By the time the fall semester starts in August, USF plans to fill administrative positions that oversee the school's academic programs and will direct plans for a $75 million health care and education complex and the largest fundraising campaign in the medical school's history. Genshaft will hire a permanent provost, the school's second-highest administrative 'position, along with a permanent dean of the College of Public Health and vice president for Health Sciencesdean 'of the College of Medicirte.

Possible 4th Opening If Athletic Director Lee Roy Selmon decides to step down from his post at the end of a six-week medical leave, Genshaft also will have to find someone to lead the Bulls' 2005 entrance into the Big East football conference. Selmon told The Tampa bune last month that a stress-related condition made it "highly unlikely" he would remain in the athletic department's top spot. Genshaft said she is looking for strong leaders who will add to a strong administrative team. "I want talent," Genshaft 'said. "I want strong, motivated leaders who have a good Sense of the academy and the discipline they're going to lead.

I don't care if they're internal or external." For Genshaft, the ongoing searches may have a feeling of deja vu. This is the second time she has filled vacancies for medical school dean and dean of the College of Public Health since arriving at USF. Of the three searches, the hunt for a provost, who oversees academic policy at this school of more than 41,000 students and acts as the primary liaison between faculty and the administration, is furthest along. A search committee began meeting in August, narrowing the field to four candidates, who each spent two days on campus last month. The contenders include interim USF Provost Renu Khator, a veteran USF faculty member and administrator considered by some campus insiders to have the inside track on the job.

She is the only candidate with ties to USF and has a close working relationship with Genshaft, who appointed her dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2002. Genshaft elevated her to interim provost in July when Provost David Stamps stepped down to return to teaching because of health problems. The search committee is sifting through candidate evaluations, preparing a report it will forward to Genshaft on Monday, said Honors College Dean Stuart Silverman, who chairs the committee. USF faculty are keenly interested in the provost hire, faculty union President Roy Weath-erford said. "Even the' president doesn't have as much importance in the daily lives of faculty," he said.

Genshaft is expected to make her selection within the next few weeks.

The search committee for dean of the College of Public Health will start reviewing applications Feb. 15. The vice president for Health Sciencesdean of the College of Medicine search committee held its first meeting Thursday. Genshaft is expected to fill those positions by the summer. Health And Medical Spots The committee charged with finding a permanent medical school dean held its first meeting Thursday.

"We'll try to find the best candidates in the nation," said Ian Phillips, committee chairman and USF's vice president for research. In October, Genshaft moved up the timetable for Robert Daugherty planned retirement as medical school dean and vice president for health sciences. Genshaft and Daugherty denied the move was related to Daugherty's acknowledgment that he had asked faculty and staff members to contribute to state Rep. Johnnie Byrd's U.S. Senate campaign during calls from his medical school office and in person on school property.

Byrd, R-Plant City, said he was unaware Daugherty had solicited money for his campaign. Two weeks later, Genshaft appointed Robert Belsole, a hand surgeon and longtime member of the College of Medicine faculty, to serve as interim medical school dean and vice president for health sciences. In that capacity, he oversees USF's medical school, nursing school and College of Public Health. Belsole has not decided whether he will be a candidate for the job. The search for a dean of the College of Public Health is also proceeding.

A committee chaired by College of Nursing Dean Patricia Burns will start reviewing applications Feb. 15. The goal is to have a permanent dean in place by summer. Stanley Graven, a pediatrician and director of USF's Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies, has been interim dean since January 2003 when the previous dean, Lawrence Branch, stepped down. Graven has said he is not a candidate for the permanent position.

W'-'i mmm COMEDIC SHOWCASE Continued From Page 1 Saturday night. Tampa was the last stop on an eight-city talent hunt, and one wanna-be comic had been to auditions in every city.

Buck Star got his first callback Saturday night. Another hopeful, a Chicago restaurant worker whose stage name is "Gusimo," had stood for hours at the Windy City auditions in freezing temperatures, but was 225th in line and didn't get in. He flew to Tampa only to get the boot because his routine was too weak. Also in line were Florida State University students Kevin Boyle and E.L. Smith, who didn't make the cut, but were grateful for the critiques.

And toting a 7-foot inflatable cow was dairy farmer Tim Moffitt of Bradenton, known as "the dairy comic" because he entertains at Florida dairy industry events. He made it into the finals. Moffitt got a big laugh with the joke: "Karaoke is 'hooked on phonics' for rednecks." Among the locals in the group were bookseller Scott Newcombe, 24, who spent hours writing his first stand-up; Dottie Casper, a 77-year-old grandmother who has been doing open mic nights at Sidesplitters better than Prozac," she says) and professionals such as Maurice Jovan, who has opened at Sidesplitters and is co-host of a weekly movie series cnWMOR-TV. "I see a lot of psychosis and sad, desperate people in this line," Jovan joked. Newcombe and Casper got cut early.

But 69-year-old Grandma Lee Strong of Jacksonville advanced in the audition. Jovan didn't make the cut, LAKESIDE STATION Continued From Page 1 ny agrees with the city that the development shouldn't take place until the property is declared safe for building. Last year, he compared the delay to hitting the pause button on a VCR. "We're ready to push play whenever it's prudent to do that," he said. Forty-one families are being supplied by the state with bottled water because their wells are polluted with contaminants such as arsenic and boron. In announcing the closing Friday, Coronet Chief Executive Officer David Denner cited declining demand for the factory's principal product, an animal feed supplement. Denner said environmental concerns played no role in the closing, which will result in the layoff of about 90 employees. The company will work with the state Department of Environmental Protection on closing the plant and protecting the environment, he said.

The plant's wastewater holding ponds contain pollutants such as arsenic, fluoride and boron, which are byproducts of the phosphate process. Walden Lake sold its last lot in August. And the need for another large development to take its place has taken on a new urgency, city officials said.
