Photo by Francis E. Price BY DICK JEMISON. To propel an Inflated ball forward by. a motion of the foot. To the uninitiated andto scholars this defines the word football.

In its Inception the sport football was primarily Intended to be governed by the above definition. It has branched out since In a larger and broader scope other variety of play being incorporated but it still retains its original name football. Briefly the entire plan of attack of the 1913 Georgia Tech football. team is to kick. Any one not well versed in the game would at a casual glance come to the conclusion that as the primary the first rudiments of the game was to kick that the local eleven was retrograding.

But let us specialize. By so doing we will In this story which purports to be an inside treatise on the Tech team. keep pace with what the Jack. ets will do all season specialize. Good Punter an A t.

A good punter is a valuable asset on any football team. A good goal kicker Is more so. A player who can register field goals consistently Is a source of strength no coach can afford to overlook of worry to all opponents. Jim Thorpe's prowess as a goal kicker. made the Carlisle' Indians at least 60 per cent stronger last season.

Brlcklty' mighty toe was an immense help to Harvard. Puropellya accuracy tin booting saved Yale in her game wlthPr1nceton. ton. and other Innumerable instances might be mentioned The system of attack of the Tech Ilow Jackets In the coming season baa been completely changed by the possession of not only reliable. but accurate kickers in her back field.

The1 plunging rushing forward passing and trick-formation game will not be tabooed by reason of vthlsi added pining feature. Is jrar from U. ffci. Truetherehave been many rood puntersM3ut-Helsinan ha plan. ned kicking attack or relied on to th absence of ajJependable field goal There-Is i5marked difference be tweenageodpunter andgood5goaI the latt i there are i two classes. One Is the drop kicker and the other the placement kicker.

When a team Is possessed of a good punter a good place kicker and a good drop kicker even the uninitiated can see at a glance that the team possessing same has acquired an added strength not to be disparaged. but rather catered to. Teeb Will Kirk. Which brings us back to where we started The Tech football team of 1913 will KICK. Since Browns days.

as related above. Tech. has never had a man on whom she could rely to boot the ball between the goal posts and run up the score. In a. tight game.

a field goal might turn the tide of battle. Take. for example. the Tech football team of 1912. For Us weight the average was but 159 pounds It was as good a football team as there was In the south.

But this lack of weight prevented It from smashing the ball across to a touchdown that a heavier team mleht have been more successful at. and proved so against them. Here's where the field goal kicker would have come in. Which leds us to the main point at Issue. The Tech football team of 1913 pos- jses what the Tech football team of 1912 and for four years previous kick ed a good reliable goal kicker.

It possesses more. It has two such men. One can place-kick with accuracy anywhere from the center of the field to the goal posts. The other can drop kick with the same effectiveness. See the point' Suppose for instance.

Tech Is play- ingOeorgia. On the first down. 5 yards are sained. On tb next two the Jackets are held. The ball is on the 40- ard line.

Instead of risking either an end run. with the chances of losing more ground. or of tinting and thus five the opposition the ball. the try for a field goal lsattempted. If successful look what Is gained Sisay Possibilities.

The possibilities right hero are won- derfuL. From the kick formation which Ii after all a trick formation line up the opposition is at loss to fathom whether the Tech team will try for a real from field fake it and make an end run. forward pass. or many of the different trick combinations. Te teams In the put.

have never tried tp register a ficid goal. The opposition could and did eliminate that feature from the defense they planned and gave their entire attention to th punt the end run or the forward pass. Also with a place kicker and a drop kicker In the back. field the opposition la-further la the air. The back field could set Itself for the place kick and then the ball could De snapped to the drop kicker and the opposition thrown off the play altogether.

i Underline' new have been modified to' allow kicking. from anyplace behind the 11 ho of scrimmage the clause which last sea rt- sort made It absolutely Imperative on the threat of penalty that the punter or. goal kicker be 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage more possibilities arise. They are really endless. A tricky team possessed of two good kickers.

fleet runners good line smashers and a capable forward passer can pull all kind of plays from the same formation without tipping their hand to the opposition. Here is where the Tech team of un will star. The Kicking Stars. In Jim Preas the Riverside Military Academy all around athelete. who Is playing full back on the Jackets this season they possess a man who has in practice shown an aptitude and accuracy for placement kicks.

Last week at Giant field he reg lstered placement goals with ease 50 to 66 yards' away. The knowledge that he can do so and la likely to do at any time is going to ge a thorn in the side of very team. the Jackets play. Me is a good punter In the bargain getting off long high spirals the kind that gives his ends plenty of time to get down the field and nail the runner. In Relfsnlder a younger brother of the former navy star the Jackets have a drop kicker who Is said to be as effective In registering drop kicks as lrea is with the placement kicks.

True he dees not get quite as much distance but he is absolutely accurate which lends to the complications that will arise for the opposition to cope with when the Jackets are at any particular point In the enemy's territory. rtetfsnidtr Is also said to be a re liable punter. More trouble for the other fellows. Alf McDonald who did the punting last season will probably handle this feature of the Jackets' place again this year. But with Press and Reltsnlder also able to punt and the rule permitting the punting at any place behind the line of scrimmage without any set yardage condition the opposition will never know which man la going to punt and all three ere effective punting on the run.

Preas. Patten and Captain Cook can all throw forward passes an equal distance and with equal accuracy. Score another point for the Jackets and tht discomfiture of fl opponents. Attack Around Kicking. Yes the attack of th Tech football team of 113 Is going- to be shaped around the wonderful kicking ability in the backfleld but while.

the kicking is going to play a prominent part it is not going to be that the. Jackets possess. First and foremost the team has In creased weight and speed over the 1911 eleven. The average weight of the team will be between 171 and 175 pounds to tire man. against 16 last year A Light teams are usually.

fast. TOe Jackets of 2912 were. fast as one wouldlook orthem torb wIth their light weight. The heavier team this year Is considerably faster. though a bit newer to the game.

Again you can see the possibilities. Here's a team weighing twelve or thirteen pounds to the man heavier than the one of last year. with more speed and the kicking power than the former years team lacked. Truly Tech supporters are right In being jubilant over their prospects. The Tech baokfleld for the season has been decided upon.

Captain Cook wilt play left half. where he starred last season. On him little comment la necessary. He has the O. K.

stamp from the coach the student body and the fans. At quarter back Jane Pattern the Baylor star who la expected to prove a. sensation in Intercollegiate circles this year. will be seen and from all ac. counts he' promises to be the star of the team.

On Pattens shoulders will fall the honor of running back the oppositions punts and at this particular branch of the game he is said to be the most sensational prep school lad that has ever entered Intercollegiate circles. Tatten will weigh between 170 and 175 pounds when In condition and Is as fast as a deer with a knowledge of the game that Is born. not made. He needs very little finishing to be a college star. Joknson Costing Star.

The guard candidates ar very scarce. There. are plenty. of them. but the good ones are in the minority.

It is understood that Coach Heisman has a couple of. finds up his sleeve that he Is going' to' announce in a few days but at present only two men of varsity guard caliber are on hand. One Ed Means the. only veteran lineman returned from last seasons team. here's- a steady reliable play.
