in the cam paign to head a six man field Bowles also stopped short of nomination as he polled 45 per cent of the vote against 37 per cent for his major opponent Lt Gov Pat Taylor Holshouser and Taylor were reported considering runoffs In a statement Sunday Hol shouser said he was awaiting the official canvass of votes but in the event he ran second was serving notice he would seek a second primary 6907 and Zeb Dickson i 4635 Arlis Pettyjohn of Elkin won nomination in the American party primary drawing 58 per cent of the vote in a race with Bruce Burleson of Charlotte Less than 1000 votes were cast County boards of election will canvass their votes Tuesday A formal report must be made to the state Board of Election oh May 16 Gardner the 1968 GOP nomi nee had predicted he would win nomination by 65 to 70 per cent In making the prediction he was counting on strong sup port from the populous Pied mont and western the backbone of the Republican party in North Carolina Most of those Paul Kennedy Jr was second with 6974 Joe Thompson was in third place with 6531 Joe Williams in fourth place with 6408 and John Gregory was in fifth place with 5856 The two women in the race Mrs Millie Lynn with 5540 and Mrs Jeannie Krider with 5158 were eliminated as was David Seal who polled 2028 In the non partisan race for four seats on the county board of education Kenneth Wooten was high with 8072 followed by Rev Paul Conrad with 7162 Samuel Ostwalt with 6903 and (Sam) Brown with 337694 or 4431 percent Dr Eu 5864 Brown was one of two in cumbents seeking re election Hanoi Area Is Bombed SAIGON (AP) US war planes returned to the Hanoi area today for the first time in three weeks and bombed stor age depots barracks and train ing facilities supporting the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam the US Com mand announced The command said waves of carrier based Navy planes hit targets about 15 miles west of Hanoi and that all the jets re turned safely The command made no men tion of any enemy MIGs being shot down but other sources paign for the June 3 New Jer had reported earlier that sev eral were sighted and de stroyed The command also said only tactical fighter bombers took part in the raids and that there were no B52 strategic bombers used It did not say how many planes were involved but it was learned that at least two carriers are in the Tonkin Gulf with about 150 planes available In Race RALEIGH (AP) Second District Rep ountain has weathered the toughest challenge of his 19 year career in Congress and defeated a black opponent for the second time ountain dean the state the 4th and the 7th Democratic races no single candidate re ceived a majority of the vote and runoffs were possible State Sen Jyles Coggins of Raleigh and state Rep Ike An drews of Siler City were the front runners in a six man field for the 4th District Democratic nomination The seat is being vacated by Rep Nick Galifian akis Andrews told newsmen Satur day night that if he came in second he would call a runoff With all returns in from the 172 precincts Coggins received 25614 votes for 3136 per cent of the total and Andrews followed with 24784 or 3034 per cent William Creech of Raleigh was third with 13196 Wense Grabarek of Durham had 10 772 Archie McMillan of Raleigh 4242 and Charles Bullock of Knightdale 3062 In the 7th District Democratic primary Charles Rose III picked up almost 49 per cent of the vote to lead the field of three ayetteville lawyers running for the seat being vacated by incumbent Rep Alton Lennon who is retiring With 167 or 168 precincts in Rose got 33670 votes and state Sen Hector McGeachy followed with 17720 votes or 2574 per cent Doran Berry was third with 17437 McGeachy said Sunday that he has received calls from across the district asking him to call a runoff based on the unofficial returns But he said will wait until after the offi cial canvass of the vote on Tuesday before making any further In the Republican congres sional race in the 7th District Jerry Scott of Whiteville held a slight lead over William Nixon of Barnesville With 143 of 168 precincts in Scott had 2477 to 2460 for Nixon In the 9th District Democrat ic Rep James Beatty Meck lenburg will face Republican James Martin of Davidson in the November general election for the seat being vacated by incumbent Rep Charles Jonas With complete returns from the 133 precincts Beatty had 46041 to 8729 for Jack irpo of Charlotte Martin received 15 273 to 3727 for Graem Yates of Charlotte Incumbent Rep David Hen derson of Wallace easily won renomination to his 3rd District seat over Joseph Edwards of Mt Olive With 185 of 186 pre cincts reporting Henderson had 44831 to 11686 for Edwards 5 Margins Are Slim May Ask Runoff RALEIGH NC (AP) Rep Nick Galifianakis who stumped the state in a face to face cam paign has forced Sen Ever ett Jordan the 14 year congres sional veteran into a June 3 runoff election for North Caro Democratic senatorial nomination Jesse Helms a Raleigh tele vision executive and editorial ist won the Republican nomi nation by sweeping aside two opponents with ease Galifianakis winning big in the metropolitan areas of indus trial rich Piedmont but losing in the tobacco farm lands of the east and the sparcely popu lated mountains of the west pulled one of the major upsets in recent North Carolina politi cal history by besting Jordan by some 35000 votes But Galifianakis the 43 year old son of Greek immigrant parents fell 15000 votes short of a majority as two minor op ponents siphoned off some 48 000 votes In the Democratic race with 2242 of 2255 precincts report ing the vote was Galifianakis 375795 or 4731 percent Jordan Wallace Bowles Win In Iredell By JERRY JOSEY Unofficial returns from 23 precincts Saturday night gave a 2 1 edge to Alabama Gov George Wallace over Terry Sanford Duke Uni versity president and former governor of the state in North first presi dential preference primary in the Democratic race President Richard Nixon won easily in the GOP race Iredell voters endorsed Har grove (Skipper) Bowles for governor in a close contest with Lt Gov Pat Taylor Bowles polled 5375 votes while Taylor garnered 4249 for the Demo cratic nomination On the GOP ledger Iredell gave James (Jim) Gardner the edge 1676 over James Holshouser Jr who had 1007 in the Republican gubernatorial race Commission Race Top interest locally was evi denced in the Democratic pri mary to select five candidates for the Iredell County board of commissioners and four mem bers of the county school board a nonpartisan campaign In the Democratic com missioners primary Dr Robert Long incumbent chairman led the field with 7501 votes New comer Paul Kennedy Jr was second with 6974 and in cumbent Joe Thompson of Mooresville vice chairman polled 6531 Rounding out the top five were Joe Williams with 6408 and John Gregory with 5856 Completing the commission field were Mrs Millie Lynn with 5540 Mrs Jeannie Krider 5158 and David
