Friday, April 2004 4:00 6:00 p.m. Packet Pick-up at DoubleTree Guest Suites Saturday April 10, 2004 6:45 a.m.Race Day Registration MARCUM CONSIDERS PERSONNEL CHANGES Cobras 54, Storm 43 By KEITH CANNON Special to the Tribune CHARLOTTE, N.C On paper, Sunday's Arena Football League game against the Carolina Cobras should've been a cure for what ailed the defending champion Storm. The Cobras, on a four-game losing streak that cost Coach Ed Khayat his job earlier in the week, matched the Storm with a 2-4 record. They hadn't won a home game in 16 tries, dating to 2002, when the team was located in Raleigh, N.C. But a 54-43 loss at Charlotte Coliseum left the Storm pondering a harsh reality after their third straight defeat.

"Two and five. It's hard to even say 2-5 around here," said Storm quarterback Pat O'Hara, who passed for 249 yards and six touchdowns. "We need a win any way we can get it a break going our way, or just fighting and scrapping back." Sunday, the Storm saw a 29-21 halftime lead disappear in a third-quarter meltdown. Carolina, playing its first game under new coach and former offensive coordinator John Gregory, scored 24 unanswered points to take control. That surge started and ended with the Cobras taking advantage of Tampa Bay mistakes.

Defensive tackle Otis Moore picked off an O'Hara pass on the Storm's first series, and the Cobras scored on a 25-yard pass from Matt Nagy to Jarrick Hillery on the next play. By the time the Cobras scored on Jack Walker's recovery of a free ball in the net on the quarter's last play, the score was 45-29. "We were driving on that first possession and throw the then we miss a wide-open receiver when we get the ball back, and then we give them one in the net," Storm coach Tim Marcum said. "That was the ballgame. We had our chances and didn't take advantage." The Cobras' Hillary returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns (58 and 57 yards).

The last one came after a 22-yard touchdown pass from O'Hara to Clif Dell trimmed Carolina's lead to 45-35 with 13 minutes to play. Dell caught three touchdown passes. O'Hara threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Samuels with eight minutes to play and a 2-point conversion pass from O'Hara to Samuels made the score 51-43, but the Storm couldn't get closer. "We didn't play two to Cure Diabetes MEDIA THE The Associated Press 'SEATTLE Ray Allen scored 22 points and Vitaly Potapenko added a season-high 21, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to an win against the lowly Orlando Magic on Sunday nignt. Rashard Lewis had 18 points and Vladimir Radmanovic added 12 as the Sonics won their season-high fifth straight, though it's coming too late to help make a push for the playoffs, J3rent Barry went scoreless but had a season-high 12 assists, and Reggie Evans matched a season-high with 10 rebounds despite sitting out the fourth quarter.

Juwan Howard led the Magic, with 20 points and nine while reserve Drew Gooden scored 17, but Orlando went without a field goal for seven minutes in the second half. Jt was the 17th straight road loss for the Magic against the Western Conference. The Sonics returned home after a 4-1 road trip. Seattle's last loss came March 12 at Miami, a low point where the Sonics had only eight first-quarter points and 25 at half-time. r0rlando lost its fifth straight and played again without Tracy McGrady.

He's attending his great-grandmother's funeral, and the Magic aren't likely to improve the NBA's worst record at 19-53 without him. ORIANDO (67) Howard 7-18 6-7 20, Johnsen 1-4 0-2 2.
