The bouse by a vote of 132 to 87 hu passed the bill to loan the exposition 1000000 soon as evidence is furnish eel that 500000 has been contributed by other parties. The senate is known to be friendly to the bill and so is the president and it will doubtless be a law during the present week.

The chief difficulty all along has been to get the bill before house but this was accomplished on Friday after a struggle of two hours with a special order. The loan of 1000000 by the United States ndt only insures the completion of fine buildings and the adoption of a broad ached' we but it invests the exposition with international glories. The lair will now be given in the name of the United States and our ministers and consuls will become its agents and advocates. Twtnly nations have already expressed an intention of being represented and the chances are altogether favorable for a show equal in most respects and in some res peels superior to the Philadelphia exhibition. The president has already decided to sjeild to it magnificent government exhibit and scarcely any city in the land wilUge unrepresented.

The scope and magnitude of the coming exposition should spur Atlanta to do her best. Millions of people will visit it and we cannot afford to let them go away with no recollections of Atlanta's industries in their minds. The mineral resources of Georgia the extent of her water powers the achievements of her cities and tl variety of her agricultural products should be held up before them until the claims of the empire state of the south are known and recognized. an fc COTTON MILLS IN THE SOUTH. The faith of investors in cotton mills established where the plant is grown shows no abatement.

but ft made up-of enterprises for which ground has been broken or mills that have increased their spindles and looms. The activity that exists in the building ot cotton mills in the south at such a time as the present is an indication of the boom that awaits us when trade becomes brisk. While the south is building new mills the north is steadily shutting down old mills. This pro- cess seems destined to go on until the south controls all kinds ot cotton goods fully IS much as she now does the coarser grades. Where goods are made to advantage there soon or late will fine goods be manufactured and when we are able to both produce and manufacture cotton we need not look for any other or better basis of prosperity and wealth.

SKETCHES OF EARLY ATHENS. Sketches from lbs early history of Athens Georgia. 1825 by Dr. Henry Hull edited by A. L.

Roll Is the title of a handsome pamphlet recently tesued The seventy-eight years of Dr. Hulls residence In Athens his prominence as one of her historical characters and his intimate an. qualntanoe with the people pre-eminently quill. fled him for the task of writing the annals of this pictumqueGeorgia city. The Scsi part of tie pamphlet mainly devoted to the early days of the State.

University and very interesting reading it ii. Describing a college commencement in 1806 the writer say The hearty ray cheeked country girls In their homespun and calico dresses looked without a shade of envy on the pale and languid faces of the ladles from the miasmatic districts dressed in their fash lonbly made tilca and saUna and regarded them rather with commiseration. as a people who could not milk a cow or cook I dinner to save them from starvation. As to the men with kid gloves and silk tocklngs. they created the same emotions as a show of wax figures they were brightly fancy but no use.

The early trade agriculture industries newspapers schools pupils etc of Athens are graphically described in the ketches but the pages de voted to reminiscences of the people will perhaps De considered of the ereaest Interest In this per lion of the work many characteristic incidents are narrated of the brave men and noble women who have left their footprints on the sands of time. It Is pleasant to turn over these pages and peruse toil appreciative record of the nunners customs and adventures of tie founders of many of the best families of this and other commonwealths. For it requires but a glance at the names and the genealogies sketched In these historic leaflets to im. press the reader with the idea that the descendant of the leading men lid women of the first quarter of a century of Athenian history have nlbly and spiritedly sustained the prestige and promise of their ancestral line. It is very evident now that we will have a railroad to this place at no distant day either the road from Smlthvllle or the road from Americas. Parties representing both enterprises went to Savannah to be present at the directors meeting of the Central railroad company to lay their respective claims before that body. In order to induce them to assist them in the build- lug ot their roads and whichever road the Central will give Us aid to is the one that wilt be built. And while most of on people would rather have connection at Americas yet It will make no mi. terlil difference which one we get IL railroad to any point is our paramount object.

New Tork New Orleans. From the New Orleans Times-Democrat. According. to the northern papers which the Racket reporter his seen it appears that New York has Invaded the south with such rates that It Is tin. possible for the merchants of this city to cope with the merchants of the great metropolis.

New York now steals Into the Atlanta territory and captures freight which properly belorgi to the merchants of New Orleans anti which they cannot reach owing to the high rate by rail out of this port. It is safe to say without criticising that the state of affairs anything but complimentary to the roads centering In this dty and itue to be hoped that some line will have backbone enough to change the situation. From what the Racket Re. porter has seen within the past two or three years it is evident that tnvroads leading into this city wllllhave to hunt around a great while before they cm find a sufficient mount of backbone to frown down New York competition. The HUaUsippi Valley.

From the New Orleans Times-Democrat News was received at the office of the Minis- lippi Valley road yesterday to the effect that Messrs. BallenUne Rogers contractors. on Wed. nesday laid 5600 feet of track out of the trams with only forty three men and also stopped to crib up" several openings. This work was per.

formed sjuth of Fyette Junction Miss. and the chances are that other contractors along the line will endeavor to beat the record. The officials of the road are making every effort to establish the system of central sugar mills for the reason that the business of the entire sugar- growing district will be increased at least 75 per cent. If the central sugar mils are established It Is safe to say that paper mills will also be erected to use the hsguae as paper stock. owing to the fact that a company has been organized in this city for that purpose.

The Racket reporter yesterday saw several spec men. of the bagtste paper which were very good and there Is every reason to believe that if enter prJslDg men weuld establish mills that the bed ness would pay well and also be the means 0 developing the resources of this state. Perry to Kawklnsvllle. From the HawtinlvUle Dispatch. A meeting was held at the courthouse in Ha klnsville on Thursday last to discuss the benefits that would accrue to IIawklnsv1I1e from sn extension of the Central road from Perry to this place.

Captain Anderson was made chairman of the meeting which was addressed by Colonel hi Hodge outlining a plan for the Inauguration of the work. His remarks were seutible and Impressed the meeting favorably. During the discussion of the matter it was developed that a committee had been In consultation with the president of the Central rod and he had slated thaw the people of Hawktnavllle or those interested and desiring the extension would grads the road and put drosaties it from Perry to liawkiusville the Central road would furnish the troll and rolling took and operate It and the net profits would be divided equitably. It Is said that the grading can done for 2 COO per mile arid the croutles furnished for about 1500 per mile. It was further stated that twenty runes would probably cover the distance between Perry and liswktnavlll.
