His average speed was 89.24 miles an hour. He hung on in second place for 150 miles behind Marshall Teague of Daytona Beach. Fla. Then he took the lead only to lose it back to Teague after 200 laps. It wasn't Teague's day, however, as his transmission burned out on 276th lap and he was forced to the sidelines.

He was far enough! ahead, however, to take eighth place.
