the backstretch. Instead of pitting for new tires, Busch kept his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on the track. On the restart with seven laps to go, Busch stayed out front and stretched his gap ahead of Burton's Chevrolet.
